Obama says no decision made on Syria

Aug 28 2013, 9:30pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Aug 29 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Wednesday said that he has not made a decision about how to respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria's internal conflict, media reported.

Washington, Aug 29 — US President Barack Obama Wednesday said that he has not made a decision about how to respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria's internal conflict, media reported.

"I have not made a decision," the president said in an interview with the PBS NewsHour at the White House, reiterating he is weighing options in the wake of the chemical attack in the suburbs of Damascus, capital of Syria, Aug 21, in which 1,300 people were reportedly killed, Xinhua reported.

But he said the international norm against the use of banned weapons needs to be "kept in place".

"We have concluded that the Syrian government in fact carried these out, and if that's so, then there need to be international consequences," he added. "I have no interest in any kind of open- ended conflict in Syria."

US House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner Wednesday joined some of his peers by sending a letter to Obama, calling on the president to make his case for launching military strikes on Syria in response to the gas attack.

The top lawmaker demanded that Obama "make the case to the American people and Congress for how potential military action will secure American national security interests, preserve America's credibility, deter the future use of chemical weapons, and, critically, be a part of our broader policy and strategy".

"I think it's important that if, we make a choice to have repercussions for the use of chemical weapons, then the (Bashar al-Assad) Assad regime, which is involved in a civil war, trying to protect itself, will have received a pretty strong signal, that in fact, it better not do it again," Obama said.

Obama pledged a "limited, tailored approach" that will not draw the United States into the conflict, saying direct military engagement "would not help the situation on the ground."

US media reported that the military strikes under consideration will hit targets inside Syria, involving sea-launched cruise missiles or possibly long-range bombers.

Administration officials said the options aim not at toppling the Syrian government led by al-Assad, but rather a direct response to the use of sarin gas last week.

The Syrian government and opposition, engaged in conflict since March 2011, have been blaming each other for the alleged use of the chemical weapons.

An assessment on Syrian government's culpability is expected to be released by the American intelligence later this week.

Several hours after Speaker John Boehner announced to colleagues in the Capitol that the GOP border bill wouldn't address President Obama's threats to unilaterally grant amnesty to as many as 6 million people, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) was befuddled. “I'm utterly baffled by the unwillingness of Republicans to see the danger that has so explicitly been stated out there by the president,” Sessions told reporters. “Institutionally, Congress ca ...

Obama Won't Legalize Pot Just Because The New York Times Told Him

Jul 29 2014 7:09pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The White House has responded to New York Times editorials this week supporting marijuana legalization, saying ending U.S. pot prohibition isn't the "silver bullet solution." The Office of National Drug Control Policy staff, while acknowledging the criminal justice system needs reform, argues in a blog post published Monday night that a series of Times editorials that began Sunday "ignores the science" and "fails to address public h ...

Republicans: Stop sitting on your hands

Jul 29 2014 6:57pm CDT | Source: WND

America is in crisis. Even worse, the world is on fire. Meanwhile, Barack Obama is pouring gasoline on the flames. And what are Republicans in Congress doing about it? Not much. Do they realize there is a midterm election coming up in just over three months? Do they think they are seizing on the opportunity to increase their control of the House and seize the Senate through a business-as-usual stance? Do they think they’re playing it safe? Do they not realize they have a chance of greatly ...

Dethroning Tennessee's tax king

Jul 29 2014 6:51pm CDT | Source: WND

Tennessee’s Aug 7 Senate primary race is much more than a We the People candidate versus the establishment incumbent. The race is an opportunity for conservative state Rep. Joe Carr to dethrone Tennessee’s incumbent RINO tax king, Sen. Lamar Alexander. Joe Carr, left, and Lamar Alexander Lamar Alexander’s voting record shows that over 62 percent of the time he voted with Barack Obama, “more frequently than any other Republican senator from the South.” The fiscal cliff tax-hike bill that r ...

Bobby Jindal Is Being Sued By His Own School Board Over The Common Core

Jul 29 2014 6:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For the last four years, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) has championed the set of learning benchmarks known as the Common Core State Standards -- but a simmering mess of litigation in the state's court system shows that Jindal has moved as far away from his previous position as he can. Last week, a group of parents, teachers and charter school managers sued Jindal over his recent repudiation of the Common Core. Jindal's decision to cut ties with certain te ...
