Syria won't be another Iraq or Afghanistan: Obama

Sep 7 2013, 10:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 7 (IANS) Finding few takers at home and abroad for punitive military strikes against Syria, President Barack Obama today sought to assure war weary Americans that an intervention would not be like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Washington, Sep 7 — Finding few takers at home and abroad for punitive military strikes against Syria, President Barack Obama today sought to assure war weary Americans that an intervention would not be like Iraq and Afghanistan.

"What we're talking about is not an open-ended intervention. This would not be another Iraq or Afghanistan," Obama said in his weekly address Saturday making a case for limited and targeted military action against the Assad regime for its alleged use of chemical weapons.

"I know that the American people are weary after a decade of war, even as the war in Iraq has ended, and the war in Afghanistan is winding down. That's why we're not putting our troops in the middle of somebody else's war," he said.

Obama spoke as his aides made frantic efforts to muster popular support and win over lawmakers from both his own Democratic and opposition Republicans opposed to Obama's plan, making Congressional approval fairly uncertain.

Asserting that the alleged use of sarin gas by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime was a threat to US national security, as well as an affront to international law, Obama said failing to respond to such actions poses a "serious threat to our" national security.

"Failing to respond to this outrageous attack would increase the risk that chemical weapons could be used again," he said.

They "would fall into the hands of terrorists who might use them against us, and it would send a horrible signal to other nations that there would be no consequences for their use of these weapons," Obama said. "All of which would pose a serious threat to our national security."

Without saying whether or not congressional approval was necessary to begin strikes in Syria, Obama stressed Saturday that any action would be more effective if "we act together".

"We are the United States of America," he said. "We cannot turn a blind eye to images like the ones we've seen out of Syria."

Many lawmakers are saying their constituents are overwhelmingly against US action in Syria. Public opinion polls show more Americans oppose military strikes than support them.

Obamacare Won't Be Repealed Until At Least 2017, Koch-Backed Group Privately Admits

Sep 2 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- It's no secret that Republicans are finding Obamacare less useful as a political cudgel in the midterm elections than they'd hoped. The health care law is mentioned less and less frequently in attack ads. Fewer Republican candidates are discussing it on the stump. And a consensus has taken hold that the GOP's biggest mistake this cycle was shutting down the government in an effort to repeal it. But doe ...

Why Obama Should Ask Congress for an ISIS AUMF

Sep 2 2014 1:06pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama and his national security advisers have some serious thinking to do over the next week on the scope, duration and lethality of U.S. military action against the organization calling itself the Islamic State. To date, the president has relied upon the Article II powers that are granted to his office by the U.S. Constitution, such as the ability of the Commander-in-Chief to take limited mil ...

Sep 2 2014 12:50pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The AFL-CIO wants President Barack Obama to give "affirmative action" to illegal immigrants who are in the shadows and to go "bold" on executive amnesty.  At a Christian Science Monitor breakfast last week, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka reportedly said that he hoped Obama enacts executive amnesty that is "bold enough to be worthwhile." When he was asked "what the labor movement would consider to be bold action on immigration," Trumka reportedly ...

The violent terrorist group that calls itself the Islamic State is eliciting fear from all corners of the world after its brutal advances through Iraq this summer, including the slaughter ofreligious minorities and soldiers and the video-recorded beheading of an American journalist. How the United States should respond has been a ripe topic for pundits and politicians, with many dogging President Barack Obama for saying "we don’t have a strategy yet" to deal with the t ...

The Left's Privacy Hypocrisy

Sep 2 2014 11:55am CDT | Source: Big Government

Over the weekend, a hacker posted nude photos of actresses including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Ariana Grande, Mila Kunis, Scarlett Johansson, Lea Michele, Christina Aguilera, and Kirsten Dunst, among others. This prompted rightful anger on all sides of the aisle, as well as an FBI investigation. Then, comedian Ricky Gervais suggested that perhaps the best way to avoid hacked photos of your naughty bits being distributed on the internet would be f ...

Just days after an internal report found that the Republican Party is alienating women voters by opposing equal pay laws, the party attempted to reverse that trend in a tweet. "This #LaborDay, the White House & Democrats believe paying women less than men is an acceptable practice," the Republican National Committee tweeted. "All Republicans support equal pay." This #LaborDay, the White House & De ...

The Incredible Shrinking Presidency

Sep 2 2014 11:18am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I have now received roughly five hundred emails soliciting DNCC and DNC money, circa ten a day for several months. Please stop it. The names of senders are immaterial, since no one would ever believe that anything other than a bot originates this torrent. Why? With more than two years of his presidency remaining and less than 3 months before a decisive mid-term election, this has become the incredible shr ...
