Americans oppose military strike against Syria: Poll

Sep 3 2013, 11:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 4 (IANS) The majority of Americans still oppose launching military strikes against Syria, even as the Barack Obama administration is trying hard to secure support from lawmakers, says an ABC News-Washington Post poll.

Washington, Sep 4 — The majority of Americans still oppose launching military strikes against Syria, even as the Barack Obama administration is trying hard to secure support from lawmakers, says an ABC News-Washington Post poll.

The poll found that 59 percent of Americans are against a missile strike in Syria in light of the US government's determination that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons against its own people, Xinhua reported.

Only 36 percent of Americans support the kind of military action for what the Obama administration is now seeking Congressional authorisation.

The opposition against such military actions in Syria has been observed across the board.

A total of 54 percent of Democrats, 55 percent of Republicans and 66 percent of political independents say "No" to the US government launching missile strikes against Syrian government, showing deep opposition among every political group.

Americans would express more support for the military actions if Britain and France were to participate, with the support for missile strikes in Syria rising by 10 percentage points to 46 percent.

But the prospect has become less likely after the British parliament voted down a proposal for military intervention in Syria last week.

The US public showed even less support for America and its allies supplying weapons to opposition groups in Syria, with 70 percent opposing such an action and only 27 percent supporting.

The poll was conducted by telephone Aug 28-Sep 1 among 1,012 adults.

The White House is currently trying to win over lawmakers to support military strikes against Syria. Obama Tuesday met Congressional leaders and Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel appeared at a Senate hearing to make the case for military actions.

GOP's Terri Lynn Land Gains Momentum in Michigan Sen Race with 'Michigan First' Message

Sep 2 2014 11:05pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A perfect storm is brewing in Michigan that may propel a Republican into the U.S. Senate seat Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), a Democrat, has held since 1979. Terri Lynn Land, Michigan’s ex-Secretary of State and a Republican National Committeewoman, is running her U.S. Senate campaign on an aggressive conservative populist message that seems more fit for red state Republicans than a Republican running in a bluish-purple state like Michigan.  A national mood against President Barack Obama i ...

In response to Obama is the man who doesn't WANT to have a plan: Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron strongly condemned ISIS, calling their latest atrocity - the beheading of journalist Steven Sotloff -   ‘an absolutely disgusting and despicable act’. Obama and Joel Osteen

Sep 2 2014 6:30pm CDT | Source: WND

“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” – Proverbs 29:18 I can’t blame Barack Obama for the sad state of America. Yes, he lied about what Obamacare was all about. Yes, he deceived about who he was and being constitutionally eligible for the office. Yes, he has broken both the spirit and the letter of the law while acting – and I do mean acting – as president of the United States. Nevertheless, Obama is ...
