Obama nominates Indian-American to key State Department post

Sep 11 2013, 8:06am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 11 (IANS) President Barack Obama has nominated Puneet Talwar, a noted Indian-American Middle East policy specialist to a key diplomatic post as the assistant secretary of state for political military affairs.

Washington, Sep 11 — President Barack Obama has nominated Puneet Talwar, a noted Indian-American Middle East policy specialist to a key diplomatic post as the assistant secretary of state for political military affairs.

Talwar has been a Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for Iran, Iraq and the Gulf states on the White House National Security Staff since 2009.

Nominating him along with several others to key administration posts Tuesday, Obama said: "I am grateful that these talented and dedicated individuals have agreed to take on these important roles and devote their talents to serving the American people. I look forward to working with them in the coming months and years."

In his new job at the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, State Department's principal link with the Defence Department, Talwar will provide policy direction in the areas of international security, security assistance, military operations, defence strategy and plans, and defence trade.

In July, Obama had nominated another Indian American, Nisha Desai Biswal, currently assistant administrator for Asia in the US Agency for International Development, to succeed Robert Blake as assistant secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs.

Both Talwar and Biswal need to be confirmed by the Senate. Once confirmed they along with Dr Raj Shah, Administrator, USAID, the highest ranking Indian American in the Obama administration, will constitute a powerful triumvirate of Indian Americans at the State Department.

Talwar had earlier served as a senior professional staff member on the committee on Foreign Relations of the United States Senate (SFRC) from 2001 to 2009.

From 1997 to 1999, he was the chief advisor on the Middle East to vice president Joseph R Biden, who was then the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Talwar served as a member of the Department of State's Policy Planning Staff from 1999 to 2001. From 1992 to 1995, he served as a foreign policy advisor to House member Thomas C Sawyer and from 1990 to 1992, as an official with the United Nations.

Talwar received a BS from Cornell University and an MA from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs.

Earlier this year, Foreign Policy magazine named Talwar as one of the 50 Most Powerful Democrats in Foreign Policy.

Alan Keyes: Obama destroying 'everything American'

Oct 23 2014 8:09pm CDT | Source: WND

By Paul Bremmer Ambassador Alan Keyes is not a fan of Barack Obama. At all. The candidate who lost to Obama in the 2004 U.S. Senate race in Illinois believes the president has committed several high crimes and misdemeanors that warrant impeachment. And Keyes, a WND columnist who was given the prestigious Christopher Reeve First Amendment Award by the social and political advocacy organization The Creative Coalition on Oct. 14, is no ...

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) expressed that she was “proud” to have voted with President Barack Obama 99 percent of the time during her debate with Republican challenger Scott Brown on Thursday. When moderator Wolf Blitzer asked Shaheen about her record with the president, Shaheen did not contest that she has voted with the president 99 percent of the time, but argued “I work and I vote for New Hampshire, that’s what I’ve always done … I’m proud of my record.” She then pointed to her ...

Obama's evil Machiavellian Ebola strategy

Oct 23 2014 6:55pm CDT | Source: WND

But when one acquires states in a province disparate in language, customs, and orders, here are the difficulties, and here one needs to have great fortune and great industry to hold them; and one of the greatest and quickest remedies would be for whoever acquires it to go there to live in person. … The other, better remedy is to send colonies that are, as it were, fetters of that state, to one or two places, because it is necessary either to do this or to hold t ...

Obama can't help throwing his party under bus

Oct 23 2014 6:52pm CDT | Source: WND

Politically speaking, President Barack Obama is almost as toxic as the ominous viruses he continues to mismanage. Every Democratic candidate fears the contagion and seeks to quarantine himself from his presence and policies. It’s hardly unfair to say that Obama has earned his current condition, having squandered more unearned goodwill than any president in recent memory. Despite his fall, during a speech at Northwestern University ...

Cowardly Democratic Senate candidates

Oct 23 2014 6:50pm CDT | Source: WND

Maybe you had the same reaction. I’ve been around politics for 30 years, but I don’t remember seeing anything as dumb as Kentucky Democrat Alison Grimes’ refusal to say whether or not she voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. Asked that very simple, direct question by the editorial board of the Louisville Courier-Journal, she first tried to change the subject: “You know, this election isn’t about the president. It’s about making sure we put Kentu ...

Michelle Obama Rallies Voters For Mark Udall In Colorado Senate Race

Oct 23 2014 6:36pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama urged Colorado Democrats Thursday to recapture the energy of six years ago, choking up in a college town and reminiscing on her husband's first nomination in Denver. Obama was in Colorado to rally Democrats for Sen. Mark Udall, who faces a tight contest against Republican Rep. Cory Gardner in a race that could determine which party controls the Senate. Udall was elected to the Senate in 2008, when President Barack O ...
