Pakistani Taliban demand release of prisoners

Sep 15 2013, 5:48pm CDT | by IANS

Islamabad, Sep 16 (IANS) Pakistani Taliban Sunday demanded the release of their prisoners and withdrawal of army from the country's restive tribal regions, which it says could be part of confidence building measures for the possible peace talks, Xinhua reported.

Islamabad, Sep 16 — Pakistani Taliban Sunday demanded the release of their prisoners and withdrawal of army from the country's restive tribal regions, which it says could be part of confidence building measures for the possible peace talks, Xinhua reported.

Taliban set conditions after a parliamentary conference, hosted by the government in Islamabad Sep 9, called upon the government to initiate dialogue with the militants.

Taliban spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid said the group would trust the government's powers and intention if the Taliban prisoners are freed and the troops are withdrawn from the tribal areas.

"The government should show sincerity and prove its powers ahead of peace talks," Shahid told the media.

He said a three-day meeting of the central council of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was held with the chief Hakimullah Mehsud in the chair, and asked the government to take such steps to build trust.

"We still doubt the government's powers and its sincerity. Talks will be useful when we realise that the government has powers," the spokesperson said.

"The governments in the past did not honour their promises to us and we do not want the same to be repeated again," Shahid said.

Political analysts are of the view that the government will not accept the Taliban demands unless the talks begin and make progress.

They are also surprised that on one hand the Taliban are making demands but on the other they have continued attacks on Pakistani forces.

They are of the opinion that conditions will make the peace process complicated.

Taliban's attack in the country's northwest area, which resulted into the killing of two senior officers, has prompted strong condemnation across the country.

Analysts also believe that such attacks could mount pressure on the government to review plan for talks with the Taliban.

Palestine Occupied by Islamism as Much as Israel

Jul 18 2014 1:31pm CDT | Source: Big Government

While Gazans, their Hamas leadership and pro-Palestinian supporters around the world condemn Israel's Operation Protective Edge, now turning into a ground invasion, its time Muslims examined the Other Occupation: the inexorable advance of political Islamism over Islam. Increasingly, Islam has been usurped by political Islamism, manifest in the current Israel–Palestine conflict as a war between Hamas and the Israel. Elsewhere, Islamism drive ...

Poll: Obama Hits Record Lows On Foreign Policy, Competence

Jun 18 2014 9:43am CDT | Source: Big Government

After a slight rebound last month in the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, President Obama is back to his previous overall job approval low of 41% (a drop of 3%) and hit record lows on his handling of foreign policy and overall competence. It's worth noting that this poll was taken before Obama's mishandling of Syria and the American withdrawal from Iraq allowed an al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group to make extraordinary territ ...

EU teaches West Africa how to Cheat, Plunder, Bully and Fish Unsustainably

Jun 17 2014 4:15am CDT | Source: Big Government

If ever you doubted that putting the European Union in charge of environmental issues is a bit like inviting the Taliban to run Miss World, consider this story by Richard North about the characteristic blend of bullying, incompetence, corruption, greed, high-handedness, dishonesty and ineffectuality with which the EU is policing the fishing grounds of West Africa. You'd think after the mess the EU had ...

Don't tell rapper/actor Ice Cube about the Taliban prisoner swap debacle, the missing IRS emails, the fact that Iraq is about to fall to jihadists or that the U.S. economy remains stuck in neutral. What's Happening in Pakistan?

Jun 13 2014 10:34am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For years, Pakistan has consistently renewed its international image as a country of grave concern, with not only its inability to halt the progress of terrorist and militant groups within the country but also its inability to provide basic needs of its own population. Far from offering any assurance that it can control the growing militancy of terror groups like the Pakistani Taliban, the government of Pakistan i ...
