Washington, Sep 6 — A leading Indian American lawyer, Sunil R. Kulkarni, has become the first South Asian American state judge in Northern California with his appointment to Santa Clara County Superior Court.

Palo Alto, California, resident Kulkarni, 41 who since 2011 has served as a senior counsel in the litigation group at the University of California, was named to the new post by California governor, Jerry Brown, last week local ethnic newspaper India-West reported.

Indian American Paul Singh Grewal in 2010 was appointed a magistrate judge, a federal post, in US District Court for the Northern District of California, according to the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California.

Born in Los Angeles, Kulkarni grew up in King City, California, in southern Monterey County. He has a BS from University of California-Berkeley and a law degree from the University of California's Hastings College of the Law.

The Indian American attorney was a law clerk for Judge Oliver W. Wagner in the US District Court for the Eastern District of California from 1996-97 and held various positions at Morrison and Foerster LLP from 1998-2011, including partner and associate.

There has been a flurry of recent appointments and nominations of South Asians to the judiciary in California.

They include Rupa S. Goswami, who was appointed by Brown to Los Angeles County Superior Court; Alka Sagar, who was named a federal magistrate judge for the Central District of California; and Vince Girdhari Chhabria, who was nominated by President Barack Obama to the US District Court for Northern California.

According to the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California, Sagar became the first South Asian woman to serve as a federal judge in the Central District and the first South Asian woman federal judge west of the Mississippi.

Nov 4 2014 11:48pm CST | Source: Big Government

Jerry Brown won an unprecedented fourth term as California Governor defeating Republican Neel Kashkari, a former George W. CA School Superintendent Race Is State's Most Expensive

Nov 4 2014 12:39pm CST | Source: Big Government

An inner split within the Democratic Party has gone public, as the race for the post of California state superintendent of public instruction is pitting labor groups, notably the nations’ teachers’ unions, against education-reform supporters.  Tom Torlakson, the current superintendent, opposes the Vergara decision that ruled California’s teacher tenure and seniority laws as unconstitutional, thus eliciting support from the California Teachers Association an ...

More guerilla political street art in California has appeared. Poster art making fun of Governor Jerry Brown appeared in Los Angeles on utility boxes and cables near Paramount Studios, the Hollywood Bowl, and Venice Beach.  The posters, showing Brown’s face in a toilet bowl, say: “If it’s Brown, flush it down.” Brown is running for re-election against Republican Neel Kashkari on Tuesday. California Grassroots Groups 'Unveil' Common Core's Unanswered Questions

Nov 3 2014 7:25am CST | Source: Big Government

DALLAS, TX -- Across California, grassroots groups have come together to address growing concerns with the Common Core State Standards. The state adopted them in 2010. The 2013-14 school year served as a trial run for the implementation of the nationwide standards and testing. This year, it all became official. Breitbart News reported that in April "Unveiling Common Core" blitzed through the Golden Sta ...

Obama gets no credit for U.S. Marine's release

Nov 2 2014 2:59pm CST | Source: WND

What would it be like to serve two heroic tours of duty for a country that was unwilling to defend you? What would it be like to sit naked and constrained, innocently suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, alone in a Mexican prison cell while your commander in chief golfed and luxed with Hollywood stars and hip-hop rappers? Countless people could take credit for Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi’s release Friday from a Mexican prison. H ...

Jerry Brown's Real Agenda: Slow Growth for California

Nov 2 2014 7:32am CST | Source: Big Government

Yet he does have an agenda, one pointed out by Samantha Gallegos of the Capitol Weekly: keeping California's economic growth slow, urging residents to live in more densely-packed cities, and spending more cash on p ...
