33 killed in Iraq attacks

Sep 14 2013, 3:17pm CDT | by IANS

Baghdad, Sep 15 (IANS) At least 33 people were killed and 45 others wounded in multiple attacks across Iraq Saturday, police said.

Baghdad, Sep 15 — At least 33 people were killed and 45 others wounded in multiple attacks across Iraq Saturday, police said.

In the northern province of Nineveh, 27 people were killed and 36 wounded in a suicide bombing near provincial capital Mosul, Xinhua reported citing a police source.

The attack occurred in the afternoon when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive vest at a funeral in Baashiqa town, some 10 km northeast of Mosul, which is about 400 km north of here.

Earlier, the source put the toll at 22 killed and 41 wounded. The toll could rise further as many of the wounded are in critical condition.

Elsewhere, six people were killed and nine others wounded in separate bombings and shootings in central Iraq.

A roadside bomb detonated at a village in Abu Ghraib area, some 25 km west of the national capital Baghdad, killing three people and wounding five others, a police source said.

Gunmen in a car killed a civilian and wounded another in a drive-by shooting in Ramadi city, some 100 km west of Baghdad, the source added.

A man and a woman were killed and three women got wounded in a roadside bomb explosion on a main road at a village outside Dujail city, some 60 km north of Baghdad, a police source said.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years, which raises fears that the country is sliding back to a full-blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007 when monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Expert: US Often Has 'Zero Capability' of Determining if Legal Immigrants Are National Security Threat

Sep 30 2014 10:21am CDT | Source: Big Government

During Monday's National Security Action Summit, NumbersUSA's Rosemary Jenks, one of the nation's foremost immigration experts, said America must better screen legal immigrants to avoid another terrorist attack. Jenks pointed out that just this year alone, there have been "474 so-called special-interest aliens from country's linked to terrorism" such as Syria, Iran, Iraq, a ...

Vatican: UN Guilty of ‘Apathy’ and ‘Indifference’ in Face of Multiple Global Conflicts

Sep 30 2014 9:20am CDT | Source: Big Government

With unprecedented candor, the Vatican has censured the United Nations, accusing it of “apathy” and “indifference” in the face of the violent conflicts besieging the world today. Rather than hiding behind diplomatic generalities, the Vatican did not mince words in taking the UN to task, calling the organization “irresponsible.” On Tuesday the Vatican released the full text of its address to the General ...

Embracing Assad Is a Better Strategy for the U.S. Than Supporting the Least Bad Jihadis

Sep 29 2014 6:05pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Middle East today is in as big a mess as I've seen it in a lifetime. By most measures it still continues to worsen, as ever new enemies to the U.S. pop up onto the scene. It is attracting polarized youthful jihadis from both East and West ready to fight us -- all high on the blood aphrodisiac of beheadings and bombings. The U.S. and most other countries understandably seek to suppress the present savage civil conflicts raging in Iraq and Syr ...

Americans Don't Feel Personally Affected By ISIS Conflict, Poll Finds

Sep 29 2014 2:37pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Americans, who largely support airstrikes against the Islamic State, don't think that the military campaign will have much of an impact on their lives, according to a HuffPost/YouGov poll released Monday. Just 24 percent of respondents predicted that they will be affected a great deal or a fair amount by the airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, while 60 percent said the strikes will have not much or no effect on their lives ...

Asymmetric Warfare Goes Both Ways

Sep 29 2014 12:55pm CDT | Source: Big Government

This story originally ran at Cicero Magazine: During the last decade and a half of militant extremism with global ambitions, asymmetric warfare has been a much-ballyhooed concept sometimes alleged to give the weaker belligerent an inherent, automatic advantage. But this is a gross oversimplification, and when it takes root in the minds of those threatened by and opposing terrorism, it can become a self-defeating ...

Rick Santorum Suggests That Only Muslims Are Violent

Sep 29 2014 9:53am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Ex-Senator and religious film producer Rick Santorum blasted practitioners of Islam at the Values Voter Summit this past week, contending that the current conflict in the Middle East is a product of an age-old fight between the West and those who see the world in a “fundamentally different” way — namely, Muslims. During his speech to the assembly on Friday and a subsequent interview with The Daily Beast, Santorum drew a firm line between the Muslim world and the “Western world,” arguing ...

Obama faults spies for ISIS failures

Sep 29 2014 7:32am CDT | Source: WND

(DAILY BEAST) Nearly eight months ago, some of President Obama’s senior intelligence officials were already warning that ISIS was on the move. In the beginning of 2014, ISIS fighters had defeated Iraqi forces in Fallujah, leading much of the U.S. intelligence community to assess they would try to take more of Iraq. But in an interview that aired Sunday evening, the president told 60 Minutes that the rise of the group now proclaiming itself a caliphate in territory between Syr ...

Khorosan Group 'does not exist'

Sep 28 2014 8:54pm CDT | Source: WND

(NATIONAL REVIEW) — We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the ...
