11 arrested as Egypt simmers with tension (Roundup)

Cairo, Aug 20 (IANS) Egypt continued to simmer with tension Tuesday even as 11 people were arrested in connection with attacks on security forces and the Muslim Brotherhood named a temporary new leader.

Cairo, Aug 20 — Egypt continued to simmer with tension Tuesday even as 11 people were arrested in connection with attacks on security forces and the Muslim Brotherhood named a temporary new leader.

The Egyptian armed forces Tuesday arrested the 11 people, including two Palestinians, in the Sinai over attacks on the police and army premises.

The forces raided several criminal hideouts early Tuesday morning and arrested them, Xinhua reported citing the official Egyptian news agency MENA.

The operation came one day after suspected militants ambushed two buses carrying security forces in Egypt's northern Sinai, killing at least 25 soldiers.

The buses were Monday carrying the policemen from their base in Rafah city to their homes for vacation, when the militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at the vehicles.

The security condition deteriorated in Sinai since the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak in 2011, and became worse after his successor Mohamed Morsi's government was toppled, which triggered violence between security forces and Morsi's supporters.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood Tuesday appointed Mahmoud Ezzat as its temporary new leader, after its general guide Mohamed Badie was arrested.

A statement on the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party website named Ezzat, deputy of the former general guide, as the new chief as per the group's internal regulations, Xinhua reported citing MENA.

"In the absence of the general guide either for travelling abroad, or for being sick or in emergency cases, his deputy is entitled with his responsibilities," the statement said.

Badie was arrested early Tuesday in an apartment in Tayran street in Nasr City district of Cairo and then transferred with intensive security measures to Torah prison, where former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons are detained

Two other leading members of the Brotherhood - Youssef Talaat and Hassan Maleik - were also arrested along with Badie.

On July 4, just a day after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, acting prosecutor general Ahmed Ezz el-Din had ordered an arrest warrant against the Brotherhood's top leader on charges of inciting the killing of anti-Morsi protestors.

Justice is right around the corner

The empty head in the White House continues his journey in the wilderness of “do nothing” since he doesn’t know what to do. This was the reality from the very beginning – as all were warned by the conservatives and tea-party people who know how to do the job and know what needs to be done but can’t due to the interference of the Democrats and the Obama administration, along with certain old-guard hacks in the ...

Now That the Guns Have Been Silenced

Aug 28 2014 10:29am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The new ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has immediately raised the same old question: Will it last, or is it merely just another pause, providing the prelude for the next round of fighting à la previous ceasefires? My reading of the situation that brought both sides to agree to suspend violence on an open-ended basis suggests otherwise. I believe the current ceasefire is different as it was achieved under completely different circumstances and may well last. ...

Gaza: Some Secrets Few Will Say Aloud

Aug 26 2014 8:58pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Is everyone in Gaza crazy? Did they deserve what happened to them? I was flying through the Phoenix airport this summer, stopped for lunch, and found myself sitting next to two men who were loudly discussing the recent Israeli bombing of Gaza. "They deserved what they got." "Israel should bomb them back to the stone age." "Gaza is nothing but a den of terrorists." I quickly figured out that I had to change tables. ...

Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carried out airstrikes in Libya a week ago but did not tell the United States government. New York Times correspondent David Kirkpatrick said it is because the new government does not trust the Obama administration. “Well, we know they were carried out by the United Arab Emirates from bases in Egypt,” he told NPR radio. “And we know both governments at best trie ...

Ex-archbishop: Ban jihadis from Britain

Aug 24 2014 12:16pm CDT | Source: WND

(DAILYMAIL) — The menacing advance of the Islamic State in Iraq should not prejudice Western people against Muslim people and the Islamic faith. I once served as an airman in Egypt and Iraq and can vouch for the kindness and goodness of many Muslim people. Indeed, more than three million have made their home in Britain, and by far the majority want to get on and make good and peaceful homes among us. But there is a darker side. Radical Islam is on the rise and imperilling our way of life, th ...
