Arab call for UN action gives legitimacy to US strike: analysts

Sep 2 2013, 8:42am CDT | by IANS

Cairo, Sep 2 (IANS) The Arab foreign ministers' call on Sunday for UN action against Damascus provides legitimacy for the US administration to press ahead with its plan to strike Syria for an alleged chemical attack, analysts said.

Cairo, Sep 2 — The Arab foreign ministers' call on Sunday for UN action against Damascus provides legitimacy for the US administration to press ahead with its plan to strike Syria for an alleged chemical attack, analysts said.

"The Arab League's decision is a legitimate cover for more violence in Syria," Yousri el-Azabawi, a political expert at the Al- Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo, told Xinhua.

The resolution dubbed the situation in Syria as "dangerous" and urged the UN to take deterrent action to put an end to the "genocide crimes" committed by the Syrian government led by Bashar al- Assad in the past two years.

"Unfortunately, the Arabs presented a pretext for a war on Syria amid unreal justifications, just like what happened in Iraq in 2003 in the name of fighting terrorism and eliminating weapons of mass destruction, which proved to be false allegations," Azabawi said.

The Syrian government was smart in asking a UN team to probe the use of the chemical weapons but this step provoked some Arab countries to press for a resolution before the international inspectors send their report, he explained.

"The Syrian people will be the only losers in the escalating violence in the country," Azabawi said, adding that the Arab countries should pay more attention to the civilians instead of the governments.

"The Arab decision came in the favor of the U.S. administration which is waiting for a congressional approval to strike Syria," Azabawi added.

On Saturday, US President Barack Obama said he had decided the US should strike Syrian government targets in response to the Aug 21 chemical weapons attack, while adding that he would seek congressional approval for any military action.

Gamal Salama, a professor of political science at Suez University, said the Arab resolution gives a boost to Obama's decision for military intervention.

He added that Arab citizens will not oppose military action against Syria due to their own domestic problems and media mobilisation against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

ISIS, Turkey's tool for re-establishing caliphate

Sep 22 2014 7:24pm CDT | Source: WND

WASHINGTON – The release by ISIS of 49 Turkish diplomats under mysterious circumstances raises further concern that Ankara’s cooperation with the jihadist army could be part of a quiet plan to re-establish the Ottoman Empire, according to some Middle East experts, according to Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin. Ankara already has allowed ISIS jihadist fighters to enter Syria, launder millions of dollars a day and sell oil taken from occupied Iraq. Turkey said that through “diplomacy” and ...

Alleged ISIS Photo Controversy Engulfs Sen. John McCain

Sep 18 2014 10:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and his aides swear the Syrian “rebels” he was pictured last year with weren’t ISIS members or supporters, and the mainstream media is by and large buying the 2008 GOP presidential nominee’s story.  Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has endured brutal criticism—media fact checkers, reporters, and political figures have shredded him—for questioning just who McCain posed with. But a closer look at the situation tells perhaps a different story than McCain’s office or the m ...

Obama Has No ISIS Strategy

Sep 16 2014 10:56am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Obama said a week ago he did not have a strategy to combat ISIS, and that now he does. He was right the first time. Oh, History The United States ignored ISIS for months. Then out of nowhere a complex situation morphed into a struggle to save the Yazidis from so-called genocide, requiring special forces and air strikes. The Yazidis disappeared from view, perhaps saved, certainly no longer needed as an emotional excuse to re-enter a war we had been told ended ...

Confident From Syria, Hizballah Considering Attacking Israel

Hizballah plans to dispatch scores of terrorists into Israel while striking civilian communities with missiles in a future war that could last months, a senior Israeli source told reporters. The terrorist organization's confidence grew, based on experience gained from its military intervention in Syria on behalf of dictator Bashar al-Assad. That, the Israeli military official believes, has the group considering going on the offensive. A pre-emptive Isr ...

Get Out! - The Only Sane Response to the Islamic State

Sep 14 2014 8:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Islamic State (ISIS) proves the law of unintended consequences. Congratulations America! We killed Christianity in the Middle East and unleashed a terror organization with far greater reach and power than Al Qaeda ever possessed. If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results, then our foreign policy needs to have been locked away in an institution a long, long time ago. The law of unintended consequence ...
