Mubarak leaves prison for house arrest (Intro Roundup)

Aug 22 2013, 10:42am CDT | by IANS

Cairo, Aug 22 (IANS) Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak arrived in a military hospital in Cairo Thursday after being freed from a prison to be put in house arrest even as supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi called for protest rallies.

Cairo, Aug 22 — Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak arrived in a military hospital in Cairo Thursday after being freed from a prison to be put in house arrest even as supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi called for protest rallies.

A military helicopter carrying Mubarak arrived in Maadi Military Hospital in Cairo from Tora prison Thursday, Xinhua reported citing state TV.

Earlier in the day, the Egyptian prosecution had ordered the prison to release Mubarak after he was cleared of the last of his corruption cases.

On Wednesday, the court accepted Mubarak's petition over the corruption case of Ahram institution, and his lawyer paid 18.3 million Egyptian pounds (about $2.61 million)- the value of gifts which Mubarak and his two sons accepted via his information minister.

Then the court referred the case to the prosecution as the sole authority to determine Mubarak's release unless charged with other corruption cases.

In light of the state of emergency in the country, Interim Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi ordered that Mubarak be placed under home arrest.

According to Egypt's official news agency MENA, Mubarak chose to spend his period of home arrest in Maadi hospital, which is located in Maadi district in Cairo.

"Mubarak was transferred to the Maadi Military Hospital upon his personal request," MENA quoted Moustafa Bazz, assistant to interior minister for the prisons department sector, as saying.

Mubarak is banned from travelling abroad as he still faces a retrial on charges of involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 unrest that eventually toppled him.

Meanwhile, supporters of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi called on the Egyptian people to protest against the army Friday.

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, consisting of 33 Islamic movements, including the Muslim Brotherhood, Wednesday asked people to protest after the Friday prayer.

The alliance did not mention the venues for their rallies, according to Xinhua.

Egypt has witnessed unprecedented violent clashes since security forces dispersed two major pro-Morsi sit-ins in the country a week ago. Till now, nearly 1,000 people have been killed across the country, including some 100 policemen.

The alliance has failed over the past three days to organise massive marches, while the Egyptian authorities have detained the Muslim Brotherhood's top leader Tuesday over inciting violence and killing anti-Morsi protesters.

Islamist groups in Egypt have been accusing Morsi's ouster in early July as a "military coup".

Egypt has been undergoing a democratic transition since the fall of president Hosni Mubarak two years ago. In July this year, Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president, was deposed by the armed forces after only one year in office.

The constitution was suspended and an interim government was then installed.

Obama Never Has a Plan

Aug 29 2014 8:19am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Thursday, President Obama held a press conference in which he humiliated himself entirely on the question of America’s handling of the terror group ISIS. Explaining that he had to consult Congress and check the pulse of Americans, Obama stated, “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. We don’t have a strategy yet.” Which begs the question: what the hell does this guy do for a living? ISIS has been on the move since April 2013, when Abu Bakr al-Baghd ...

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

Aug 8 2014 10:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For years, commentators have attempted to peg down just what the Obama Doctrine is. His allies have labeled the Obama Doctrine a form of realism about the limits of American power. His critics have labeled the Obama Doctrine “leading from behind.”   In 2009, President Obama came up with his own definition of an Obama Doctrine: “we're only one nation... the problems that we confront, whether it's drug cartels, climate change, terrorism, you name it, can't be solved ...

9 Obama Foreign Policy Pronouncements That Now Look Especially Idiotic

Aug 7 2014 10:26am CDT | Source: Big Government

In Iraq, the Islamic State has now grabbed control of the Iraqi city of Sinjar. Tens of thousands of residents, according to the UK Guardian, have fled to the mountains, where they face a choice: they can either die of dehydration, or they can risk death from ISIS in the city. “Food is low, ammunition is low, and so is water,” one Sinjar refugee said. “We have one piece of bread to share between 10 people. We have to walk 2 kilometers to get water. Th ...

Is Obama Really Adrift in the World?

Jul 31 2014 8:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For all the hands shaken and hamburgers eaten, President Obama has never quite shaken his reputation for detachment. He is the "cool" president who doesn't lose his temper even when he should. He is the former constitutional law professor who is too "academic" for the Oval Office. He uses his brain when he should be relying more on other body parts: guts, heart, cojones. He surrounds himself with a small coterie of ...

Gaza: The Consequences of Voting While Muslim

Jul 17 2014 6:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Palestinians of Gaza are guilty of that new post-Cold War misdemeanor: voting while Muslim. The punishment for this crime has been eight years of economic hardship, international isolation, and periodic Israeli bombardments. Like the Algerians in 1990 and the Egyptians in 2012, Gazans went to the polls in 2006 and voted for the wrong party. Rather than supporting the secular choice, they cast their ballots for Hamas. Not all Palestinians are Muslim (6 percent or s ...

Commentator Bob Beckel, who was national campaign manager for Democrat Walter Mondale’s presidential bid and these days often argues on behalf of the progressive pathway for America on Fox News, has blasted Atlas Shrugs publisher Pamela Geller, a noted critic of the move to “Islamize” America. “You better be very careful … you’re a woman. Be very careful saying who I carry water for because you have no idea what you’re talking about,” Beckel said during a heating exchange on Fox’s Sean Ha ...

Muslim Brotherhood Cleric Authorizes 'Anal Jihad' for Lonely Terrorists

Jul 11 2014 2:05pm CDT | Source: Big Government

An Egyptian cleric formerly known as the "preacher of the revolution" during the revolt against President Hosni Mubarak warned Egyptian television viewers this week that Muslim Brotherhood sheiks have issued a fatwa permitting "anal jihad" for terrorists far from their wives, which is exactly what it sounds like. In televised remarks on Egypt's Al-Tahrir TV on June 26 and translated into English by the Middle East Media Research Institute, cleric Mazhar Sh ...
