US Senate releases 'videos' of Syria chemical attack

Sep 7 2013, 10:10pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 8 (IANS) A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

Washington, Sep 8 — A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

The videos, posted by the Senate Intelligence Committee on its website, show graphic images of adults and children convulsing and foaming despite no blood and obvious wounds on their bodies, signs of suffering from a chemical attack, Xinhua reported.

The videos were first played for the members of the committee Thursday at the request of its chairwoman Dianne Feinstein.

The panel said the videos were compiled by the US Open Source Center from footage taken Aug 21 in the suburbs of Damascus.

"All of the videos were posted on YouTube by pro-Syrian opposition users," the committee said in a statement.

"With one exception, all 13 videos were posted by a pro-opposition internet news channel that consistently posts user-created videos concerning the Syrian conflict."

Major US television news networks, including CNN, broadcast the videos Saturday though they admitted that they could not independently verify the authenticity of these videos.

The Obama administration claims that the Syrian government perpetrated the sarin gas attack Aug 21, which the US claims killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.

The videos were released to the public at a time when President Barack Obama and his Democrat allies in Congress are gearing up the campaign to swing the public opinion, which is largely against US involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Obama will conduct a series of interviews with six major US TV networks, which will air them Monday night, ahead of his scheduled televised speech from the White House Tuesday to appeal to the public for support to his plan to launch a limited military strike against Syria.

Are Millionaire-Funded State-Level Initiatives the Next Phase of Gun Control?

Nov 1 2014 1:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

After failing to secure gun control at the Supreme Court, the U.S. Congress, and the vast majority of state legislatures around the country, are millionaire and billionaire-funded state-level initiatives the next phase of gun control? Think about it: Just days after the December 14, 2012, Sandy Hook attack, Democrats began pushing ammunition magazine capacity bans and an "assault weapons" ban that included a ban on numerous shotguns and ot ...

The GOP is proving it's the big tent party thanks in part to a serial killer with a face tattoo who called Lee Terry "the greatest Republican ever." Don Young tried to prove his LGBT bona fides by saying he "hired a person of a different orientation," though that could just mean his LD drives a Prius. And Democratic children will go trick or treating while Republican children will denounce the pr ...

You'll Probably Never Know Why The CIA Spied On The Senate

Oct 31 2014 6:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- When Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) took to the Senate floor earlier this year to allege that the CIA had spied on the U.S. Senate, she confirmed the existence of a secret document. That document, she said, could further validate a scathing report on the spy agency's torture practices that is expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks. The document is known as the "Panetta Review, ...

When It Comes to Torture, Silence Is Bipartisan

Oct 27 2014 8:41am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

Torture politics makes for strange bedfellows. For those of you who think the Obama Administration doesn’t know how to work with Republicans, think again. North Carolina’s Republican Senator, Richard Burr, may soon be one of the Obama Administration’s best friends. Burr, now a member of the Chairman of the Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence, is the presumptive Chairman of the Committee, if as predicted the Republicans take control of the Senate ...

Senate-CIA Dispute Unsettled As Final Investigation Into Torture Report Ends

Oct 23 2014 7:16am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- A Senate Sergeant-at-Arms investigation into a dispute between the CIA and the Senate Intelligence Committee has ended without firm conclusions after failing to examine crucial computer records that investigators said were erased by the agency, sources familiar with the inquiry told The Huffington Post. CIA officials, however, told The Huffington Post that the computer records not only exist, but were provided to Senate investigators, leaving the dispute's fina ...
