US Senate releases 'videos' of Syria chemical attack

Sep 7 2013, 10:10pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 8 (IANS) A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

Washington, Sep 8 — A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

The videos, posted by the Senate Intelligence Committee on its website, show graphic images of adults and children convulsing and foaming despite no blood and obvious wounds on their bodies, signs of suffering from a chemical attack, Xinhua reported.

The videos were first played for the members of the committee Thursday at the request of its chairwoman Dianne Feinstein.

The panel said the videos were compiled by the US Open Source Center from footage taken Aug 21 in the suburbs of Damascus.

"All of the videos were posted on YouTube by pro-Syrian opposition users," the committee said in a statement.

"With one exception, all 13 videos were posted by a pro-opposition internet news channel that consistently posts user-created videos concerning the Syrian conflict."

Major US television news networks, including CNN, broadcast the videos Saturday though they admitted that they could not independently verify the authenticity of these videos.

The Obama administration claims that the Syrian government perpetrated the sarin gas attack Aug 21, which the US claims killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.

The videos were released to the public at a time when President Barack Obama and his Democrat allies in Congress are gearing up the campaign to swing the public opinion, which is largely against US involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Obama will conduct a series of interviews with six major US TV networks, which will air them Monday night, ahead of his scheduled televised speech from the White House Tuesday to appeal to the public for support to his plan to launch a limited military strike against Syria.

Checks and Balances Ensure Transparency on Torture

Sep 16 2014 3:49pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Every September 17, Constitution Day is observed to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. Inherent in the Constitution is the fundamental and inviolable system of "checks and balances" created by the Founding Fathers to prevent the concentration of power in any one branch of government, to check and restrain government, and to protect rights and liberties of citizens. This essential framework of our American government limits official p ...

7 ISIS Facts Every American Should Know

Sep 14 2014 7:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

In January, President Barack Obama dismissed the Islamic State (ISIS) as merely a “JV team.” Last week, Obama reversed that position and told NBC News ISIS is “not a JV team.” Similarly, two weeks ago Obama said the Islamic State can be shrunk to “a manageable problem.” Then on Friday, as NBC News reported, “The Obama administration said for the first time Friday that the United States is ‘at war’ with ISIS mil ...

Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is endorsing Elan Carr in the race for retiring Rep. Henry Waxman's (D-Calif.) congressional seat. In a Monday statement, Romney praised the Republican prosecutor, who is running against Democratic state Sen. Ted Lieu to represent California's 33rd Congressional District. Harry Reid's Senate Is Focused on Citizens United While the World Is Burning

Sep 6 2014 9:36am CDT | Source: Big Government

It has been a long, hot summer here in America and abroad. ISIS is on the march and has brutally beheaded two American journalists. The threat is so large that you even have liberal United States Senators like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Al Franken (D-MN) openly questioning President Barack Obama’s foreign policy. The last time the threat to the homeland was this grave was in the aftermath of September 11th. So, what is first on the policy agenda for ...

Obama is right to hesitate

Sep 4 2014 6:31pm CDT | Source: WND

Give President Obama credit for one thing. He’s accomplished something nobody else could do. In a city long frozen in partisan gridlock, he’s done the impossible. He’s succeeded in getting Democrats and Republicans to agree on something. Unfortunately for him, what they all agree on is that he’s too weak in his response to the growing threat of ISIS. That’s the charge of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who said in an interview on “Meet the Press”: “I think I’ve learn ...

Everybody Has an Opinion

Sep 4 2014 9:44am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It seems like everybody has an opinion on world affairs and what this President should or should not do. Arm chair diplomats seem to be everywhere. In fact, every Tom, Dick and Harry is now an expert on Syria, Iraq, Iran, or the terrorist group -- ISIS. It's truly an amazing phenomenon to witness so much commotion from our elected officials, media personalities or everyday citizens. Some want to declare war; others want to bomb, bomb, and b ...

Obama: The head of the ISIS snake

Sep 3 2014 6:37pm CDT | Source: WND

Last week, I detailed the conflicting signals and statements to which Americans were being exposed by the press and government officials relative to the threat posed by the so-called Islamic State (formerly the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS). This week, the news cycle has been dominated by the Obama administration’s unfathomable lack of resolve with respect to ISIS, particularly the president’s laconic admission last week that the White House did not have a strategy to ...

An unhappy summer for liberty

Sep 3 2014 6:29pm CDT | Source: WND

At the root of the chaos in the Middle East and here at home are governments that respect no limits on their exercise of power. Public officials – who are supposed to be our public servants – routinely behave as if they are our masters. They reject the confines of the Constitution, they don’t believe that our rights are inalienable, and they fail to see the dangerous path down which they are leading us. It is a path to an authoritarian America, predicted ...

Poll: Americans Overwhelmingly Back Military Strike Against ISIS

Sep 1 2014 12:00pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A new poll finds that Americans overwhelmingly support a military strike against the Islamic State terror group in Syria, formerly known as ISIS-- an outcome that is in striking contrast to the indecisiveness of President Barack Obama, who has admitted he has no strategy to date on how to deal with the Islamic State’s terrorism. The latest poll conducted by the organization YouGov finds that, within just one year, public opinion has changed dramatically from steep opposition to ...

We Could Stop Ebola Or We Could Build Half A Baseball Stadium

Aug 27 2014 11:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Ebola isn't entering the United States smuggled in by child refugees. But the rapidly spreading and currently incurable disease has killed hundreds of Africans and showed that it can potentially overcome the one drug that seemed to help. We're currently in the midst of the biggest Ebola outbreak in history--and according to experts like Laurie Garrett, the senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, we need to recognize that it poses a very real ...
