Obama unswayed by Sanjay Gupta's views on weeds

Aug 21 2013, 11:16pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Aug 22 (IANS) Apparently unswayed by noted Indian-American medical journalist Sanjay Gupta's change of mind on medical marijuana, President Barack Obama isn't looking to change current federal laws relating to them anytime soon.

Washington, Aug 22 — Apparently unswayed by noted Indian-American medical journalist Sanjay Gupta's change of mind on medical marijuana, President Barack Obama isn't looking to change current federal laws relating to them anytime soon.

As White House spokesman Josh Earnest, explained Wednesday Obama "does not, at this point, advocate a change in the law" that places marijuana in the same class of drugs as heroin, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, and which deems cannabis to have no medical use.

Earnest described the Obama administration's position on marijuana as mainly focused on prosecuting drug traffickers rather than individual users in response to a question about Obama's views in the light of Gupta's shift on the use of medical marijuana.

Obama considered naming CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Gupta as surgeon general in 2009, but the neurosurgeon later said he withdrew his name so he could maintain his surgical career.

Gupta's online essay on marijuana, published Aug 9, was titled "Why I changed my mind on weed." In it, he described changing his own stance on medical marijuana after researching the topic for his CNN documentary "Weed."

He also apologized for what he said was his misguided previous stance saying "I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis."

According to CNN Obama last weighed in on the use of marijuana after two states - Washington and Colorado - legalised the recreational use of the drug.

"This is a tough problem, because Congress has not yet changed the law," Obama told ABC News.

"I head up the executive branch; we're supposed to be carrying out laws. And so what we're going to need to have is a conversation about, How do you reconcile a federal law that still says marijuana is a federal offense and state laws that say that it's legal?"

Obama wants a 'mulligan' on Iraq

Oct 22 2014 7:10pm CDT | Source: WND

In golf, Obama’s favorite pastime, the “mulligan” has become SOP in friendly games. A mulligan is a stroke that is replayed (due to bad luck or a blunder) from the spot of the previous stroke without penalty. The result is that the hole is scored as if the errant shot had never been made. Now the president expects the country to give him a mulligan, or a do-over, on Iraq. It isn’t happening. First there is that ...

Dems realizing Obama's danger – to them

“This is a serious disease, but we can’t give in to hysteria or fear …” – Barack Obama, Oct. 18, 2014 The Jews who had emerged from cattle cars, alarmed because they’d just been ordered to remove their clothes, were also reassured by the Gestapo. They’d had a long, hard trip, they were told, and were only being stripped down for a “common shower.” Of course, the “shower” was a gas chamber, and the rest is history. This is a hell of a psycho-dynamic Obama is using, i ...

Media can't un-tell their Ferguson lies

Oct 22 2014 7:03pm CDT | Source: WND

When “government officials” talk to the New York Times, as they have been doing in recent days in regard to the August shooting of Michael Brown, they do so strategically. In this case, the Department of Justice seems to be preparing the public for the likelihood that Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson will not be charged in Brown’s death. As a case in point, an Oct. 17 Times story not only recounts Wilson’s ver ...
