Obama says no decision made on Syria

Aug 28 2013, 9:30pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Aug 29 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Wednesday said that he has not made a decision about how to respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria's internal conflict, media reported.

Washington, Aug 29 — US President Barack Obama Wednesday said that he has not made a decision about how to respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria's internal conflict, media reported.

"I have not made a decision," the president said in an interview with the PBS NewsHour at the White House, reiterating he is weighing options in the wake of the chemical attack in the suburbs of Damascus, capital of Syria, Aug 21, in which 1,300 people were reportedly killed, Xinhua reported.

But he said the international norm against the use of banned weapons needs to be "kept in place".

"We have concluded that the Syrian government in fact carried these out, and if that's so, then there need to be international consequences," he added. "I have no interest in any kind of open- ended conflict in Syria."

US House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner Wednesday joined some of his peers by sending a letter to Obama, calling on the president to make his case for launching military strikes on Syria in response to the gas attack.

The top lawmaker demanded that Obama "make the case to the American people and Congress for how potential military action will secure American national security interests, preserve America's credibility, deter the future use of chemical weapons, and, critically, be a part of our broader policy and strategy".

"I think it's important that if, we make a choice to have repercussions for the use of chemical weapons, then the (Bashar al-Assad) Assad regime, which is involved in a civil war, trying to protect itself, will have received a pretty strong signal, that in fact, it better not do it again," Obama said.

Obama pledged a "limited, tailored approach" that will not draw the United States into the conflict, saying direct military engagement "would not help the situation on the ground."

US media reported that the military strikes under consideration will hit targets inside Syria, involving sea-launched cruise missiles or possibly long-range bombers.

Administration officials said the options aim not at toppling the Syrian government led by al-Assad, but rather a direct response to the use of sarin gas last week.

The Syrian government and opposition, engaged in conflict since March 2011, have been blaming each other for the alleged use of the chemical weapons.

An assessment on Syrian government's culpability is expected to be released by the American intelligence later this week.

TALLINN, ESTONIA - Let's face it: NATO summits aren't usually the most scintillating gatherings. "President Obama has supposedly said that he finds these things dull," said Jeremy Shapiro, a fellow at the Brookings Institution. "Former Secretary of State Robert Gates reportedly wouldn’t go to NATO meetings unless his staff supplied him with a sufficient number of crossword puzzles." Read full article ...

Even California Has Major Gripes With Obama, Poll Finds

Sep 2 2014 3:43pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama’s popularity in California has fallen to an all-time low, with his approval rating among voters down to just 45 percent, a Field Poll released Tuesday found. This is the first time his approval has dipped below 50 percent in the state since 2011 and is a 5-point drop from June, Field Poll founder and advisor Mervin Field and director Mark DiCamillo noted in a press release. It’s a stark contrast to the 62 percent positive rating he held ...

Steyn: Difference in Obama Approach to Freeing Bergdahl vs Sotloff, Foley 'Fascinating'

Sep 2 2014 2:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In filling in for Rush Limbaugh on his Tuesday radio show, conservative commentator Mark Steyn pointed to a contrast in the different approach President Barack Obama went through to free U.S. Army Sgt. Beau Bergdahl from the Taliban versus the two decapitated journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley from ISIS. “There’s been these stories, actually I think it was broken by an old colleague of mine – Toby Harnden from The Daily Telegraph in London. I think he’s with ...

Obamacare Won't Be Repealed Until At Least 2017, Koch-Backed Group Privately Admits

Sep 2 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- It's no secret that Republicans are finding Obamacare less useful as a political cudgel in the midterm elections than they'd hoped. The health care law is mentioned less and less frequently in attack ads. Fewer Republican candidates are discussing it on the stump. And a consensus has taken hold that the GOP's biggest mistake this cycle was shutting down the government in an effort to repeal it. But does that mean that the ...

Why Obama Should Ask Congress for an ISIS AUMF

Sep 2 2014 1:06pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama and his national security advisers have some serious thinking to do over the next week on the scope, duration and lethality of U.S. military action against the organization calling itself the Islamic State. To date, the president has relied upon the Article II powers that are granted to his office by the U.S. Constitution, such as the ability of the Commander-in-Chief to take limited ...
