I'm no spy: American jailed in Iran

London, Sep 11 (IANS) An American man jailed in Iran has accused the Iranian authorities of employing "unlawful tactics" to keep him in prison with a view to swapping him for Iranian prisoners held in US custody, the Guardian reported Wednesday.

London, Sep 11 — An American man jailed in Iran has accused the Iranian authorities of employing "unlawful tactics" to keep him in prison with a view to swapping him for Iranian prisoners held in US custody, the Guardian reported Wednesday.

Amir Hekmati, a former US marine, was arrested in Tehran in August 2011 for his alleged links with the CIA. He was accused of espionage by Iran.

Hekmati, 29, said his confession which was aired on Iranian state television was forced and used to fabricate him in the trial, the Guardian reported citing a letter written by Hekmati.

The letter, addressed to US Secretary of State John Kerry, was smuggled out of jail and was obtained by the Guardian.

"For over two years I have been held on false charges based solely on confessions obtained by force, threats, miserable prison conditions and prolonged periods of solitary confinement," Hekmati wrote.

The authorities in Iran has told Hekmati's state-appointed lawyer that he would only be released if two Iranian prisoners held in foreign jails were freed, according to the letter.

"This is part of a propaganda and hostage-taking effort by Iranian intelligence to secure the release of Iranians abroad being held on security-related charges," the letter says.

Hekmati was sentenced to death in January 2012 by an Iranian court. The verdict was later cancelled by a higher court. He is still awaiting a retrial.

John Kerry last month urged Tehran to release Hekmati from prison on the second anniversary of his arrest, saying Washington was "deeply concerned" about his detention.

Oct 21 2014 9:29pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Who is drawn to join violent terrorist groups and why? Could it be the violence itself? Australian prime minister Tony Abbott called the group, also known as ISIS, 'an apocalyptic death c ...

They supported the sequester which cut funding research for the Center For Disease Control. Maybe we could have been closer to a cure for a certain virus. They refused to hold confirmation hearings for President Obama's choice for Surgeon General because they don't like the nominee, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy (big surprise! Could the NRA's objection have something to do with it?) Gee, we could have us ...

Obama's Troublesome Distractions Won't Wreck His Asia-Pacific Pivot (But Not Because of Him)

Oct 21 2014 12:15pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

These are not good times for President Barack Obama, and they're apt to get worse before they get better. But one good thing for the president is that his Asia-Pacific Pivot -- heightened engagement with the rising region, and nascent superpower China -- hasn't been wrecked by the lengthening array of Obama administration distractions, including his troubled and tardy war against Isis. That the Obama administration has little to do with ...
