First BRICS Business Council meets in South Africa

Johannesburg, Aug 19 (IANS) Business leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) are meeting here Monday to identify specific measures to eliminate barriers to growing trade and investment.

Johannesburg, Aug 19 — Business leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) are meeting here Monday to identify specific measures to eliminate barriers to growing trade and investment.

Prominent business leaders from 19 other African countries are also taking part in the first BRICS Business Council meeting at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The Council was established by the BRICS heads of state and government during their summit in Durban in March 2013, to develop and grow business, trade, manufacturing and investment ties amongst the group countries and between them and Africa.

Council chairperson Patrice Motsepe said the two-day meeting would identify specific measures and initiatives to increase trade, business, manufacturing and investment ties among member-countries.

"The meeting will identify specific measures and initiatives to increase trade, business, manufacturing and investment ties amongst the BRICS countries and between the BRICS countries and Africa.

"We will also propose measures to eliminate barriers or hurdles to growing trade and investment ties amongst the BRICS countries and between the BRICS countries and Africa" said Motsepe.

He said it was important that African business leaders and entrepreneurs established partnerships and joint ventures amongst themselves and also network and exchange ideas to ensure that they significantly benefit from the various business, trade, manufacturing and investment opportunities between the BRICS countries and Africa.

To this end, sessions involving the African and BRICS business leaders will focus on promoting and increasing trade and investment between the BRICS countries and Africa.

A statement issued by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said president Jacob Zuma and trade and industry minister Rob Davies were expected to address the meeting.

Zuma has described the establishment of the BRICS Business Council as a key measure to further increase intra-Brics trade and investment. The Council would serve as a platform to strengthen and promote economic, trade, business and investment ties amongst the business communities of the five BRICS countries.

2014 Vodacom Durban July
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A rhino poacher in South Africa has been sentenced to 77 years in prison in one of the heaviest penalties aimed at curbing poachers who target rhinos for their horns, which fetch a high price on the illegal market in parts of Asia. The sentencing of Mandla Chauke, a South African who was arrested in Kruger National Park in 2011, shows that South African courts are starting to r ...

The Nightmare of Gaza Continues

Jul 19 2014 6:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Northern Illinois v Massachusetts
I can only imagine the horror in Gaza today as Israel intensifies its assault of that overcrowded, impoverished strip. It is a continuing nightmare story of pain and loss, of trauma and devastation. The heartbreaking numbers by themselves tell part of the story -- with hundreds killed, thousands wounded, tens of thousands without homes, and now 600,000 without water. But the story of Gaza is more than these numbers and this current ...

Presbyterian General Assembly Biennial Meeting: My Message on Israel and Palestine

Jun 16 2014 1:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sarajevo: War Scars
As the Presbyterian General Assembly gathers for its biennial meeting, I reach out in prayer and solidarity that the Assembly will make a strong witness for reconciliation, justice and peace. I am aware that the Assembly will consider eight overtures on the confounding and intractable conflict in Israel and Palestine, however I am especially urging the Assembly to adopt the overture naming Israel as an apartheid state t ...

Italy will be without captain Gianluigi Buffon for their epic match against England on Saturday. Buffon confirmed an ankle injury will keep him on the sideline. The team practiced at the stadium in Manaus late Friday night when Buffon twisted his ankle and could not finish. Buffon is Italy’s go-to man for the past 15 years and was one of the main reasons why they won the 2006 World Cup. His importance showed even more in 2010 when he left in South Africa du ...

A person (L) looking to work within the
For the past few weeks, the country’s distinct national navel-gazing has shifted to the military. It began with horror stories about the treatment of veterans at Veterans Affairs facilities across the country and has reached a crescendo in the curious case of Taliban hostage Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, exchanged for five fierce-looking Muhammadans from Afghanistan’s Jihad Central. As to the first: Backlogs, limited services, fewer service providers, substandard treatment, filthy facilities an ...
