Bolivia denies Snowden on president's plane

Jul 3 2013, 1:50am CDT | by

La Paz, July 3 (IANS) Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca Tuesday denied that US whistleblower Edward Snowden was on the plane flying Bolivia's president out of Europe, after the aircraft was diverted on suspicion it was carrying the two men.

La Paz, July 3 — Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca Tuesday denied that US whistleblower Edward Snowden was on the plane flying Bolivia's president out of Europe, after the aircraft was diverted on suspicion it was carrying the two men.

In a televised announcement, the minister said: "We don't know who invented the lie, but we want to denounce the injustice of (diverting) President Evo Morales' plane to the international community", Xinhua reported.

The plane carrying Morales from Moscow, where he was attending a meeting of natural gas-producing nations, was diverted to Vienna after France and Portugal refused to allow it to enter their airspace.

Earlier Tuesday, Bolivia said it had not officially received an asylum request from Snowden but was willing to consider such a petition.

"Officially no request has arrived, but if it arrives, the president has said we will consider it," Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said at a press conference.

Garcia referred to President Morales' statements made Tuesday in Moscow that "if there is a petition, of course we are willing to discuss, to analyze the issue".

Also Tuesday, the WikiLeaks website revealed that Bolivia was among some 20 countries Snowden had requested political asylum from after withdrawing his asylum request from Russia because of the conditions imposed by President Vladimir Putin.

Putin publicly offered Snowden asylum on the condition that he stop affecting the US with his disclosures.

Snowden, a former contractor with the US National Security Agency (NSA), blew the lid off the agency's secret global surveillance programme, angering Washington, which has charged him with espionage.

Snowden first fled to Hong Kong, but is now reportedly at a Moscow airport transit zone awaiting word on asylum.

US Vice President Joe Biden has been asking countries to refuse Snowden asylum, as Ecuador's president recently revealed.

Brazil's foreign ministry Tuesday confirmed it received an asylum request from Snowden but said it had no plans to respond.

India on Tuesday refused Snowden's request.

How NSA Spying, Google and Chlorinated Chickens Are Pitting Germans Against Americans -- And What to Do About It

Oct 24 2014 10:34am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

These remarks are adapted from a talk at the Center for European Studies at Harvard on October 23. I see an increased nervousness in my country about America. Even though both our countries have an eagle on their coat of arms, people currently are focused on a different bird: the chicken. And not just any old chicken, but the "Chlorhuhn" chicken. Perhaps I should translate it for you: The "Chl ...

This is the second part of a two-part series. Read part one here. Part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's job, alongside several other law enforcement agencies, is to make that process more difficult at home, where harsh federal drug laws have ensured that such transactions are conducted -- until rece ...

There's A Selena Gomez Song In 'Citizenfour'

Oct 24 2014 9:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Laura Poitras' new documentary, "Citzenfour," is the kind of stirring thriller that David Fincher or Paul Greengrass could have turned into a feature film. Part of that feeling comes from the way Poitras films Edward Snowden's interviews with Glenn Greenwald, clandestine meetings that bubble with creeping paranoia and mounting tension; part of it comes from the music, which sounds like the most Trent Reznor-y score this side of "The Social Network." As ...

This week seemingly, like Banquo’s Ghost in Macbeth, a new law has appeared to haunt us and disappeared at the final curtain, unnoticed. This week the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 (ABCP) came into force. It is to give additional powers to the police, local authorities and some in the private sector to deal with problem people and situations. The background is that the European ...
