US Senate releases 'videos' of Syria chemical attack

Sep 7 2013, 10:10pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 8 (IANS) A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

Washington, Sep 8 — A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

The videos, posted by the Senate Intelligence Committee on its website, show graphic images of adults and children convulsing and foaming despite no blood and obvious wounds on their bodies, signs of suffering from a chemical attack, Xinhua reported.

The videos were first played for the members of the committee Thursday at the request of its chairwoman Dianne Feinstein.

The panel said the videos were compiled by the US Open Source Center from footage taken Aug 21 in the suburbs of Damascus.

"All of the videos were posted on YouTube by pro-Syrian opposition users," the committee said in a statement.

"With one exception, all 13 videos were posted by a pro-opposition internet news channel that consistently posts user-created videos concerning the Syrian conflict."

Major US television news networks, including CNN, broadcast the videos Saturday though they admitted that they could not independently verify the authenticity of these videos.

The Obama administration claims that the Syrian government perpetrated the sarin gas attack Aug 21, which the US claims killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.

The videos were released to the public at a time when President Barack Obama and his Democrat allies in Congress are gearing up the campaign to swing the public opinion, which is largely against US involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Obama will conduct a series of interviews with six major US TV networks, which will air them Monday night, ahead of his scheduled televised speech from the White House Tuesday to appeal to the public for support to his plan to launch a limited military strike against Syria.

Poll: Americans Overwhelmingly Back Military Strike Against ISIS

Sep 1 2014 12:00pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A new poll finds that Americans overwhelmingly support a military strike against the Islamic State terror group in Syria, formerly known as ISIS-- an outcome that is in striking contrast to the indecisiveness of President Barack Obama, who has admitted he has no strategy to date on how to deal with the Islamic State’s terrorism. The latest poll conducted by the organization YouGov finds that, within just one year, public opinion has changed dramatically from steep opposition to use of mil ...

We Could Stop Ebola Or We Could Build Half A Baseball Stadium

Aug 27 2014 11:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Ebola isn't entering the United States smuggled in by child refugees. But the rapidly spreading and currently incurable disease has killed hundreds of Africans and showed that it can potentially overcome the one drug that seemed to help. We're currently in the midst of the biggest Ebola outbreak in history--and according to experts like Laurie Garrett, the senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, we need to r ...

Water 'Double Standard' Hurts Farmers, Benefits Pelosi's Region

Aug 21 2014 8:16pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Bay area residents may soon lose their prestigious Hetch Hetchy tap water with a recently filed lawsuit addressing severe water restrictions. The restrictions have been put on rural Californians and farmers, but have left elite Bay area residents like Nancy Pelosi exempt from feeling the pain of those same water restrictions. A lawsuit recently filed in federal court by Fresno group CESAR challenges water diversions ...

There May Be More Homeless Kids Than You Think

Aug 18 2014 4:43pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A shift in tracking homeless children may benefit young ones falling through the cracks in the current system. If the Homeless Children and Youth Act, sponsored by Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), passes into law, the Department of Education and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) would be on the same page when it comes to defining homelessness, according to the Newark Advocate. Currently, the Department of Education estimates ...

CIA still unaccountable for multitude of crimes

Aug 12 2014 6:17pm CDT | Source: WND

At long last, after all these years, we have a defining question to We The People on our rule of law from libertarian Jacob G. Hornberger, founder and president of The Future of Freedom Foundation: “Why Not Simply Abolish the CIA?” (fff.org, Aug. 1) He asks: “Did any CIA agent get indicted for torturing people? No. “Did any CIA agent get indicted for destroying the videotapes that showed the torture? No. “Did any CIA agent get indicted for murdering pris ...

From Truth and Reconciliation to Lies and Obfuscation: The Senate RDI Report

Aug 10 2014 9:36pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On a bright spring day in 2005, in a country I cannot name, I entered a drab, unremarkable building, a gateway to a grim, unaccustomed world. Its spaces were impersonal, antiseptic, institutional. The residents of that alien world, both the guards and the guarded, were never exposed to natural light. They inhabited a claustrophobic universe of their own, a place suffused with a permanent air of foreboding, ...

A Bittersweet Ending to The Official Story, Loaded With Learnings for the American People

Aug 8 2014 9:37pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Credit: Mónica Hasenberg via Wikimedia Commons The miraculous finding of the kidnapped-at-birth grandson of the head of a leading Argentine human-rights organization is worthy of noting not just for the closing it brings to this human drama but because it sheds light on the crimes that governments commit in the name of security. And for that reason, valuable lessons can be drawn for many around the world, including the U.S.A. It ...

"Torture," No Longer A Four-Letter Word?

Aug 8 2014 4:46pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

By Laura Pitter Is some sense of sanity finally slipping into the torture debate in the US? Yesterday, after years of criticism for failing to call it by its name, the New York Times finally decided it would use the word “torture” to describe when US interrogators use pain to get detainees to talk.  This follows President Obama’s admission last week that the US “tortured” people as part of the CIA’s post 9/11 detention and interrogation program. When the torture debate last flared after ...

Human Rights Are for All Folks: Security and Liberty

Aug 7 2014 8:14am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This spring, Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Dianne Feinstein, traditionally sympathetic to the intelligence community, accused the CIA of searching and spying on the computers of Senators and their staffers. CIA head John Brennan loudly asserted that "nothing could be further from the truth." After being caught wrong last week, he has crow to eat, as Feinstein's claims are true. Most of the 6,300 page Senate report is still classified, and Senators Feinstein and Le ...

Spying and lying: More grounds for impeachment

Aug 6 2014 6:09pm CDT | Source: WND

In some respects, the recent admission by CIA Director John Brennan that his agents and his lawyers have been spying on the senators whose job it is to monitor the agency should come as no surprise. The agency’s job is to steal and keep secrets, and implicit in those tasks, Brennan would no doubt argue, is lying. Yet in another respect, this may very well be a smoking gun in the now substantial case against President Barack Obama that alleges that much of his official behavior has ma ...
