UN political affairs chief to hold dialogue in Cairo

Aug 20 2013, 3:45am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Aug 20 (IANS) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will "have a wide range of dialogue" in Cairo, Egypt, starting Tuesday amid the ongoing violence in that country.

United Nations, Aug 20 — UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman will "have a wide range of dialogue" in Cairo, Egypt, starting Tuesday amid the ongoing violence in that country.

Ban made the announcement Monday urging all Egyptian parties to enter into a dialogue in order to put an early end to the ongoing crisis, Xinhua reported.

At least 866 people have been killed across Egypt since the country's security forces dispersed sit-ins by protesters supporting ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

The extensive talks will focus on "how the United Nations can best support the initiatives to restore peace and forge conciliations in Egypt", Ban said.

Feltman, a former top US diplomat for the Middle East, will meet with a range of representatives of the military-appointed government of Egypt.

He will also go to several other countries in the Middle East for consultations, and will report to the secretary general on the Egyptian crisis.

Ban will take Feltman's advice into consideration before making new decisions on the issue.

"Preventing further loss of life should be the highest priority. I urge all Egyptians to exercise maximum restraint and resolve differences peacefully," Ban said.

"With such sharp polarisation in the Egyptian society, both the authorities and the political leaders share the responsibility for ending the current violence.

"They should spare no effort to swiftly adopt a credible plan to contain the violence and revive the political process hijacked by violence," he added.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council, after closed-door consultations, called on all parties in Egypt to end the violence and exercise maximum restraint.

"The United Nations is ready to support the Egyptian-led approaches to resolving the current crisis," said Ban.

Climate Rally Draws Tens of Thousands to the Streets

Sep 22 2014 12:41pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

One contingent of the multitudinous climate rallies that coalesced as a mass of more than 300,000 people on Sunday, September 21, stirred to life outside the TimeWarner Center, on Columbus Circle, which was symbolic on a number of levels. It is unclear how the site for this part of the demonstration, which hosted a multifaith gathering of believers, was decided. Near where a miniature Noah's Ark and a mosque stood was the colossal commercial behemoth housing "the shops of Co ...

Climate Change Hunger: World Leaders Must Act

Sep 19 2014 10:33am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Discussions on curbing greenhouse gas emissions always seem to proceed excruciatingly slowly, as climate change is forever being brushed aside as a far off concern for a distant future. They fail time and again because politicians of all stripes pay more attention to the short-term horizon of the next election than the world future generations will live in. Future generations - after all - cannot vote. That was, until now, the conventional wisdom. It is now becoming in ...

Measuring Up: How To Assess The Upcoming U.N. Climate Summit

Sep 16 2014 12:15pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: flickr/ United Nations Photo The September 23 U.N. climate summit in New York City is not an official U.N. negotiating session but in many ways it is more than that. While the official United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meetings have the potential to usher in bold treaties, they are also subject to bickering over minutia and watering down of expectations. The extensively hyped Conferen ...
