US warns Syria over chemical weapon use

Aug 27 2013, 1:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Aug 27 (IANS) As Obama administration officials reacted angrily to reports of a major chemical attack in Syria last week that reportedly killed and wounded more than 3,000 people, US mainstream media cautioned against any precipitate action.

Washington, Aug 27 — As Obama administration officials reacted angrily to reports of a major chemical attack in Syria last week that reportedly killed and wounded more than 3,000 people, US mainstream media cautioned against any precipitate action.

President Barack Obama "will be making an informed decision about how to respond to this indiscriminate use" of chemical weapons, said US Secretary of State John Kerry Monday calling the attack "inexcusable" and "undeniable."

Obama "believes there must be accountability" for those who use chemical weapons, he said in a stern warning to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad noting the evidence "strongly indicates" they were used in Syria.

"We know the Syrian regime maintains custody" of such weapons and has the rockets to use them," Kerry said amid speculation about the Obama administration's response.

At the White House, spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Monday that Obama was evaluating "a response to the clear use on a mass scale with repugnant results of chemical weapons," adding that "there is very little doubt that the Syrian regime ... used those weapons."

For almost two years, Obama has avoided direct military involvement in Syria's civil war, only escalating aid to rebel fighters in June after suspected smaller-scale chemical weapons attacks by Syrian government forces, CNN noted.

However, last week's attack on a Damascus suburb had obliterated the "red line" Obama set just over a year ago against the use of Syria's chemical weapons stocks, it said.

But cautioning against a hasty response, influential New York Times said "A political agreement is still the best solution to this deadly conflict, and every effort must be made to find one.

"President Obama has resisted demands that he intervene militarily and in force. Though Mr. Assad's use of chemical weapons surely requires a response of some kind, the arguments against deep American involvement remain as compelling as ever," it said.

"The United States can't dictate the outcome in Syria, and it would be foolish to send ground troops in an effort to do so," said the Washington Post. "But by combining military measures with training, weapons supplies and diplomacy, it could exercise considerable influence," it said.

Influential political news site Politico also noted that despite mounting evidence that the Assad regime used chemical weapons on his people, many members of Congress still don't see a role for the United States military in Syria.

"A raft of Republican and Democratic lawmakers - including those directly involved in intelligence oversight - think the US would be wise to take a pass on military intervention in the war-torn country," it said.

The administration's options range widely - from sending in ground troops to deploying an air campaign to cripple Assad's resources to humanitarian aid, Politico said. "But at this point, members of Congress seem unconvinced."

The Challenges in Defeating ISIS

Aug 27 2014 1:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Containing and ultimately defeating ISIS will require both short and long-term response. ISIS expansion has been made possible by political conditions in Syria and Iraq, ethnic-religious/sectarian divisions and violence and terror in the region, and the failures of the US and international community. Bashar al-Assad's unprincipled and disproportionate military response to the "threat" of the democratization wave, the Arab Spring, with the s ...

Exclusive–Rand Paul: Hillary's 'War Hawk' Policies Led to Benghazi Attack, Rise of ISIS

Aug 27 2014 11:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) certainly has a knack for boldness. On Sunday's Meet the Press, he dubbed U.S. military engagement in Libya “Hillary’s war” and stated the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) is not a result of President Obama's inaction in the Middle East but the unintended consequence of the U.S. military engagement in Libya. The comments predictably caused heads in the GOP's foreign policy establishment to exp ...

Records show that Australian, British, and Malaysian women travel to Iraq and Syria to participate in jihad al-nikah, or sexual jihad, for the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists. They intend to become comfort women for the jihadists as the men continue to establish a Caliphate in Iraq and Syria. "These women are believed to have offered themselves in sexual comfort roles to ISIS fighters who are attempting ...

For Obama, an Indispensable Lesson from the Middle East

Aug 26 2014 4:31pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama, who by any measure is a smart and shrewd politician, must be feeling rather foolish nowadays. Not only have his predictions proved wrong about Iraq and al-Qaeda, but, under his watch, America is also being drawn back into the Iraq quagmire three years after it withdrew. The president was all optimistic when he secured U.S. withdrawal from Iraq in 2011. But his claim of "extraordinary achi ...

An Islamic braggart's last words

Aug 25 2014 6:26pm CDT | Source: WND

“God willing, we will raise the flag of Allah in the White House.” That was the statement of the Islamic State press officer Abu Mosa, just before he was killed by Syrian forces loyal to dictator Bashar al-Assad, whose regime also is fighting against the Islamic State, or ISIS. The Washington Times also quoted Mosa declaring: “Don’t be cowards and attack us with drones. Instead, send your soldiers, the ones we humiliated in Iraq. We ...

ISIS and the Obama Administration's Drumbeat of War

Aug 22 2014 7:19pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Is the man who ran for President as the anti-war candidate about to take America to war in Iraq and Syria? Listening to the Obama administration this week, it certainly sounds that way. U.S. engagement with ISIS started as a kind of quasi-humanitarian mission. Earlier this month, President Obama indicated the main goal of the strikes and of military support to Iraq and the Kurds was "preventing an act of genocide." But aft ...

These Four Crises Are Stretching The World’s Aid Workers To The Breaking Point And Beyond

South Sudanese take shelter in U.N. mission CREDIT: United Nations A World Health Organization official earlier this year declared that 2013 was the worst year that the international community had seen in more than sixty years. The three crises that were faced that year taxed the system almost more than it could bear. This year — with four crises labeled as the highest priority possible — is shaping up to be even wo ...

Aug 17 2014 8:42am CDT | Source: Big Government

This article originally appeared in The Guardian: Abu al-Mutasim, 18, from a Syrian border town in the province of Deir Ezzor, joined the rebellion against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in early 2012. He left his family home in Bahrain, where his parents worked, and fought for the Free Syrian Army for a few months before joining the hardline group Ahrar al-Sham. Around the end of the year, disillusioned, he went to visit his family. His parents banned h ...
