US 'heartened' at India gang rape case verdict

Sep 14 2013, 12:06am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 14 (IANS) The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death.

Washington, Sep 14 — The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death.

"We are heartened to see that the Indian justice system has spoken and the perpetrators of these heinous attacks have been convicted and sentenced in a court of law," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Friday in response to a question.

"Like so many people in India and around the world, we were saddened by this horrific act of violence, yet moved by civil society's response at the same time," she said noting Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken about it and

"cited this woman's bravery and her fight for justice."

"In India, as in all countries around the world, gender-based violence continues to be a challenge that we are focused on countering, on working with people to counter all across the world," Harf said.

The New York Times reported in graphic detail the joyful reaction of Indian people to the four convicted men being sentenced to death, but also noted "Many doubt death sentences will stem India sexual attacks."

"A wave of protests after the December rape have set remarkable changes in motion in India, a country where for decades vicious sexual harassment has been dismissed indulgently, called 'eve-teasing,'" the influential US daily said

"But some of India's most ardent women's rights advocates hung back from Friday's celebration, sceptical that four hangings would do anything to stem violence against women, a problem whose proportions are gradually coming into focus," it said.

The Washington Post too recalled how the case had "sparked days of protests in the capital and around the country and inspired a subsequent anti-rape law that criminalises offenses such as stalking, voyeurism and acid attacks."

"Although rapes in both rural and urban areas of India have continued, advocates say the attention the case received has had an impact," it reported.

"Rape sentencing feels like judgment day for all of India," reported CNN noting "The horrific nature of the crime got to people. It was like a bomb had exploded inside the collective Indian psyche. The nation erupted in outrage."

"Crowds poured into the streets of major cities and openly questioned the civility of their own society," the channel recalled asking, "How could the world's most populous democracy, a nation that had finally made its stand on the global stage, allow such a heinous act to take place?"

NEW YORK – The New York Times has excluded David Limbaugh’s new book “Jesus on Trial: A Lawyer Affirms the Truth of the Gospel,” from it bestseller list despite sales figures superior to several books currently on the list. The book’s publisher, Regnery Publishing, told WND the exclusion of Limbaugh’s book from the Sept. 28 print hardcover bestseller list reflects ideological bias against conservative and Christian titles. “While publishers have lon ...

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., is ripping President Obama over reports he will personally oversee the bombing of ISIS targets in Syria and believes the bipartisan vote to arm and train Syrian rebels for the fight is a “big mistake.” The U.S. has been conducting air strikes against ISIS in Iraq for weeks. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Obama is planning to be directly involved in plotting air s ...

More insane arming of 'moderates'

Sep 18 2014 6:24pm CDT | Source: WND

I’m trying to look on the bright side of what passed for debate over another doomed effort to secure U.S. interests by embarking on the fruitless pursuit, cultivation and empowerment of Islamic “moderates,” this time in Syria. We would get better results sending an expeditionary force after the Loch Ness sea monster. No matter. In deliberations resembling a stampede, we heard: The ISIS is coming, the ISIS is coming! Quick, leave our own borders und ...

Kerry: America at 'war against this enemy of Islam'

Sep 18 2014 4:54pm CDT | Source: WND

(Washington FreeBeacon) Secretary of State John Kerry gave a long, meandering reply to Chairman of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee Rep. Joe Wilson (R., S.C.) after being asked: “Yes or no? Is America at war?” “Well, you know,” Kerry paused to laugh, “Um, I’m going to answer that, Mr. Chairman, but um…you know…” Kerry waffled a while longer, explaining how the American mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) is not li ...

HUFFPOST HILL - The House Will Smell Ya Later

Sep 18 2014 4:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Turnout was high for today's vote on Scottish independence, and as soon as we know how that'll affect Hillary's chances in Iowa, we'll let you know. Ezekiel Emanuel penned an Atlantic essay titled, "Why I Hope to Die at 75" that had absolutely nothing to do with putting up with an 80-year-old Rahm Emanuel. And the House is avoiding a number of key votes to get back to their districts and tend to the important issues they must i ...

Obama Is Wrong That ISIS Is 'Not Islamic'

Sep 18 2014 4:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"We are fighting an ideology, not a regime." - U.S. Secretary Of State John Kerry "Now let's make two things clear: ISIL is not 'Islamic.' No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL's victims have been Muslim. And ISIL is certainly not a state. It was formerly al-Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq, and has taken advantage of sectarian strife and Syria ...

Iranian Foreign Minister: America Helped Create ISIS And Is Taking The Wrong Approach ... Again

Sep 18 2014 7:05am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Wednesday that the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq created the extremist group the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.
