15 killed in Iraq violence

Sep 11 2013, 10:42am CDT | by IANS

Baghdad, Sep 11 (IANS) At least 15 people were killed and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

Baghdad, Sep 11 — At least 15 people were killed and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

Four soldiers were killed, including an officer, when gunmen using assault rifles attacked their checkpoint in southeast of Mosul, 400 km from Baghdad, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source as saying on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a primary school principal was shot dead by gunmen in front of his house in eastern Mosul, the source said.

Meanwhile, gunmen shot dead a civilian at a village in Mosul. Police also found unidentified bodies of two young men with bullet holes in their heads and chests, the source added.

In Diyala province, three policemen were killed and four wounded when gunmen attacked a checkpoint near the town of Buhruz, 65 km northeast of Baghdad, said a police source.

An official of the Sunni endowment office, responsible for running the Sunni mosques, was killed along with his wife in a roadside bomb explosion near their car in the city of Kan'an, the source said.

A child was also killed and four people were wounded when two roadside bombs went off near two houses in Maqdadiyah city.

In southern Iraq, gunmen shot dead a Sunni imam near his mosque in the town of Abu al-Khasib in southeast of the oil-hub city of Basra, 550 km south of Baghdad, an official from the Sunni endowment told reporters.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to full-blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Israeli Novelist Aharon Appelfeld: It Is Not Morally Easy to Be Cruel

Jul 21 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Edinburgh International Film Festival
Since the beginning of the war, I have spoken twice to Aharon Appelfeld, the celebrated Israeli novelist and Holocaust survivor whose book, "Blooms of Darkness," has sold over a million copies. He is sort of secluded in his home in a little village close to Jerusalem. When there is an alarm, he goes into his cellar with his wife -- like everybody else does these days in Israel. When I asked his opinion about the events, ...

Iraq Veteran Darin Walker Could Lose Therapy Ducks In Dispute With Town

Jul 21 2014 3:06am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Darin Welker, a veteran of the Iraq War, says he relies on 14 pet ducks for comfort and physical therapy, but by keeping the birds, he's running afoul of local laws. As a result, the village of West Lafayette, Ohio, is trying to make the 36-year-old ditch his ducks. Welker told the Coshocton Tribune that he served nearly a year in Iraq in 2005 and came home with a bad back. While the Department of Veterans Affairs paid for his back surgery in 2012, the agency ducked his d ...

2013 CNN Heroes
(CNN) – Just days after the militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria said they killed hundreds of Syrians, dozens of Iraqi Christian families are now fleeing the ISIS-controlled city of Mosul, hoping to avoid a similar fate. On Friday, the al Qaeda splinter group issued an ultimatum to Iraqi Christians living in Mosul — by Saturday at noon (5 a.m. ET), they must convert to Islam, pay a fine or face “death by the sword.” A total of 52 Christian families left the city of Mosul earl ...

(MARION STAR) WEST LAFAYETTE — Darin Welker is facing a citation and a hearing in Coshocton Municipal Court for owning 14 ducks, as they are in violation of a village ordinance. Welker, who lives on Grandview Street in West Lafayette, was cited June 23 with a minor misdemeanor. Referee Arthur Mercante counts Zolani Petelo out
I’ve only cried twice at a public sporting event. And both times, I watched a hero of mine – Muhammad Ali – lose a fight. The first time was at the first Ali-Frazier fight, held on March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such mania in an audience as there was before that fight. Ali and Frazier genuinely hated each other. Before the fight, Frazier sat in his corner, gla ...

The Fix: Amid unrest in Iraq, Americans blame U.S. withdrawal more than its invasion

Kashmir Shiite Offer To Fight Against ISIS In Iraq
When it comes to the current violence in Iraq, Americans blame Iraq itself more than the United States' decision to go to war there, according to a new poll Friday from the Pew Research Center. But when it comes to America's culpability, there's something of a split. Slightly more Americans blame the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq ...

Executions Rise Worldwide In 2013

Jul 18 2014 8:16am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Ethical Fashion Show Berlin
MILAN (AP) — An Italian anti-death penalty group says the number of executions worldwide increased last year despite a global trend toward capital punishment abolition. The organization Hands off Cain, based in Rome, said Friday that at least 4,106 people were executed in 2013, up from 3,967 in 2012, due to increases in Iran and Iraq. China remains the world's top executioner, with more than 3,000 executions carried out last year, about equal to 2012. Still, th ...
