Hundreds missing in Colorado floods

Sep 14 2013, 8:24pm CDT | by IANS

Washigton, Sep 15 (IANS) Hundreds of people remained missing and at least four were confirmed dead Saturday in one of the worst floods hitting the US state of Colorado in three decades, Al Jazeera reported.

Washigton, Sep 15 — Hundreds of people remained missing and at least four were confirmed dead Saturday in one of the worst floods hitting the US state of Colorado in three decades, Al Jazeera reported.

Power and water supply has been badly affected after heavy rains in the state. Search-and-rescue teams used boats and helicopters to pull stranded residents to safety and to try to find residents still missing, authorities said.

Patrick Von Keyserling, an emergency official in Boulder county, an area heavily affected by flooding, said 218 people were unaccounted for.

"That number will fluctuate as families start locating people and as we pick up people that have been stranded with our helicopter operation," he said.

He added that the rescue operations would continue "as the weather is permitting".

"Certainly the intent is to find all unaccountable people. Some may be at rescue centres or staying with relatives," Von Keyserling said.

The floods are the worst to hit Colorado for more than 30 years, and have prompted President Barack Obama to approve a federal disaster assistance request.

Evacuation orders have been issued in several areas, according to a tweet by Colorado Office of Emergency Management.

"The town of Orchard is in immediate danger. EVACUATE NOW," it said. "The town of Goodrich is under an evacuation order."

Motorists were trapped in their cars with emergency crews scrambling to reach them.

"Many, many communities in our western mountains are completely isolated. There is no road access, no telephone information, no power, no water, no sewer," said Sheriff Joe Pelle of Boulder county.

At least four people have been killed, including a couple swept away in floodwaters after stopping their car northwest of Boulder.

Also killed was a resident whose body was found in a collapsed building near Jamestown, an evacuated enclave north of Boulder, and a man whose body was discovered during flood-watch patrols in Colorado Springs, officials said.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Some of the hardest-fought ballot battles of 2014 will not involve candidates at all. GovBeat: Washington’s legal marijuana law is actually two experiments in one

Aug 27 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Colorado might have been the first state to implement a recreational marijuana law, but Washington’s version may be the more-radical reform. As it establishes a new regulatory system for legal pot, Washington is also simultaneously setting up a system by which to measure it. In doing so, the state created two experiments, writes Philip Wallach, a Brookings Institution fellow in governance studies: One is in drug policy; the other is in how ...

Pat Robertson Suggests Teen Might Be Having Crushes On Boys Because He's Raised By A Single Mother

Aug 26 2014 3:28pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A lack of "male companions" could be causing a woman's teenage stepson to have crushes on other boys, at least according to Pat Robertson. The U.S. televangelist advised a "700 Club" viewer to find her 13-year-old stepson some male companions, as “his attraction is now toward other men because he’s raised by a woman,” Right Wing Watch first reported. “Before I did anything else, I would get him male companions. ...
