I'm no spy: American jailed in Iran

London, Sep 11 (IANS) An American man jailed in Iran has accused the Iranian authorities of employing "unlawful tactics" to keep him in prison with a view to swapping him for Iranian prisoners held in US custody, the Guardian reported Wednesday.

London, Sep 11 — An American man jailed in Iran has accused the Iranian authorities of employing "unlawful tactics" to keep him in prison with a view to swapping him for Iranian prisoners held in US custody, the Guardian reported Wednesday.

Amir Hekmati, a former US marine, was arrested in Tehran in August 2011 for his alleged links with the CIA. He was accused of espionage by Iran.

Hekmati, 29, said his confession which was aired on Iranian state television was forced and used to fabricate him in the trial, the Guardian reported citing a letter written by Hekmati.

The letter, addressed to US Secretary of State John Kerry, was smuggled out of jail and was obtained by the Guardian.

"For over two years I have been held on false charges based solely on confessions obtained by force, threats, miserable prison conditions and prolonged periods of solitary confinement," Hekmati wrote.

The authorities in Iran has told Hekmati's state-appointed lawyer that he would only be released if two Iranian prisoners held in foreign jails were freed, according to the letter.

"This is part of a propaganda and hostage-taking effort by Iranian intelligence to secure the release of Iranians abroad being held on security-related charges," the letter says.

Hekmati was sentenced to death in January 2012 by an Iranian court. The verdict was later cancelled by a higher court. He is still awaiting a retrial.

John Kerry last month urged Tehran to release Hekmati from prison on the second anniversary of his arrest, saying Washington was "deeply concerned" about his detention.

Kerry: Kobani Is Just 'One Community'

Oct 13 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry downplayed the importance of defending the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani despite widespread reports that ISIS is using its success there as a recruiting tool. Kerry said, “Kobani is one community, and it’s a tragedy what is happening there, and we don’t diminish that. But we have said from day one it is going to take a period of time to bring the coalition thoroughly to the table, ...

'Life on Earth ends' if climate skeptics wrong

Oct 13 2014 1:33pm CDT | Source: WND

(CNSNEWS) — “Life as you know it on Earth ends” if climate change skeptics are wrong, Sec. of State John Kerry declared Thursday. But, even if climate alarmists are wrong, nothing bad can come of enacting their taxes, restrictions and regulations, Kerry said in a speech at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center: “I’d just say to all of you here that people need to feel the pressure from you. You all know what politics is about. I’m not in it now, but I’m dependent on it to help make ...

Does America Have a Foreign Policy?

Oct 13 2014 10:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sadly, the answer is 'no.' We have not had one since Barack Obama entered the Oval Office six years ago. That does not mean that his actions have been worse than his Bush predecessor's or that he has made more mistakes. That depends in good part on one's preferences and angle of vision. What it does mean is that the United States' external relations have not been guided by a comprehensive strategy based on a conception of our place in the world and ...

Bringing the Ebola war home

Oct 12 2014 3:50pm CDT | Source: WND

Back in the days of the Vietnam War, those of us who were on the wrong side – like John Kerry and Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland – were eager to “bring the war home.” That became the mantra of the political left – “bring the war home.” The idea was to make ordinary American citizens feel the effects of the war so they would quickly demand an unconditional withdrawal, setting the stage of a Communist victory – which they ultimately got. I ...

Clinton, Obama Share Blame for ISIS, Iraq

Oct 12 2014 7:36am CDT | Source: Big Government

President Barack Obama's policy on Iraq is a complete failure. As terrorists from the so-called Islamic State lay siege to Kobani, defeat once-solid Kurdish forces and threaten western Baghdad, the folly of Obama's campaign, limited to air strikes for purely political reasons, is clear to the world. And Obama's former advisers agree that his hasty, total withdrawal from Iraq in 2011 and inaction on Syria are the main reasons for the deadly cha ...
