Syria won't be like Iraq, says Rice

Sep 10 2013, 4:18am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 10 (IANS) US National Security Advisor Susan Rice lobbied for a military strike against Syria and said in a speech it won't be another war as in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Washington, Sep 10 — US National Security Advisor Susan Rice lobbied for a military strike against Syria and said in a speech it won't be another war as in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Rice was speaking at the New America Foundation, a Washington think tank, Monday as she outlined the US plan for a post-strike political settlement to resolve the underlying conflict in Syria, reports Xinhua.

She accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime of using chemical weapons, saying the "escalating use of chemical weapons threatens the national security of the United States" and that of its allies.

Rice said if US fails to respond to it, there would be a greater risk of violence and instability in the Middle East and North Africa. She also raised questions "whether the United States is truly prepared to employ the full range of its power to defend our national interests".

Addressing concerns of the US public on military intervention, Rice said the actions proposed by Obama will be "limited strikes to deter the Syrian regime from using chemical weapons and to degrade their ability to do so again".

"This would not be the United States launching another war. As the president has said, repeatedly, this will not be Iraq or Afghanistan," said Rice.

Rice said the US has been actively pushing for international support for the action, and will continue to pursue "our broader Syria strategy" after the military strikes, which she said the strikes "would complement and reinforce".

"Our overarching goal is to end the underlying conflict through a negotiated, political transition in which Assad leaves power," said Rice.

"The best way to achieve this is to keep the country and its institutions intact, but all parties have to be willing to negotiate."

Rice also said the US supports the creation of a representative transitional authority that organises elections, and intends to "renew our push for the UN-sponsored Geneva process following any limited strikes".

Bowe Bergdahl's Grandstanding Attorney Vilifies Fox News

Jul 22 2014 1:41pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's attorney, Eugene Fidell, has apparently been retained to launch a hyper-partisan political campaign against Fox News. The Army has not charged Bergdahl with anything. According to some news reports, the Army hasn't even begun investigating Bergdahl. Nonetheless, one of Fidell's first media appearances was with the Huffington Post where he vilified Fox News for vilifying his client: “It’s very unfortunate that Fox News has an ...

LeBron's Announcement -- Crisis Management Lessons for House GOP on Benghazi?

Jul 17 2014 1:48pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

LeBron James's surprise announcement last Friday that he planned to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Miami Heat offers important lessons for effective crisis management. Indeed, the most important lesson might be applicable to House Republicans as they plan new hearings on Benghazi this fall. The first and most important is to admit a mistake yourself -- and take responsibility. In 2010, it will be recalled, ...

Obama, Bergdahl, and the Iraqi Deserters

Jun 16 2014 12:12am CDT | Source: Big Government

As terrorists overwhelmed Iraqi security forces, President Barack Obama attempted to wash his hands of any responsibility for Iraq's fate last week. "The fact that they are not willing to stand and fight and defend their posts against admittedly hardened terrorists, but not terrorists who are overwhelming in numbers, indicates that there's a problem with morale," he said, suggesting that if the Iraqis would not fight, tough luck for them. Obama's remarks were more than a ...

The Ever-Changing Bowe Bergdahl Narrative

Jun 10 2014 3:03pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Obama administration presented news of the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl trade alongside a narrative designed to explain why five Taliban commanders were exchanged for one member of the U.S. Army referred to as a "deserter" by those who served with him. It appeared to be a glorious celebration. President Obama met Mr. and Mrs. Bergdahl in the Rose Garden to triumphantly announce that America had freed captive Sgt. Bergdahl from the ruthless Taliban. Obama said to the B ...

Bergdahl-Taliban Swap Resurrects Charges of 'Imperial Presidency' for President Obama

Jun 9 2014 3:27pm CDT | Source: Big Government

“What's emerging is an imperial presidency, an uber presidency as I've called it, where the president can act unilaterally. This is only the latest example of that… Barack Obama is really the president Richard Nixon always wanted to be.” That’s constitutional expert and law professor Jonathan Turley responding to the shocking news that President Obama – without so much as a whisper to Congress of his intentions – unilaterally ...

Bergdahl: The tipping point

Jun 8 2014 2:17pm CDT | Source: WND

When I first reported on May 31 that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl (for whom Obama traded five top Taliban jihad commanders) was a deserter and traitor, drawing on years-old posts at my website, PamelaGeller.com, the media were still calling him a hero and the Obama trade a triumph. Although it is good to be the first, usually the true story goes nowhere, and it was only I, along with a few brave voices, banging out the true story over that long weekend. It is alway ...
