US 'heartened' at India gang rape case verdict

Sep 14 2013, 12:06am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 14 (IANS) The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death.

Washington, Sep 14 — The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death.

"We are heartened to see that the Indian justice system has spoken and the perpetrators of these heinous attacks have been convicted and sentenced in a court of law," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Friday in response to a question.

"Like so many people in India and around the world, we were saddened by this horrific act of violence, yet moved by civil society's response at the same time," she said noting Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken about it and

"cited this woman's bravery and her fight for justice."

"In India, as in all countries around the world, gender-based violence continues to be a challenge that we are focused on countering, on working with people to counter all across the world," Harf said.

The New York Times reported in graphic detail the joyful reaction of Indian people to the four convicted men being sentenced to death, but also noted "Many doubt death sentences will stem India sexual attacks."

"A wave of protests after the December rape have set remarkable changes in motion in India, a country where for decades vicious sexual harassment has been dismissed indulgently, called 'eve-teasing,'" the influential US daily said

"But some of India's most ardent women's rights advocates hung back from Friday's celebration, sceptical that four hangings would do anything to stem violence against women, a problem whose proportions are gradually coming into focus," it said.

The Washington Post too recalled how the case had "sparked days of protests in the capital and around the country and inspired a subsequent anti-rape law that criminalises offenses such as stalking, voyeurism and acid attacks."

"Although rapes in both rural and urban areas of India have continued, advocates say the attention the case received has had an impact," it reported.

"Rape sentencing feels like judgment day for all of India," reported CNN noting "The horrific nature of the crime got to people. It was like a bomb had exploded inside the collective Indian psyche. The nation erupted in outrage."

"Crowds poured into the streets of major cities and openly questioned the civility of their own society," the channel recalled asking, "How could the world's most populous democracy, a nation that had finally made its stand on the global stage, allow such a heinous act to take place?"

(Times of Israel) U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday phoned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and apologized to him in the name of the Obama administration for the comments made by an anonymous US official who called the prime minister “a chickenshit.” On Thursday, Kerry had publicly distanced himself from the comments, stressing that neither he nor US President Barack Obama were behind the remarks, which he said were “disgraceful, unacceptable, and damaging.” Amer ...

War without Strategy

Oct 31 2014 11:50am CDT | Source: Big Government

This article by Col. Bing West originally appeared at the Hoover Institution: Forty-three percent of voters ranked the economy as the top issue in the 2014 midterm election, versus 15% who cited foreign policy.1 Yet 62% said they were very concerned about terrorism, the largest percentage polled since 2007, before the war turned around in Iraq.2  So why is the public both concerned and yet not concerned? The answer is that America’s leaders are providing ...

President Obama's Mixed-Up Alliances: Israel v. Iran

Oct 31 2014 9:31am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Obama Administration, it seems, is very sensitive to criticism. At least, when Israelis make light of (one of) them.  In the beginning of 2014, President Obama and his Secretary of State, John Kerry, were fuming that Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaa’lon dared to deride an earlier American peace plan proposal and to ridicule Secretary Kerry in an off-the-record comment to the media: (T)he American security plan that was presented to us is not worth the paper it ...

The Nuclear Option: Democrats Win if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid Lose Power Nov. 4

Oct 30 2014 7:44pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If pollsters are to be believed, Democrats nationwide do not have much to look forward to in next week's elections. There is, however, a silver lining that stands to benefit the party and liberal-leaning voters everywhere in ways that far outweigh the anguish they might suffer on Election Day. Poised to lose control of the Senate and give up even more seats in the House, Democrats in Congress wil ...
