Five killed in attack on US consulate in Afghanistan

Sep 13 2013, 3:05am CDT | by IANS

Kabul, Sep 13 (IANS) At least five people were killed and 23 injured early Friday morning as two car bombs and ensuing firing hit the US consulate in Herat city in western Afghanistan, a local security source said.

Kabul, Sep 13 — At least five people were killed and 23 injured early Friday morning as two car bombs and ensuing firing hit the US consulate in Herat city in western Afghanistan, a local security source said.

"Four or five armed militants, carrying heavy weapons and suicide vests stormed the consulate building at around 0515 local time," the security source said

"They initially detonated two car bombs and tried to enter the facility and take control of the building. Sporadic firing still could be heard later Friday morning there," he added, Xinhua reported.

The Taliban have claimed the responsibility for the incident.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullha Mujahid told the local media that the militants launched the attack and five Taliban fighters were involved in it.

The security source said no member of the consulate was injured in the incident.

"All US diplomats are safe in the building," the source said.

The killed included one Afghan civilian, two attackers and two local security guards.

Of the civilians who were passing by, 18 were injured. Two guards and three policemen were also wounded in the incident in the city, which is the capital of Herat province and located 640 km west of Kabul.

"The number of the casualties might go up," the source said.

The blast also damaged the consulate compound wall and several other nearby houses. Local TV channels showed the gate and supportive walls of the facility were destroyed by the force of the blasts.

The explosions sent a thick black smoke above the site.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched annual offensive in April against Afghan government forces and about 98,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

The Taliban asked civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centres regarded as the legitimate targets by militants, not to support the government and foreign troops.

Report: Pentagon Lost Track of 203,888 Weapons Provided to Afghan Security Forces

Jul 30 2014 10:14am CDT | Source: Big Government

A Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction report indicates the Pentagon has lost track of "203,888" of the "747,000 weapons and auxiliary equipment" sent to Afghanistan during the last decade. According to Roll Call, fear exists that "at least some of the weapons may be available on the black market." And this means some of the weapons may be in the hands of the very militants against whom they were intended to be used. Fox ...

U.S. Evacuation in Libya Shows Ill Effects of American Internventionism

Jul 28 2014 9:04am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The American foreign policy elite should learn something from the recent humiliating evacuation of the U.S. embassy in Tripoli, Libya -- amid the chaos of tribal civil war in that country -- but probably won't. Since World War II, this bipartisan elite has thumbed its nose at the traditional U.S. foreign policy of strategic independence and military restraint overseas, which was initiated by the nati ...

CIA Does the Torture, U.S. Ally Pays the Price

Jul 25 2014 2:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The European Court of Human Rights yesterday ruled against Poland, charging our ally with human rights violations for helping the CIA operate an 'extraordinary rendition' program in which two persons suspected of terrorism were delivered to a "black site" in 2002-2003, for detention, interrogation and torture -- in the attempt to extract bogus confessions. Court documents provide insight into the CIA's "enhanced in ...

Six Year Blues

Jul 24 2014 2:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Almost every president in recent history has experienced what I like to call "The six-year blues." For Reagan it was Iran-Contra, for Clinton it was Monica Lewinsky, and for George W. Bush, it was Iraq and Afghanistan. President's Truman and Johnson decided they didn't want to run for a second elected term because they were so unpopular. Nixon needs no explanation. And now, President Obama is suffering from his own version of "the blues." Wi ...

Selective Humanitarianism: #LookImHelping...?

Jul 24 2014 9:33am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a human being fortunate enough to painfully observe, and not be victim to, the atrocities ongoing in our world today, I've noticed a tech-based trend when it comes to caring. Social media has played a triumphant role in magnifying what bothers its users -- us, the younger generation. This "bother", however, doesn't appear to have any kind of long-term consistency. Why is that? Why have we collectively moved our online concerns for humanit ...
