Mubarak's release from jail ordered, to be under house arrest (Roundup)

Aug 22 2013, 10:24am CDT | by IANS

Cairo, Aug 22 (IANS) A court in Egypt has ordered a prison in Cairo to release ex-president Hosni Mubarak even as supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi called for protest rallies.

Cairo, Aug 22 — A court in Egypt has ordered a prison in Cairo to release ex-president Hosni Mubarak even as supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi called for protest rallies.

The court's order came after the the last of the corruption cases against Mubarak have been disposed of.

Mubarak will be transferred by military helicopter to his home arrest for security reasons, Xinhua reported citing Egypt's official news agency, which in turn quoted a security source.

According to some local media, Mubarak will be sent to Maady Military Hospital in Cairo after leaving prison.

On Wednesday, the court accepted Mubarak's petition over the corruption case of Ahram institution, and his lawyer paid 18.3 million Egyptian pounds (about $2.61 million)- the value of gifts which Mubarak and his two sons accepted via his information minister.

Then the court referred the case to the prosecution as the sole authority to determine Mubarak's release unless charged with other corruption cases.

In light of the state of emergency in the country, Interim Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi, the deputy military ruler, ordered that Mubarak be placed under home arrest to avoid more complicity in the politically divided country.

Mubarak is still banned from travelling abroad as he still faces a retrial on charges of involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 unrest that eventually toppled him.

Meanwhile, supporters of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi called on the Egyptian people to protest against the army Friday.

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, consisting of 33 Islamic movements, including the Muslim Brotherhood, Wednesday asked people to protest after the Friday prayer.

The alliance did not mention the venues for their rallies, according to Xinhua.

Egypt has witnessed unprecedented violent clashes since security forces dispersed two major pro-Morsi sit-ins in the country a week ago. Till now, nearly 1,000 people have been killed across the country, including some 100 policemen.

The alliance has failed over the past three days to organise massive marches, while the Egyptian authorities have detained the Muslim Brotherhood's top leader Tuesday over inciting violence and killing anti-Morsi protesters.

Islamist groups in Egypt have been accusing Morsi's ouster in early July as a "military coup".

Egypt has been undergoing a democratic transition since the fall of president Hosni Mubarak two years ago. In July this year, Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president, was deposed by the armed forces after only one year in office.

The constitution was suspended and an interim government was then installed.

Take up the White Man’s burden— The savage wars of peace— Fill full the mouth of Famine And bid the sickness cease; And when your goal is nearest The end for others sought, Watch sloth and heathen Folly Bring all your hopes to nought. - Rudyard Kipling, “The White Man’s Burden” Nothing better encapsulates President Barack Obama’s foreign policy than the glaring contrast Tuesday between his adamant refusal to send ground troops to confront the threat of ...

Dershowitz: Obama support of Arab Spring 'big mistake'

Sep 15 2014 7:43pm CDT | Source: WND

NEW YORK – Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz, a supporter of Barack Obama’s election in 2012, is offering stinging criticism of the president’s Middle East policy, suggesting it led to the ISIS crisis and broad instability in the region. “It was big mistake to jump on the Arab Spring enthusiastically, without realizing it was soon going to turn into an ‘Arab Winter,’” Dershowitz told WND. Dershowitz is the author of a newly issued e-book, “ ...

Obama covered Muslim Brotherhood tracks to Benghazi

Sep 15 2014 7:24pm CDT | Source: WND

Almost immediately following the Benghazi attack, the Obama administration possessed information indicating some Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood participation in the assault, yet the Obama administration kept this critical piece of information from the public, reveals a new book, “The Real Benghazi Story,” by New York Times bestselling author Aaron Klein. The attack took place less than two months before the November 2012 presidential election. Klein notes Obama could have ...

Rand Paul: Targeting Secular Dictators Created ISIS

Sep 11 2014 10:16am CDT | Source: Big Government

In response to President Obama’s foreign policy speech Wednesday night, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said that the United States should approach toppling Middle East dictators more cautiously in the future, warning that radical Islam typically rose up to replace it. “While I do support doing whatever it takes to take out ISIS, we need to remember why we got here,” he told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “And the reason we got here is because we took it upon ourselves to topple secular dict ...

Obama Never Has a Plan

Aug 29 2014 8:19am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Thursday, President Obama held a press conference in which he humiliated himself entirely on the question of America’s handling of the terror group ISIS. Explaining that he had to consult Congress and check the pulse of Americans, Obama stated, “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. We don’t have a strategy yet.” Which begs the question: what the hell does this guy do for a living? ISIS has been on the move since April 20 ...

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

Aug 8 2014 10:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For years, commentators have attempted to peg down just what the Obama Doctrine is. His allies have labeled the Obama Doctrine a form of realism about the limits of American power. His critics have labeled the Obama Doctrine “leading from behind.”   In 2009, President Obama came up with his own definition of an Obama Doctrine: “we're only one nation... the problems that we confront, whether it's drug cartels, climate change ...

9 Obama Foreign Policy Pronouncements That Now Look Especially Idiotic

Aug 7 2014 10:26am CDT | Source: Big Government

In Iraq, the Islamic State has now grabbed control of the Iraqi city of Sinjar. Tens of thousands of residents, according to the UK Guardian, have fled to the mountains, where they face a choice: they can either die of dehydration, or they can risk death from ISIS in the city. “Food is low, ammunition is low, and so is water,” one Sinjar refugee said. “We have one piece of bread to share between 10 ...

Is Obama Really Adrift in the World?

Jul 31 2014 8:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For all the hands shaken and hamburgers eaten, President Obama has never quite shaken his reputation for detachment. He is the "cool" president who doesn't lose his temper even when he should. He is the former constitutional law professor who is too "academic" for the Oval Office. He uses his brain when he should be relying more on other body parts: guts, heart, cojones. He surrounds himself with a small coterie of friends and lacks the common touch. All of this is non ...
