Americans oppose military strike against Syria: Poll

Sep 3 2013, 11:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 4 (IANS) The majority of Americans still oppose launching military strikes against Syria, even as the Barack Obama administration is trying hard to secure support from lawmakers, says an ABC News-Washington Post poll.

Washington, Sep 4 — The majority of Americans still oppose launching military strikes against Syria, even as the Barack Obama administration is trying hard to secure support from lawmakers, says an ABC News-Washington Post poll.

The poll found that 59 percent of Americans are against a missile strike in Syria in light of the US government's determination that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons against its own people, Xinhua reported.

Only 36 percent of Americans support the kind of military action for what the Obama administration is now seeking Congressional authorisation.

The opposition against such military actions in Syria has been observed across the board.

A total of 54 percent of Democrats, 55 percent of Republicans and 66 percent of political independents say "No" to the US government launching missile strikes against Syrian government, showing deep opposition among every political group.

Americans would express more support for the military actions if Britain and France were to participate, with the support for missile strikes in Syria rising by 10 percentage points to 46 percent.

But the prospect has become less likely after the British parliament voted down a proposal for military intervention in Syria last week.

The US public showed even less support for America and its allies supplying weapons to opposition groups in Syria, with 70 percent opposing such an action and only 27 percent supporting.

The poll was conducted by telephone Aug 28-Sep 1 among 1,012 adults.

The White House is currently trying to win over lawmakers to support military strikes against Syria. Obama Tuesday met Congressional leaders and Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel appeared at a Senate hearing to make the case for military actions.

Aug 21 2014 10:53am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A tight race for one of North Carolina's Senate seats is turning into a veritable battle of the sexes, with a huge and growing gulf between male and female voters. A new Suffolk University/USA Today poll shows that Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) is leading her challenger, State House Speaker Thom Tillis (R), by 18 points among women voters. But Tillis leads by 14 points among men, adding up to a whopping 32-point gender gap in the race -- significantly wider than the 20-point gend ...

How Campbell Brown's Education Reform Group Will Anger Republicans

Aug 21 2014 10:02am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Republicans no doubt cheered when the Vergara v. California decision was handed down, axing teacher tenure. And they'll no doubt be pleased by former CNN Anchor Campbell Brown's attack on teacher tenure, with her education reform group called the "Partnership for Educational Justice." But Brown's education reform group, which uses "equality in education" as its mantra to justify getting rid of teacher tenure, ...

Health insurance premiums are going to skyrocket under Obamacare next year, maybe even double! No, wait -- they're only increasing a little, and less than before Obamacare! No, wait -- they're … decreasing in some places? The crucial question about the second year of enrollment on the Affordable Care Act's health insurance exchanges is: How much will coverage cost? Actual prices won't be available in most states un ...

Joe Scarborough Shills: Obama Golfing Sends 'Screw You' Message to Terrorists

Aug 21 2014 8:57am CDT | Source: Big Government

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough suggested that President Obama went golfing after his angry speech against Islamic State for beheading American journalist James Foley just to send a message to terrorists. On Morning Joe Thursday, Scarborough said terrorists would likely view Obama as “one cold bastard” for golfing in spite of their attempt to disrupt American life. “They are negotiating with Spock with a pitching wedge here,” Scarborough said, referring to New York Tim ...

James Foley's Death Isn't Changing Views In Congress

Aug 21 2014 8:49am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — For all its horror, the beheading of an American journalist in Syria appears unlikely to change lawmakers' minds about military intervention against Islamic State extremists. It's equally unclear whether the Obama administration will be asking them to back a new U.S. approach. President Barack Obama said the United States wouldn't scale back its military posture in Iraq in response to James Foley's kil ...

Immigration Reform: Go Incrementally, Mr. Obama, and Go Before November

Aug 21 2014 8:36am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Reform of our immigration system, long described as "broken" by Democrats and Republicans alike, has been on the docket forever. Campaigning to get to the White House, candidate Barack Obama not only promised but guaranteed immigration reform in his first year in office. That guarantee has not been delivered on, not in President Obama's first term, even with a Democratic-controlled Congress, because of the Presi ...

Tantaros: You Solve Radical Islam ‘With a Bullet to the Head’

Aug 21 2014 8:13am CDT | Source: Big Government

Fox News Channel host Andrea Tantaros ripped President Barack Obama’s handling of ISIS and other radical Islamic groups on Wednesday’s “Outnumbered.”   “The only proper response, I think, Sandra, is for the president in about 45 minutes, to approach that podium and admit, not just that he was wrong, but that we're going in there and we’re gonna flatten them. Last night we should have taken out 10,000 ISIS fighters, warned them, last night, not tod ...

Aug 21 2014 8:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is considering key changes in the nation's immigration system requested by tech, industry and powerful interest groups, in a move that could blunt Republicans' election-year criticism of the president's go-it-alone approach to immigration.
