Obama unswayed by Sanjay Gupta's views on weeds

Aug 21 2013, 11:16pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Aug 22 (IANS) Apparently unswayed by noted Indian-American medical journalist Sanjay Gupta's change of mind on medical marijuana, President Barack Obama isn't looking to change current federal laws relating to them anytime soon.

Washington, Aug 22 — Apparently unswayed by noted Indian-American medical journalist Sanjay Gupta's change of mind on medical marijuana, President Barack Obama isn't looking to change current federal laws relating to them anytime soon.

As White House spokesman Josh Earnest, explained Wednesday Obama "does not, at this point, advocate a change in the law" that places marijuana in the same class of drugs as heroin, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, and which deems cannabis to have no medical use.

Earnest described the Obama administration's position on marijuana as mainly focused on prosecuting drug traffickers rather than individual users in response to a question about Obama's views in the light of Gupta's shift on the use of medical marijuana.

Obama considered naming CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Gupta as surgeon general in 2009, but the neurosurgeon later said he withdrew his name so he could maintain his surgical career.

Gupta's online essay on marijuana, published Aug 9, was titled "Why I changed my mind on weed." In it, he described changing his own stance on medical marijuana after researching the topic for his CNN documentary "Weed."

He also apologized for what he said was his misguided previous stance saying "I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis."

According to CNN Obama last weighed in on the use of marijuana after two states - Washington and Colorado - legalised the recreational use of the drug.

"This is a tough problem, because Congress has not yet changed the law," Obama told ABC News.

"I head up the executive branch; we're supposed to be carrying out laws. And so what we're going to need to have is a conversation about, How do you reconcile a federal law that still says marijuana is a federal offense and state laws that say that it's legal?"

Hillary Got It Right on Ferguson and Race

Aug 31 2014 7:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Hillary Clinton was pilloried and battered for days on end for not uttering a peep about the Michael Brown slaying, the Ferguson disorders, and most importantly race. Clinton took heat on this for the simple reason that she almost certainly will run for president and likely win. It would look pretty peculiar for a presidential candidate, especially a Democratic presidential candidate, and likely winner not to say anyt ...

President Barack Obama’s lack of a clear strategy to confront the Islamic State set off resounding frustration among Republicans Sunday. U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., lamented Obama’s reluctance compared to tough talk from British Prime Minister David Cameron, who raised his country’s terrorism threat level to "severe" and announced new plans to seize jihadists’ passports. "What is President Obama waiting for?" King s ...

Why isn't Obama afraid?

Aug 31 2014 3:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Is there nothing that horrifies the president? Not even brutally cutting off the head of an American journalist in front of a camera? How about the kidnapping of hundreds of male and female school children, and doing terrible things to them? Think the worst, and it’s worse than that. For many, death is a form of rescue. What about attacking Christian churches, killing the priests and burning the buildings and the people in them to the g ...

America at the tipping point, Part 1

Editor’s note: Chuck Norris’ weekly political column debuts each Monday in WND and is then syndicated by Creators News Service for publication elsewhere. His column in WND often runs hundreds of words longer than the subsequent release to other media. Is history going to repeat itself? I recently read the book, “7 Tipping Points that Saved the World,” by Christ Stewart and Ted Stewart. In it, the authors describe how radical Islam came within a hair’s bre ...

Rocker girl, mother of two... ISIS recruit who wants to behead Christians with a dull knife

Aug 31 2014 3:12pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Islamic State's recruiting efforts across the Western world have been disturbingly successful.  At least two Americans have died fighting for ISIS; both were universally described as fairly ordinary American kids by everyone who knew them, only a year or two ago.  The man who beheaded American journalist James Foley on video was almost certainly a British citizen, most likely Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, a West London rapper from an affluent home whose music was played on BBC Radio O ...

If Barack Obama's hideous foreign policy debacles were a stage play, this is the point where Hillary Clinton would be lowered on wires to fly around the stage shrieking "WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?"  Tripoli has fallen to Islamists, prompting Egypt and the United Arab Emirates to conduct bombing runs against the Muslim Brotherhood without even bothering to inform former U.S. President Barack Obama (wh ...

This one really did start with Bush …

Aug 31 2014 2:00pm CDT | Source: WND

Barack Obama richly deserves to be ostracized, impeached and removed from office for a plethora of high crimes and misdemeanors committed since and including his inauguration on Jan. 20, 2009, and re-inauguration on Jan. 20, 2013. His impeachable offenses run the gamut from the abuse of power and treason to willful failure to “faithfully execute” the laws of the United States, including his despicable refusal to enforce America’s border and immigration law ...

Feds May Reimburse Medicare 'End-of-Life Discussions' After Mocking Palin's 'Death Panels'

Aug 31 2014 1:55pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Years after former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was mocked for being concerned about "death panels," the federal government may reimburse Medicare doctors for end-of-life consultations that critics say would only encourage sick patients to reject costly treatments to prolong life. The New York Times reports that "Medicare may begin covering end-of-life discussions next year if it approves a recen ...

Romney Faults Obama for Immigration Crisis

Aug 31 2014 1:10pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Mitt Romney appeared on WNYM's "The Cats Round Table" with John Catsimatidis today and took on Barack Obama over domestic issues, including immigration.  "The President should have enforced our immigration laws from the very beginning. His announcement of a form of amnesty only encouraged people to continue to flood over the border. So the right answer, of course, is to secure our border and hopefully to put in a series of immigration policy reforms so t ...
