Hundreds missing in Colorado floods

Sep 14 2013, 8:24pm CDT | by IANS

Washigton, Sep 15 (IANS) Hundreds of people remained missing and at least four were confirmed dead Saturday in one of the worst floods hitting the US state of Colorado in three decades, Al Jazeera reported.

Washigton, Sep 15 — Hundreds of people remained missing and at least four were confirmed dead Saturday in one of the worst floods hitting the US state of Colorado in three decades, Al Jazeera reported.

Power and water supply has been badly affected after heavy rains in the state. Search-and-rescue teams used boats and helicopters to pull stranded residents to safety and to try to find residents still missing, authorities said.

Patrick Von Keyserling, an emergency official in Boulder county, an area heavily affected by flooding, said 218 people were unaccounted for.

"That number will fluctuate as families start locating people and as we pick up people that have been stranded with our helicopter operation," he said.

He added that the rescue operations would continue "as the weather is permitting".

"Certainly the intent is to find all unaccountable people. Some may be at rescue centres or staying with relatives," Von Keyserling said.

The floods are the worst to hit Colorado for more than 30 years, and have prompted President Barack Obama to approve a federal disaster assistance request.

Evacuation orders have been issued in several areas, according to a tweet by Colorado Office of Emergency Management.

"The town of Orchard is in immediate danger. EVACUATE NOW," it said. "The town of Goodrich is under an evacuation order."

Motorists were trapped in their cars with emergency crews scrambling to reach them.

"Many, many communities in our western mountains are completely isolated. There is no road access, no telephone information, no power, no water, no sewer," said Sheriff Joe Pelle of Boulder county.

At least four people have been killed, including a couple swept away in floodwaters after stopping their car northwest of Boulder.

Also killed was a resident whose body was found in a collapsed building near Jamestown, an evacuated enclave north of Boulder, and a man whose body was discovered during flood-watch patrols in Colorado Springs, officials said.

States' hidden costs of illegal immigration

Sep 19 2014 6:43pm CDT | Source: WND

A Colorado newspaper recently trumpeted the announcement that “Colorado county jails no longer holding immigrants for ICE.” The same thing is happening in practically every state: Local law enforcement is abandoning any attempt to help the federal government identify and deport criminal aliens. The untold story is how much the willful neglect of immigration law enforcement is costing the nation and the states. Let’s start with the elementary, pro ...

Peyton Manning is here to offer us all a somewhat obvious business lesson: legal pot is good for the pizza business. Manning, the Denver Broncos’ quarterback who bought a whole bunch of Papa John's franchises just before Colorado residents voted to legalize recreational marijuana, said in a recent interview that legal pot has been a boon for sales. "There’s some different laws out here in Colorado," Manning to ...

Colorado Rejects Jailing Illegals for ICE

Sep 19 2014 8:22am CDT | Source: Big Government

Colorado is now the first state in the union whose complete roster of county jailers has individually rejected retainer requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Due to pressure brought by the ACLU, no more immigrants will be held in the jails until federal agents make a decision as to whether the immigrants will be jailed for possible immigration violations. Mark Silverstein, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado, cheered, "All sh ...

The Fix: A bunch of new Senate polls look good for Republicans. Let’s wait and see.

Sep 18 2014 9:27am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

We've seen lots of high-quality Senate polls this past week. And many of the polls, if accurate (key caveat!), paint a very nice picture for Republicans looking to win the Senate majority. In fact, the GOP over the past week and a half has seen its best poll to date in more than a half dozen races: Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, New Hampshire and Louisiana (according to Real Clear Politics compilation of polls). For e ...
