Washington, Sep 6 — A leading Indian American lawyer, Sunil R. Kulkarni, has become the first South Asian American state judge in Northern California with his appointment to Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Palo Alto, California, resident Kulkarni, 41 who since 2011 has served as a senior counsel in the litigation group at the University of California, was named to the new post by California governor, Jerry Brown, last week local ethnic newspaper India-West reported.

Indian American Paul Singh Grewal in 2010 was appointed a magistrate judge, a federal post, in US District Court for the Northern District of California, according to the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California.

Born in Los Angeles, Kulkarni grew up in King City, California, in southern Monterey County. He has a BS from University of California-Berkeley and a law degree from the University of California's Hastings College of the Law.

The Indian American attorney was a law clerk for Judge Oliver W. Wagner in the US District Court for the Eastern District of California from 1996-97 and held various positions at Morrison and Foerster LLP from 1998-2011, including partner and associate.

There has been a flurry of recent appointments and nominations of South Asians to the judiciary in California.

They include Rupa S. Goswami, who was appointed by Brown to Los Angeles County Superior Court; Alka Sagar, who was named a federal magistrate judge for the Central District of California; and Vince Girdhari Chhabria, who was nominated by President Barack Obama to the US District Court for Northern California.

According to the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California, Sagar became the first South Asian woman to serve as a federal judge in the Central District and the first South Asian woman federal judge west of the Mississippi.

Not So Fast: Stock Market Fall Will End 'California Comeback'--Laffer

Oct 22 2014 6:43am CDT | Source: Big Government

Arthur Laffer made his name as the USC professor who helped give credibility to the Reagan Administration’s supply-side economics, based on the idea that higher tax rates inadvertently result in lower taxes collected.  But California Governor Jerry Brown’s recent State of the State address claimed raising taxes to the highest level of any state in the nation has led to what Brown calls the “California Comeback.” Laffer has taken to the opinion page of the Orange County Register week t ...

Is Our Democracy for Sale? Maybe Not and Here's Some Proof

Oct 21 2014 10:26am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Most people would agree that far too much money is spent on political campaigns in this country. Since the Supreme Court's decision on Citizens United in 2010, so much money has flooded into political campaigns it appears as though our democratic process is entirely for sale. And if rich people in the US are able to buy any political office they want, is there even a point in voting anymore? ...

Why would any man vote Democrat?

Oct 20 2014 6:14pm CDT | Source: WND

By Gordon E. Finley, Ph.D., and Dianna Thompson The most presciently under-appreciated and intentionally ignored book in gender politics was published by David Paul Kuhn in 2007 and titled “The Neglected Voter: White Men and The Democratic Dilemma.” The message is in the title. White men have fled the Democratic Party in droves, for good reason – and why shouldn’t they continue to flee in 2014,— whil ...

Frank Oliveira says that he and a group of Central Valley farmers who oppose Gov. Think The Wendy Davis Ad Went Too Far? Watch This.

Oct 14 2014 10:19am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Apparently it's "Hail Mary" time in the 2014 election cycle. Less than one week after Wendy Davis (D) shook up the Texas gubernatorial race with a controversial wheelchair ad against Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), who is partially paralyzed, another candidate for governor is making a similarly risky play. Neel Kashkari, the Republican former George W. Bush Treasury official who is currently running 20 points behind California ...

Kashkari, Drowning in Polls, 'Saves' Boy from Drowning in TV Ad

Oct 13 2014 4:27pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Republican gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari, who is lagging behind incumbent Democrat Jerry Brown by double digits, has taken a rather significant risk in his latest television ad, which portrays a child drowning in a swimming pool. Kashkari enters to rescue the child, whose plight is meant to be a metaphor for children stuck in California's failing public schools. As the child recovers, head bowed, Kashkari touts his education policy. The ad is what strateg ...
