Syria won't be like Iraq, says Rice

Sep 10 2013, 4:18am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 10 (IANS) US National Security Advisor Susan Rice lobbied for a military strike against Syria and said in a speech it won't be another war as in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Washington, Sep 10 — US National Security Advisor Susan Rice lobbied for a military strike against Syria and said in a speech it won't be another war as in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Rice was speaking at the New America Foundation, a Washington think tank, Monday as she outlined the US plan for a post-strike political settlement to resolve the underlying conflict in Syria, reports Xinhua.

She accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime of using chemical weapons, saying the "escalating use of chemical weapons threatens the national security of the United States" and that of its allies.

Rice said if US fails to respond to it, there would be a greater risk of violence and instability in the Middle East and North Africa. She also raised questions "whether the United States is truly prepared to employ the full range of its power to defend our national interests".

Addressing concerns of the US public on military intervention, Rice said the actions proposed by Obama will be "limited strikes to deter the Syrian regime from using chemical weapons and to degrade their ability to do so again".

"This would not be the United States launching another war. As the president has said, repeatedly, this will not be Iraq or Afghanistan," said Rice.

Rice said the US has been actively pushing for international support for the action, and will continue to pursue "our broader Syria strategy" after the military strikes, which she said the strikes "would complement and reinforce".

"Our overarching goal is to end the underlying conflict through a negotiated, political transition in which Assad leaves power," said Rice.

"The best way to achieve this is to keep the country and its institutions intact, but all parties have to be willing to negotiate."

Rice also said the US supports the creation of a representative transitional authority that organises elections, and intends to "renew our push for the UN-sponsored Geneva process following any limited strikes".

Punish Democrats for enabling Obama

Nov 2 2014 12:47pm CST | Source: WND

(NEW YORK POST) By Michael Goodwin In the New York Times the other day, anonymous aides to President Obama trashed Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Kerry was mocked mercilessly, with officials joking “that he is like the astronaut played by Sandra Bullock in the movie ‘Gravity,’ somersaulting through space, untethered to the White House.” A week before that, The Times reported that, despite Obama’s public efforts to calm fears ...

Oct 28 2014 9:41am CDT | Source: Big Government

This story originally appeared in Politico Magazine:  When President Obama, after months of equivocation over how to respond to the takeover of parts of Iraq and Syria by radical militants, announced in September that the United States would “lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat,” the White House swung quickly into action, sending proposed legislation to train and equip Syrian rebels to Capitol Hill that same day.  Unfortunately, the ...

Krauthammer: Turkey Reluctance to Fight ISIS Tied to Obama Being 'Not Serious' About Mission

Oct 13 2014 6:49pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Monday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer offered his thoughts on why the nation of Turkey has been reluctant to join the fight against ISIS, despite the mixed messages coming from the Obama administration and the Turkish government that they had. According to Krauthammer, it stems from the tone President Barack Obama has set about the war, which he said was “not serious.” “[Susan Rice] went on to say in fact the Turks have agre ...

Obama 'not using air power' against ISIS

Oct 13 2014 5:52pm CDT | Source: WND

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney says the Islamic State, or ISIS, continues to advance on Kobani and Baghdad because there is no meaningful air campaign being conducted by the United States, and the terrorist army will only gobble up more territory if that policy doesn’t change. McInerney is also accusing Turkey of duplicitous actions that help ISIS wipe out the Kurdish population, leave Turkey guilty of genocide and should c ...
