UN completes first day of probe in Syria

Aug 27 2013, 3:40am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Aug 27 (IANS) A team of UN chemical weapons inspectors in Syria carried out their first day of investigation despite a sniper attack on their convoy, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said.

United Nations, Aug 27 — A team of UN chemical weapons inspectors in Syria carried out their first day of investigation despite a sniper attack on their convoy, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said.

"What I am told at this time is that their vehicle was attacked by unknown snipers, but despite such very difficult circumstances, our team returned to Damascus and replaced their car and proceeded to a suburb of Damascus to carry on their investigation," Xinhua quoted Ban as saying Monday.

Earlier Monday, the UN convoy came under sniper fire on their way to a suspected chemical-weapons attack site. The first vehicle of the UN investigators was "deliberately shot at multiple times" by unidentified snipers, the UN said.

The inspectors "visited two hospitals", "interviewed witnesses, survivors and doctors" and also "collected some samples" at the site of the latest alleged use of chemical weapons Aug 21.

"It was a very productive day," said Farhan Haq, the UN spokesman, adding that the team, led by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom, was "already gathering valuable evidence".

The UN team was in a buffer zone between government and opposition-held areas when it came under attack.

Ban said the UN had made a "strong complaint" to the Syrian government and opposition forces. The rebels and Assad's government traded blame for the sniper assault just as they did over the chemical attack.

On Aug 21, the Syrian opposition claimed that 1,300 people were killed in chemical weapon attacks carried out by the government army on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus. The Syrian government strongly denied the accusation.

The UN investigation team was originally scheduled to spend up to 14 days, with a possible extension, probing the alleged use of chemical weapons in the northern Khan al-Assal town and two other undisclosed locations.

Protect the Future of Peacekeeping

Nov 4 2014 8:38am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On a Friday in early October -- amid a flood of news on ISIL and an escalating Ebola crisis -- it might have been easy to miss this headline: Nine United Nations Peacekeepers were ambushed and killed by gunmen in Mali. Less than a week later, another Peacekeeper in Mali was killed in a rocket attack. However, much as these tragedies may seem part of peacekeeping's inherent risks, they were more than just a couple stories amid a mass of tro ...

UN Climate Change Report Delivers Stark Warnings

Nov 2 2014 6:35am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday. The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment didn't offer any surprises, nor was it expected to since it combin ...

We Must Not Even Think of Accusing Leonardo DiCaprio of Hypocrisy

Nov 1 2014 3:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Friday’s crash of the Virgin Galactic space-plane in California was, of course, a tragedy: One test-pilot was killed, and another seriously injured.  But there is, at least, a silver lining: There’s no need to worry about another possible issue concerning Richard Branson’s spaceflight venture—namely, that all those internal-combustion-powered flights would contribute to the dread danger of climate change.   Indeed, to t ...
