Bolivia denies Snowden on president's plane

Jul 3 2013, 1:50am CDT | by

La Paz, July 3 (IANS) Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca Tuesday denied that US whistleblower Edward Snowden was on the plane flying Bolivia's president out of Europe, after the aircraft was diverted on suspicion it was carrying the two men.

La Paz, July 3 — Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca Tuesday denied that US whistleblower Edward Snowden was on the plane flying Bolivia's president out of Europe, after the aircraft was diverted on suspicion it was carrying the two men.

In a televised announcement, the minister said: "We don't know who invented the lie, but we want to denounce the injustice of (diverting) President Evo Morales' plane to the international community", Xinhua reported.

The plane carrying Morales from Moscow, where he was attending a meeting of natural gas-producing nations, was diverted to Vienna after France and Portugal refused to allow it to enter their airspace.

Earlier Tuesday, Bolivia said it had not officially received an asylum request from Snowden but was willing to consider such a petition.

"Officially no request has arrived, but if it arrives, the president has said we will consider it," Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said at a press conference.

Garcia referred to President Morales' statements made Tuesday in Moscow that "if there is a petition, of course we are willing to discuss, to analyze the issue".

Also Tuesday, the WikiLeaks website revealed that Bolivia was among some 20 countries Snowden had requested political asylum from after withdrawing his asylum request from Russia because of the conditions imposed by President Vladimir Putin.

Putin publicly offered Snowden asylum on the condition that he stop affecting the US with his disclosures.

Snowden, a former contractor with the US National Security Agency (NSA), blew the lid off the agency's secret global surveillance programme, angering Washington, which has charged him with espionage.

Snowden first fled to Hong Kong, but is now reportedly at a Moscow airport transit zone awaiting word on asylum.

US Vice President Joe Biden has been asking countries to refuse Snowden asylum, as Ecuador's president recently revealed.

Brazil's foreign ministry Tuesday confirmed it received an asylum request from Snowden but said it had no plans to respond.

India on Tuesday refused Snowden's request.

Intelligence Director Says He Never Lied To Congress About NSA Surveillance

Sep 18 2014 9:13am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The director of national intelligence is disputing allegations that he lied to Congress about a surveillance program last year. James Clapper is rolling out a new national intelligence strategy that includes principles of ethics for intelligence officers. Clapper says it has been very disappointing to have his integrity questioned "because of a mistake." He was speaking Thursday to intelligence contractors in a ballroom at a Washington intelligence summit. C ...

Things Are Bad in the Good Old U.S. of A.

Sep 17 2014 12:31pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This weekend is the People's Climate March, which will almost certainly be the largest climate march in U.S. history. It is more than just a march about the environment, though, it is an opportunity to begin building a mass movement, one that has the potential to radically change the course of U.S. politics. As all of us living through this increasingly dire period of American history know, environmental devastation is just one of the many serious p ...

NSA Reform Bill Splits Reformers

Sep 16 2014 3:24pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

James Clapper became public enemy number one for civil liberties groups in 2013 when Edward Snowden's leaks revealed that he lied to Congress about the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance. One year later, the embattled director of national intelligence is the unlikely bedfellow of the American Civil Liberties Union in backing an NSA reform bill that has divided civil liberties groups. The differing views on the bill reflect a more fundamental disagreement abo ...

Open-Ended Lies

Sep 16 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Today, the United States moves forward with plans to attack ISIS, alongside the help of unlikely allies. Our government does so aware of the fact that many, if not most Americans disapprove. The American population is fearful of ISIS. Clearly, our government is too. But our fears may stem from different places. And our solutions may vary drastically, too. When there's such a great difference between what the American population thinks and ...

Bradley Manning says 'Let ISIS Succeed.' I say 'Shut That Cell Door!'

Sep 16 2014 11:55am CDT | Source: Big Government

Have they cut it off yet? The penis attached to traitorous transsexual Chelsea Manning, I mean. How else to explain the level of feverish disturbance necessary for the former Private Bradley to pen an op-ed saying we should "let ISIS succeed" in its mission to destroy half the Middle East, murdering, raping and torturing anyone in its way.  There's no doubt that dealing with ISIS, the Islam ...

Laura Poitras's Edward Snowden Documentary Is Being Released

Sep 16 2014 11:52am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

By now, the story of how a team of journalists met Edward Snowden in a Hong Kong hotel has become the stuff of legend, a modern-day update to Bob Woodward and Deep Throat in the parking garage. But the Snowden story has something Woodward's didn't: video footage of the encounter. The video is part of a new documentary called "CITIZENFOUR," by Laura Poitras, one of the journalists who met Snowden on that fateful day in 2013. On Tues ...

European Court to Investigate Law Allowing Security Services to Snoop on Journalists

Sep 16 2014 10:51am CDT | Source: Big Government

A British law that allows the authorities to snoop on journalists has been slammed as "not fit for purpose", and will be challenged in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Strasbourg. Lawyers for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ), who are bringing the case to the court, contend that the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (Ripa) contravenes Articles 8 and / or 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which allow for the ...
