15 killed in Iraq violence

Sep 11 2013, 10:42am CDT | by IANS

Baghdad, Sep 11 (IANS) At least 15 people were killed and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

Baghdad, Sep 11 — At least 15 people were killed and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

Four soldiers were killed, including an officer, when gunmen using assault rifles attacked their checkpoint in southeast of Mosul, 400 km from Baghdad, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source as saying on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a primary school principal was shot dead by gunmen in front of his house in eastern Mosul, the source said.

Meanwhile, gunmen shot dead a civilian at a village in Mosul. Police also found unidentified bodies of two young men with bullet holes in their heads and chests, the source added.

In Diyala province, three policemen were killed and four wounded when gunmen attacked a checkpoint near the town of Buhruz, 65 km northeast of Baghdad, said a police source.

An official of the Sunni endowment office, responsible for running the Sunni mosques, was killed along with his wife in a roadside bomb explosion near their car in the city of Kan'an, the source said.

A child was also killed and four people were wounded when two roadside bombs went off near two houses in Maqdadiyah city.

In southern Iraq, gunmen shot dead a Sunni imam near his mosque in the town of Abu al-Khasib in southeast of the oil-hub city of Basra, 550 km south of Baghdad, an official from the Sunni endowment told reporters.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to full-blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Sep 20 2014 11:46am CDT | Source: Big Government

The watchdogs of social media criticized Katherine Heigl after she seemingly confused the setting of her new show "State of Affairs" with Afghanistan, rather than Iraq. The actress, who is playing a CIA analyst in the series, posted a photograph to her Instagram and Facebook pages on Thursday, where she wrote "Santa Clarita played the part of Kabul Afghanistan today for @nbcstateofaffairs. Kinda blew my mind..." Fans were quick to inform her that the signs in the b ...

Stephen Colbert Stomps All Over Fox News' 'Boots On The Ground' Coverage

Sep 19 2014 4:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WARNING: Some shoes may have been harmed in the making of this "Colbert Report" segment. Will there or will there not be boots on the ground in Iraq? Whatever the answer, Fox News is flat-out furious about it. But as far as Stephen Colbert is concerned, there's no question at all: "Of course there won't be American boots on the ground, our shoes are all made in China. ...

Blast them back to Stone Age

Sep 18 2014 6:11pm CDT | Source: WND

Let me see if I get this: We, the U.S., have satellite coverage of most the world and can read a license plate from space, and the NSA has been listening to Internet and phone traffic and Internet chatting worldwide – yet somehow we don’t have a clue about where there are concentrations of these ISIS characters in Syria and Iraq, and they are continuing to grow, making them an even larger visible target? We also have ...

Ratings: 'Meet the Press' Falls Back to Third But Still Improves

Sep 18 2014 2:15pm CDT | Source: Big Government

With the debut of a new host and a presidential appearance in the run up to Obama's pre-emptive war in Iraq, it would have been impossible for "Meet the Press" to achieve anything other than first place two weeks ago, which it did. Chuck Todd's second week saw a return to third place behind CBS' "Face the Nation" and ABC's "This Week." The silver lining, though, is that the ...

The Fix: Rand Paul just delivered a stem-winder against arming Syrian rebels. And many people agree with him.

Sep 18 2014 1:59pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was just on the Senate floor, speaking at length in opposition to arming the Syrian rebels against the Islamic State -- even as he supports airstrikes against that same foe. It was pretty apparently a losing battle for Paul, as there won't be a separate vote on the matter. And on its surface, it would appear to be poor politics; after all, the American people are pretty gung-ho about going after the extremists in Syria an ...
