US intelligence budget surges after 9/11: Report

Aug 30 2013, 4:06am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Aug 30 (IANS) The US secret intelligence budget has gone up greatly since the 9/11 terrorist attack more than a decade ago, a media report said.

Washington, Aug 30 — The US secret intelligence budget has gone up greatly since the 9/11 terrorist attack more than a decade ago, a media report said.

The reason behind this is the aggressive new efforts made to hack into foreign computer networks, the Washington Post reported Thursday citing new documents revealed by former defence contractor Edward Snowden.

The newspaper said the US spy agencies have built "an intelligence-gathering colossus" since the attacks of Sep 11, 2001, but remained unable to provide critical information to the US president on a range of national security threats, Xinhua reported.

The "black budget" for the fiscal year 2013, for instance, totalled $52.6 billion, about twice the estimated size of the 2001 budget and 25 percent above that of 2006.

According to a 178-page budget summary for the National Intelligence Programme, the US intelligence community consists of 16 spy agencies with 107,035 employees.

Spending by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has grown up to $14.7 billion in 2013, more than any other spy agency and nearly 50 percent above that of the National Security Agency (NSA), which has been under fire at home and abroad for secret spying programmes revealed by Snowden.

In a response to inquiries from the Washington Post, US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper admitted the US has made "a considerable investment in the Intelligence Community" since the terrorist attacks of Sep 11, 2001.

The documents also showed that both the CIA and NSA have launched new "offensive cyber operations" to hack into foreign computer networks to steal information or sabotage enemy systems.

Among the many revelations in the new documentary on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is that contrary to what the U.S. government would like the public to believe about those who reveal government secrets, his life in exile is pretty good. Snowden, currently living in Moscow, was joined there in June by his girlfriend Lindsay Mills, The Intercept reports. 'Citizenfour', the new film by Laura Poitras that premiered Friday evening at the New York Film Festival, gives ...

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden reached out to Laura Poitras in January 2013, the documentary filmmaker knew just what to do: make a documentary. She had recently won a MacArthur genius grant in 2012 and was already several years into making a film about surveillance in the post-9/11 era when Snowden reached out to her using the name "Citizen Four." When she and Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong in June 2013, she brought her came ...

Silicon Valley Tech Giants Say US Spying May Bust-Up the Internet

Oct 9 2014 9:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Since there is nothing more self-righteous than an addict who just got out of rehab, it was not surprising that Microsoft’s General Counsel Brad Smith at a Silicon Valley panel discussion on NSA surveillance would say, “You own your data. And the government needs to start respecting that.”  Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Apple have made big bucks selling other people's Internet data to marketers and the federal government. But now that customers are rebelling, Microsoft a ...

Barack Obama's 10 most outrageous lies

Oct 8 2014 6:40pm CDT | Source: WND

In my new book, “You Lie: The Evasions, Omissions, Fabrications, Frauds, and Outright Falsehoods of Barack Obama,” I set out to document Obama’s lies. So many are they I ended up writing a history of his presidency. Here are just 10 out of many. 10. “We’ve got shovel-ready projects all across the country.” Most of that shoveling was going on in the Oval Office, but, hey, Obama sold nearly a trillion dollars worth of pork on the back of this bad boy. 9. “I didn’t set ...

While the political commentators in the nation’s capital are wrapped up in the debate over what to do about ISIS, and as one-third of the Senate and nearly all members of the House campaign for re-election, the president’s spies continue to capture massive amounts of personal information about hundreds of millions of us and lie about it. The president continues to dispatch his National Security Agency spies as if he were a law unto hims ...

National Security Entrepreneurs Create Cyber Insurance

Oct 8 2014 11:38am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

At the Government Accountability Project (GAP), we began working with whistleblowers in the wake of Washington's Watergate scandal, an episode that showed what our public officials were capable of when left to their own devices. In the years since then, as the U.S. adopted sweeping privatization and deregulation policies, GAP has come to provide legal help to whistleblowers from both public agencies and private firms. When the first whistleblowers ...
