15 killed in Iraq violence

Sep 11 2013, 10:42am CDT | by IANS

Baghdad, Sep 11 (IANS) At least 15 people were killed and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

Baghdad, Sep 11 — At least 15 people were killed and eight wounded in separate attacks in Iraq Wednesday, police said.

Four soldiers were killed, including an officer, when gunmen using assault rifles attacked their checkpoint in southeast of Mosul, 400 km from Baghdad, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source as saying on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a primary school principal was shot dead by gunmen in front of his house in eastern Mosul, the source said.

Meanwhile, gunmen shot dead a civilian at a village in Mosul. Police also found unidentified bodies of two young men with bullet holes in their heads and chests, the source added.

In Diyala province, three policemen were killed and four wounded when gunmen attacked a checkpoint near the town of Buhruz, 65 km northeast of Baghdad, said a police source.

An official of the Sunni endowment office, responsible for running the Sunni mosques, was killed along with his wife in a roadside bomb explosion near their car in the city of Kan'an, the source said.

A child was also killed and four people were wounded when two roadside bombs went off near two houses in Maqdadiyah city.

In southern Iraq, gunmen shot dead a Sunni imam near his mosque in the town of Abu al-Khasib in southeast of the oil-hub city of Basra, 550 km south of Baghdad, an official from the Sunni endowment told reporters.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to full-blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007, when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Graham: WH the 'Only People' Who Think ISIS Strategy Is Working

Oct 14 2014 7:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) argued that officials in the Obama administration are “the only people in the world” that believe the United States’ strategy against ISIS is working while remaining evasive on a possible 2016 presidential run on Tuesday’s “On the Record” on the Fox News Channel. “The goal is to degrade and destroy ISIL and deny them a safe haven in Syria and Iraq to attack America. That goal is not being achieved. We are going backwards, not forward. S ...

Thank You, Ben Affleck

Oct 14 2014 12:09pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Last week, Ben Affleck courageously took a stand on Bill Maher's show, Real Time. He questioned Maher and his guest panelist, Sam Harris, for making sweeping generalizations about the majority of Muslims. As the world looks with horror and disgust at the barbaric acts of extremists in Iraq and Syria, it is understandable that people of good will are justifiably searching for answers. When we witness evil, all humans have a fundamental ...

National Union of Students Rejects Pro-Kurdish Motion as 'Islamophobic'

Oct 14 2014 4:38am CDT | Source: Big Government

Despite widespread support for Kurdish fighters resisting the advance of Islamic State in Iraq, the National Union of Students has failed to pass a motion expressing solidarity with the Kurdish people because they consider the ongoing conflict with ISIS to be “Islamophobic”. Kerry: Kobani Is Just 'One Community'

Oct 13 2014 3:00pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry downplayed the importance of defending the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani despite widespread reports that ISIS is using its success there as a recruiting tool. Kerry said, “Kobani is one community, and it’s a tragedy what is happening there, and we don’t diminish that. But we have said from day one it is going to take a period of time to bring the coalition thoroughly to the table, to rebuild some of the morale and capacity of the Iraqi army, and ...
