Mubarak's release from jail ordered, to be under house arrest (Roundup)

Aug 22 2013, 10:24am CDT | by IANS

Cairo, Aug 22 (IANS) A court in Egypt has ordered a prison in Cairo to release ex-president Hosni Mubarak even as supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi called for protest rallies.

Cairo, Aug 22 — A court in Egypt has ordered a prison in Cairo to release ex-president Hosni Mubarak even as supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi called for protest rallies.

The court's order came after the the last of the corruption cases against Mubarak have been disposed of.

Mubarak will be transferred by military helicopter to his home arrest for security reasons, Xinhua reported citing Egypt's official news agency, which in turn quoted a security source.

According to some local media, Mubarak will be sent to Maady Military Hospital in Cairo after leaving prison.

On Wednesday, the court accepted Mubarak's petition over the corruption case of Ahram institution, and his lawyer paid 18.3 million Egyptian pounds (about $2.61 million)- the value of gifts which Mubarak and his two sons accepted via his information minister.

Then the court referred the case to the prosecution as the sole authority to determine Mubarak's release unless charged with other corruption cases.

In light of the state of emergency in the country, Interim Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi, the deputy military ruler, ordered that Mubarak be placed under home arrest to avoid more complicity in the politically divided country.

Mubarak is still banned from travelling abroad as he still faces a retrial on charges of involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 unrest that eventually toppled him.

Meanwhile, supporters of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi called on the Egyptian people to protest against the army Friday.

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, consisting of 33 Islamic movements, including the Muslim Brotherhood, Wednesday asked people to protest after the Friday prayer.

The alliance did not mention the venues for their rallies, according to Xinhua.

Egypt has witnessed unprecedented violent clashes since security forces dispersed two major pro-Morsi sit-ins in the country a week ago. Till now, nearly 1,000 people have been killed across the country, including some 100 policemen.

The alliance has failed over the past three days to organise massive marches, while the Egyptian authorities have detained the Muslim Brotherhood's top leader Tuesday over inciting violence and killing anti-Morsi protesters.

Islamist groups in Egypt have been accusing Morsi's ouster in early July as a "military coup".

Egypt has been undergoing a democratic transition since the fall of president Hosni Mubarak two years ago. In July this year, Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president, was deposed by the armed forces after only one year in office.

The constitution was suspended and an interim government was then installed.

Is Obama Really Adrift in the World?

Jul 31 2014 8:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For all the hands shaken and hamburgers eaten, President Obama has never quite shaken his reputation for detachment. He is the "cool" president who doesn't lose his temper even when he should. He is the former constitutional law professor who is too "academic" for the Oval Office. He uses his brain when he should be relying more on other body parts: guts, heart, cojones. He surrounds himself with a small coterie of friends and lack ...

Gaza: The Consequences of Voting While Muslim

Jul 17 2014 6:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Palestinians of Gaza are guilty of that new post-Cold War misdemeanor: voting while Muslim. The punishment for this crime has been eight years of economic hardship, international isolation, and periodic Israeli bombardments. Like the Algerians in 1990 and the Egyptians in 2012, Gazans went to the polls in 2006 and voted for the wrong party. Rather than supporting the secular choice, they cast their ballots for Hamas. Not all Palestinians are Musli ...

WASHINGTON – Bahrain’s recent expulsion of a U.S. State Department official after visiting with a Shiite opposition leader was the result of pressure from Saudi Arabia, indicating relations between the U.S. and Riyadh are further deteriorating. Bahrain declared U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Tom Malinowski persona non grata, or “no longer welcome,” after he had met with the leader of the country’s largest Shiite group, Al Wefaq. An Egyptian cleric formerly known as the "preacher of the revolution" during the revolt against President Hosni Mubarak warned Egyptian television viewers this week that Muslim Brotherhood sheiks have issued a fatwa permitting "anal jihad" for terrorists far from their wives, which is exactly what it sounds like. Egypt and Israel Are Linked

Jun 13 2014 2:40pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The equation is clear and simple to understand. The security of Egypt has an effect on the security of Israel. And the security of both Egypt and Israel has a huge impact of the stability of the entire Middle East region. I will say it, you can say it, but seldom does the leader of an Arab country come out and flatly say it, too. Arab leaders want to be popular leaders and to do that they must spew forth rabid an ...

Hillary Claims She Differed with Obama on Middle East

Jun 8 2014 4:03am CDT | Source: Big Government

Hillary Clinton is trying desperately to create some distance between herself and Barack Obama’s disastrous foreign policy record with regard to the Middle East. Clinton is attempting to woo Jewish voters by asserting that unlike Obama, she thinks that when the Obama administration pushed for a freeze on the building of new Israeli homes in settlements, it was a mistake. Really. She supports the settlements? Here’s Hillary Clinton in December, 2010, ...

Former Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi prepares to assume Egypt’s presidency already having appeared to his fellow citizens in a number of historical guises. A year ago, he posed as the reincarnation of Muhammad Naguib, the general who led his fellow officers to overthrow the Egyptian monarchy in 1952 but then urged them to return to the barracks and restore democracy. For his enthusiastic followers, Sisi has since morphed into Gamal Abdel Nasser, the colonel who shoved Naguib asi ...
