US Senate releases 'videos' of Syria chemical attack

Sep 7 2013, 10:10pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 8 (IANS) A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

Washington, Sep 8 — A US Senate panel has released 13 videos showing the victims of the alleged chemical attack near Damascus Aug 21, although there was no independent verification of the videos' authenticity, a media report said Sunday.

The videos, posted by the Senate Intelligence Committee on its website, show graphic images of adults and children convulsing and foaming despite no blood and obvious wounds on their bodies, signs of suffering from a chemical attack, Xinhua reported.

The videos were first played for the members of the committee Thursday at the request of its chairwoman Dianne Feinstein.

The panel said the videos were compiled by the US Open Source Center from footage taken Aug 21 in the suburbs of Damascus.

"All of the videos were posted on YouTube by pro-Syrian opposition users," the committee said in a statement.

"With one exception, all 13 videos were posted by a pro-opposition internet news channel that consistently posts user-created videos concerning the Syrian conflict."

Major US television news networks, including CNN, broadcast the videos Saturday though they admitted that they could not independently verify the authenticity of these videos.

The Obama administration claims that the Syrian government perpetrated the sarin gas attack Aug 21, which the US claims killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.

The videos were released to the public at a time when President Barack Obama and his Democrat allies in Congress are gearing up the campaign to swing the public opinion, which is largely against US involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Obama will conduct a series of interviews with six major US TV networks, which will air them Monday night, ahead of his scheduled televised speech from the White House Tuesday to appeal to the public for support to his plan to launch a limited military strike against Syria.

When It Comes to Torture, Silence Is Bipartisan

Oct 27 2014 8:41am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

Torture politics makes for strange bedfellows. For those of you who think the Obama Administration doesn’t know how to work with Republicans, think again. North Carolina’s Republican Senator, Richard Burr, may soon be one of the Obama Administration’s best friends. Burr, now a member of the Chairman of the Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence, is the presumptive Chairman of the Committee, if as predicted the Republicans take control of the Senate. Why will they be friends? It ...

Senate-CIA Dispute Unsettled As Final Investigation Into Torture Report Ends

Oct 23 2014 7:16am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- A Senate Sergeant-at-Arms investigation into a dispute between the CIA and the Senate Intelligence Committee has ended without firm conclusions after failing to examine crucial computer records that investigators said were erased by the agency, sources familiar with the inquiry told The Huffington Post. CIA officials, however, told The Huffington Post that the computer records not only exist, but were provi ...

WASHINGTON -- White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough is personally negotiating how much of the Senate's so-called torture report, a probe into the CIA’s post-9/11 detention and interrogation program, will be redacted, according to sources involved in the negotiations. McDonough's leading role in the redaction discussion has raised eyebrows in the Senate, given that his position comes with a broad array ...

SEIU Supporting GOP Candidate for BART in SF

Oct 20 2014 12:27pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In the unlikeliest of scenarios, the hardline leftist Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021 is essentially supporting a GOP candidate for a seat on the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Board of Directors.  James Fang, a Republican, is running against Nick Josefowitz, a leftist environmentalist, and yet on August 13 the SEIU urged a vote of “no endorsement” for that race at a meeting of the San Francisco Democratic County Cent ...

Leon Panetta's Book, Barack Obama's Plight, and the Shreds of Statesmanship

Oct 13 2014 2:09pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama's got a lot of problems, some of his making, many not. His popularity is down. Democratic control of the U.S. Senate is teetering, and nobody wants him campaigning with them. His new war against ISIS isn't going well. Nobody much cares about his economic recovery except the folks actually benefiting most, and they're mostly voting Republican. And so on and on. And on. The last thing he need is one of his forme ...

Fleet Week, the USS Constellation and Me

Oct 12 2014 3:53pm CDT | Source: WND

This weekend, the San Francisco Bay area is celebrating Fleet Week again. Yeah! It was canceled last year because the government had money problems – the sequestration and all that. It was missed, and the fact that the U.S. Navy will be on full display again on the Bay is something to cheer! The program of events has everything – the Parade of Ships under the Golden Gate Bridge, the Blue Angels and their masterful piloting expertise, the Marines, the air ...

Note to Mr. Klein: Government Purchases Did Contribute to Ammo 'Buying Panic'

Oct 11 2014 12:31pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On October 9, TIME's Joe Klein published a column lumping Breitbart News reports in with "conspiracy theories" surrounding federal agency ammunition purchases and suggesting those reports are causal in confusing voters as the 2014 mid-term elections approach.   To push this template, Klein had to miss an April 8, 2013, Breitbart News column showing that government ammunition purchases were a component in the creation of a "politically-induced buying panic" ...

The simple, plastic, 3D printed “Liberator” pistol can be made better and more easily from hardware store parts (Photo: Defense Distributed) Remember the hoopla a few months ago when a young, libertarian entrepreneur named Cody Wilson announced that he had constructed the first functional 3D printed gun? And the growing outcry from the hoplophobes about “Ghost Guns” and so-called 80 percent lower receivers for AR-style rifles? Now Wilson and his company, Defense Distributed, has introdu ...
