Syria won't be another Iraq or Afghanistan: Obama

Sep 7 2013, 10:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 7 (IANS) Finding few takers at home and abroad for punitive military strikes against Syria, President Barack Obama today sought to assure war weary Americans that an intervention would not be like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Washington, Sep 7 — Finding few takers at home and abroad for punitive military strikes against Syria, President Barack Obama today sought to assure war weary Americans that an intervention would not be like Iraq and Afghanistan.

"What we're talking about is not an open-ended intervention. This would not be another Iraq or Afghanistan," Obama said in his weekly address Saturday making a case for limited and targeted military action against the Assad regime for its alleged use of chemical weapons.

"I know that the American people are weary after a decade of war, even as the war in Iraq has ended, and the war in Afghanistan is winding down. That's why we're not putting our troops in the middle of somebody else's war," he said.

Obama spoke as his aides made frantic efforts to muster popular support and win over lawmakers from both his own Democratic and opposition Republicans opposed to Obama's plan, making Congressional approval fairly uncertain.

Asserting that the alleged use of sarin gas by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime was a threat to US national security, as well as an affront to international law, Obama said failing to respond to such actions poses a "serious threat to our" national security.

"Failing to respond to this outrageous attack would increase the risk that chemical weapons could be used again," he said.

They "would fall into the hands of terrorists who might use them against us, and it would send a horrible signal to other nations that there would be no consequences for their use of these weapons," Obama said. "All of which would pose a serious threat to our national security."

Without saying whether or not congressional approval was necessary to begin strikes in Syria, Obama stressed Saturday that any action would be more effective if "we act together".

"We are the United States of America," he said. "We cannot turn a blind eye to images like the ones we've seen out of Syria."

Many lawmakers are saying their constituents are overwhelmingly against US action in Syria. Public opinion polls show more Americans oppose military strikes than support them.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is trying to determine if a second American fighting with the Islamic State group has been killed in Syria. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday that the U.S. has no independent confirmation of reports of a second American killed while fighting with the militant group. Women Don't Think The GOP Cares About Them, Internal Report Confirms

Aug 27 2014 7:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A new internal Republican report confirmed that women are not fans of the GOP, and Republicans have more work to do if they want the female vote. The report, which was obtained by Politico, found that although Republicans have tried to improve outreach to female voters, women still believe the party is "stuck in the past" and "intolerant." Forty-nine percent of women polled for the report looked on ...

Rand Paul: Obama 'Can't Just Do What He Wants. He Is Not a King'

Aug 27 2014 7:17pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Wednesday’s “On the Record” on the Fox News Channel, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) excoriated President Barack Obama for his reported “end-around” of Congress to enact climate change policy. Paul said the act would exceed just an abuse power, but would amount to constitutional crisis. “Not only is it an abuse of power, I think it almost leads us to a constitutional crisis of sorts,” Paul said. “It’s one thing after another. You know, he says he has no choice but to act. He says he has a pen an ...

How Obama aided ISIS

Aug 27 2014 6:54pm CDT | Source: WND

Perhaps the single costliest, most demonstrable crime of Barack Obama’s time in office is what he did to fuel the rise of the army of the Islamic State in Syria, which now threatens to take over Syria, Iraq and other Middle East while murdering thousands and posing an extreme terrorist threat to the U.S. Obama claims not to have seen this coming. But others certainly did. Two years ago, I pointed out that Obama was, in effect, siding “with al-Qaida and ot ...

Black-on-white cop shooting tests media integrity

Aug 27 2014 6:52pm CDT | Source: WND

OK, I know, the phrase “media integrity” may strike the reader as an oxymoron like, say, “postal service.” But the post office, for all its faults, defies the oxymoron by delivering my mail 99 percent of the time. As was evident in Ferguson, Missouri, the major media – CNN most disgracefully – made no effort at all to undo their oxymoronic reputation. Indeed, the word “moronic” does no injustice to the coverage. The shooti ...

Another Ferguson? Oops, wrong race, never mind

Why has there been no media interest in the police shooting of an apparently unarmed suspect in Salt Lake City? Just two days after the shooting death of Michael Brown, an officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old. The Salt Lake City Police Department equips some of its officers with cameras. The department confirmed the officer who shot had a camera and that footage of the con ...
