Five killed in attack on US consulate in Afghanistan

Sep 13 2013, 3:05am CDT | by IANS

Kabul, Sep 13 (IANS) At least five people were killed and 23 injured early Friday morning as two car bombs and ensuing firing hit the US consulate in Herat city in western Afghanistan, a local security source said.

Kabul, Sep 13 — At least five people were killed and 23 injured early Friday morning as two car bombs and ensuing firing hit the US consulate in Herat city in western Afghanistan, a local security source said.

"Four or five armed militants, carrying heavy weapons and suicide vests stormed the consulate building at around 0515 local time," the security source said

"They initially detonated two car bombs and tried to enter the facility and take control of the building. Sporadic firing still could be heard later Friday morning there," he added, Xinhua reported.

The Taliban have claimed the responsibility for the incident.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullha Mujahid told the local media that the militants launched the attack and five Taliban fighters were involved in it.

The security source said no member of the consulate was injured in the incident.

"All US diplomats are safe in the building," the source said.

The killed included one Afghan civilian, two attackers and two local security guards.

Of the civilians who were passing by, 18 were injured. Two guards and three policemen were also wounded in the incident in the city, which is the capital of Herat province and located 640 km west of Kabul.

"The number of the casualties might go up," the source said.

The blast also damaged the consulate compound wall and several other nearby houses. Local TV channels showed the gate and supportive walls of the facility were destroyed by the force of the blasts.

The explosions sent a thick black smoke above the site.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched annual offensive in April against Afghan government forces and about 98,000 NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

The Taliban asked civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centres regarded as the legitimate targets by militants, not to support the government and foreign troops.

Dem Senator: Obama's Plan To Train Syrian Opposition Would Cost $100,000 Per Rebel

Sep 17 2014 1:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On September 16 Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) blasted President Obama's request for $500 million to train 5,000 Syrian rebels, saying the breakdown on the money works out to "$100,000 per [rebel]" for one year. He said that even after all that money is spent the U.S. has no guarantee that the rebels will not side with ISIS for religious reasons, and fight Bashar al-Assad instead of the ISIS insurgency.  According to The Hill, Manchin said: ...

4,486 American Soldiers Have Died In Iraq. President Obama Is Continuing A Pointless And Deadly Quagmire.

Sep 17 2014 6:05am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I recently wrote a satirical article highlighting my view that if taxes and military service were required during every American military engagement, we'd never again wage wars with such ease and impulsiveness. Contrary to the erroneous and ridiculous interpretation of one website that claimed I believe "we're a nation of selfish sloths" (thanks for bothering to read my other artic ...

Obama Has Right Strategy on ISIS, But Harder Questions Coming

Sep 16 2014 12:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Obama's plan of partnering with our Arab allies on airstrikes while allowing Iraqi forces, Kurds and Syrian rebels to do the fighting on the ground is the right approach to dealing with ISIS. But those of us who have served in the military know the best-outlined plans can quickly be torn up by the realities of combat. The question facing the Obama administration is what happens next if things don't go according to plan? ISIS is undoubt ...

5 Years Ago, Best Friend Fulfilled Soldier's Final Wish By Wearing Florescent Dress To His Funeral

Sep 15 2014 5:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It should’ve been a somber affair, but that wasn’t Pvt. Kevin Elliott’s style. While on a break from serving in Afghanistan, Elliott gave his best friend, Barry Delaney, specific instructions were he to die in action. The Dundee, Scotland, soldier made Delaney promise that he would wear a bright dress and socks to his funeral, the Guardian reported back in 2009. When that day came in September 2009, Delaney made good on his vow. He squeezed ...

This Is the Worst Refugee Crisis Since WWII. It's Time for Us to Rethink Our Response

Sep 15 2014 11:19am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

We started this year with a frightening record: More than 51 million fellow human beings were forcibly displaced from their homes by conflict and human rights abuse. It is the highest number recorded since the refugee crisis following World War II. As we are now approaching mid-September 2014, we do not know exactly how many men, women and children have been forced to flee their homes. What we do know is that the number is dramatica ...
