Australia's foreign minister calls Assad a thug

Aug 31 2013, 9:42am CDT | by IANS

Canberra, Aug 31 (IANS) Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has described Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "a thug and a murderer" while justifying US military strike against his regime for the alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians, media reported Saturday.

Canberra, Aug 31 — Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has described Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "a thug and a murderer" while justifying US military strike against his regime for the alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians, media reported Saturday.

"What leader other than a thug and a murderer can approve that sort of assault on children?" ABC News reported Carr as saying.

With Australia assuming presidency of the UN Security Council Sunday, Senator Carr said the Syrian regime "deserves a response" from the international community for using chemical weapons to kill hundreds of innocent people.

He, however, said he did not think Australia would need to make a contribution to the US response to the crisis.

The minister added that Australian intelligence figures showed that it was "highly likely" that the Syrian regime committed the attack against civilians.

Carr said Australia was prepared to support the US but he did not anticipate making a commitment.

"We think that if a government in this day and age uses chemical weapons against innocent men, women and children, it deserves a response. We're confident the (Barack) Obama administration has weighed carefully what that response will be," he said.

"Given what America has said, there will be no boots on the ground, no commitment to a long campaign.

Expressing support for the US strike, Carr said the response would be swift and narrow.

"This isn't about changing the regime in Syria, it's not about aligning America with the rebels. It's going to be a swift and narrow response.

"Because America is reinforcing here an international norm, that is a view that a nation that gasses its own people with chemical weapons should receive a robust and appropriate response from the world community," he said.

Whack-A-Mole: Our Strategy for Permanent War

Sep 29 2014 8:50am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

After Barack Obama announced his high-risk military campaign in the Middle East, some commentators raised the question of why - given the decade of quagmire in Afghanistan and Iraq - was there no exit strategy? The answer by now is obvious: there will be no exit. The President says that we will defeat Islam in Iraq and Syria in three years. Active military people are less specific: "long time...extended conflict...as long as it takes..." Retired ...

Sep 27 2014 6:04pm CDT | Source: WND

President Obama and Turkish President Erdogan WASHINGTON – There has been mounting concern over the lack of participation by Turkey – a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – in the U.S.-led coalition to attack ISIS, but the reason for holding back has become more apparent. At first, Turkey did not take action because ISIS, which now calls itself the Islamic State, was holding hostage 49 its diplomats who ...

Obama's Propagandistic UN Address

Sep 27 2014 10:29am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

During President Barack Obama's first term, he generally was careful in making comments about world affairs – not that he was always completely honest but he was circumspect about outright lying. Over the past two years, however, he appears to have lost any such inhibitions. That's the case even when he is engaged in something as serious as addressing the United Nations General Assembly on issues of war or peace as occurred both last year and t ...

Khorasan, The Islamic State, and Finding Credible Targets in Syria

Sep 26 2014 2:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Contrary to the Pentagon briefings on success of the early airstrikes on the Islamic State in Syria -- “We’re going to keep the pressure on them,” said Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby -- my Arab sources indicate the attacks have produced light casualties and negligible damage.    The claims by the Kuwait New Agency (KUNA) of “at least 400 militants” killed in the first night of the attacks are wildly exaggerated and suggest deliberate misinformation, ...

CANBERRA -- There is a long history of misconceived and over-reaching foreign military intervention in the Middle East, and it is to be hoped that U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to wage war against the Islamic State will not prove to be another.
