US 'heartened' at India gang rape case verdict

Sep 14 2013, 12:06am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 14 (IANS) The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death.

Washington, Sep 14 — The US welcomed the verdict of an Indian court in last December's horrific gang rape and murder of a New Delhi woman as the media prominently reported the perpetrators being sentenced to death.

"We are heartened to see that the Indian justice system has spoken and the perpetrators of these heinous attacks have been convicted and sentenced in a court of law," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Friday in response to a question.

"Like so many people in India and around the world, we were saddened by this horrific act of violence, yet moved by civil society's response at the same time," she said noting Secretary of State John Kerry had spoken about it and

"cited this woman's bravery and her fight for justice."

"In India, as in all countries around the world, gender-based violence continues to be a challenge that we are focused on countering, on working with people to counter all across the world," Harf said.

The New York Times reported in graphic detail the joyful reaction of Indian people to the four convicted men being sentenced to death, but also noted "Many doubt death sentences will stem India sexual attacks."

"A wave of protests after the December rape have set remarkable changes in motion in India, a country where for decades vicious sexual harassment has been dismissed indulgently, called 'eve-teasing,'" the influential US daily said

"But some of India's most ardent women's rights advocates hung back from Friday's celebration, sceptical that four hangings would do anything to stem violence against women, a problem whose proportions are gradually coming into focus," it said.

The Washington Post too recalled how the case had "sparked days of protests in the capital and around the country and inspired a subsequent anti-rape law that criminalises offenses such as stalking, voyeurism and acid attacks."

"Although rapes in both rural and urban areas of India have continued, advocates say the attention the case received has had an impact," it reported.

"Rape sentencing feels like judgment day for all of India," reported CNN noting "The horrific nature of the crime got to people. It was like a bomb had exploded inside the collective Indian psyche. The nation erupted in outrage."

"Crowds poured into the streets of major cities and openly questioned the civility of their own society," the channel recalled asking, "How could the world's most populous democracy, a nation that had finally made its stand on the global stage, allow such a heinous act to take place?"

On Election Night, Pack an Umbrella

Nov 4 2014 2:02pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I spent the last 24 hours of the last midterm elections clutching a pocket folder with two sets of index cards inside. On one set was printed a victory speech no one outside our campaign thought we were going to need. On the other was a concession speech I hadn't even shown the guy who might have to deliver it that night, like it was his own eulogy. Four years ago I was writing speeches for Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Majority Leader and the Re ...

Two States to Watch

Nov 4 2014 8:56am CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

First Read: “We’ll have a good idea early in the evening of how Election Night is going to break. The two states to watch — North Carolina (where final polling places close at 7:30 am ET) and New Hampshire (where they close at 8:00 pm ET). Every scenario of Democrats holding on to the Senate assumes they win those two states. If we’re able to put those two in the Democratic column, then we’re going to have to wait for Alaska, especially if Georgia goes to a runoff. But if Republicans win ...

What a Republican Senate Would Mean for World Politics

Nov 4 2014 7:54am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On Tuesday, when tens of millions of US voters go to the polls, they are very likely to deliver a US Senate majority to the Republican Party. Six years into the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama and four years after the midterm elections that delivered control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans and conservative Speaker John Boehner, most polls and poll aggregate forecasts give the Republicans anywhere from a strong (70 percent) t ...

How You Can Help Save the Senate

Nov 3 2014 1:56pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The battle for the Senate has been a cliffhanger for months. Races in at least ten states that will decide the balance of power have remained too close to call, despite corporate pundits' haste to forecast a GOP victory. Now, on the eve of Election Day, it's tempting to throw up your hands, sit back and wait for the returns to come in. That's exactly what Republicans are hoping we'll do. Give up hope and do nothing. What's the alternative? How can pr ...

MPs Should Get Some Business Experience before Lecturing Us Against Exiting the EU

Nov 3 2014 9:23am CST | Source: Big Government

I'm getting quite tired of listening to politicians, and indeed some friends, who have never set up a business, or run a business, tell me about recklessness of pulling out of the European Union. Now, as of yet, I don't have kids, although I am a proud uncle. But based on the fact that I know so little about parenting, I wouldn't march blasé into broadcasting studios lecturing parents on where to shop, or on the process of applying for nursery vouchers ...

Last-minute polling finds the Republicans on track for a Senate victory tomorrow. Early voting, though, suggests it could be close. And what kind of voters are still undecided? This is HuffPollster for Monday, November 3, 2014. A GOP SENATE LOOKS MORE LIKELY - With less than 24 hours remaining before polls open nationwide, a final round of polls largely confirms previous findings in the much-watched battle for control of the U.S. Senate.
