UN General Assembly's 67th session concluded

Sep 16 2013, 4:36pm CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Sep 17 (IANS) The UN General Assembly concluded its 67th session Monday with progress being made on a number of international hotspots and development-related issues.

United Nations, Sep 17 — The UN General Assembly concluded its 67th session Monday with progress being made on a number of international hotspots and development-related issues.

"During this session, member states adopted close to 90 written and oral decisions, and around 300 resolutions," said Vuk Jeremic, president of the General Assembly's 67th session, in his closing remarks to the 193-member body as he outlined some of the highlights of the past year, Xinhua reported.

The session kicked off last September aiming at achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year of 2015 -- the eight ambitious targets set to slash hunger and poverty, maternal and infant mortality, a host of diseases and lack of access to education and health care.

The session also focused on peaceful resolutions of international conflicts, the situation in Syria, Middle East peace and other issues.

The 68th session of the General Assembly opens Tuesday and will be presided over by John William Ashe of Antigua and Barbuda.

Jeremic pointed out achievements of this assembly in such fields as the adoption of the first-ever arms trade treaty and the overwhelming vote of the member states to grant Palestine non-member observer state status to the UN.

Jeremic also noted "the most glaring failure" of the international family during the 67th session has been the ongoing tragedy of Syria.

"To end the fratricide, we've got to have high-level political dialogue. We need to bring the parties together, and make them talk to each other face to face," he said.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon thanked Jeremic for "the great dynamism" he brought to the job leading the General Assembly to deal with the challenges in the past eventful year.

"Over the past year, the General Assembly has realised a number of significant achievements across the range of issues that are on the General Assembly's agenda," Ban said during his remarks at the closing session.

"The 67th session coincided with a challenging period for the international community," said Ban. "The assembly stepped in when the Security Council was divided on Syria."

The UN chief also noted that member states had begun the hugely important discussions on the post-2015 development agenda and a new set of goals for sustainable development.

"I look forward to the capable stewardship of Ambassador John Ashe during the 68th session of the General Assembly to take this vital work forward, for the benefit of the people we are here to serve," he added.

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala — Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina agreed to review his country's strict policies that have prevented Americans from adopting impoverished children from here in a Wednesday meeting with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Paul told Breitbart News. “For years, there would be tens of thousands of kids who would be adopted each year in our country and it’s dwindled almost to nothing,” Paul said, recalling his message to Molina. If the recent adoption policy wer ...

The Changing Legal Standards for the War in Gaza

Aug 21 2014 9:06am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

No matter how appalling, the death of civilians during armed conflict does not in itself constitute a war crime. While the sin qua non of international humanitarian law is protecting human life, civilian casualties is a ghastly reality of war. Protecting the lives of civilians during conflict is measured against any advantage to be gained in military strikes. The paradox of Gaza is that Israel's Iron Dome defense sh ...

These Four Crises Are Stretching The World’s Aid Workers To The Breaking Point And Beyond

Aug 21 2014 8:22am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

South Sudanese take shelter in U.N. mission CREDIT: United Nations A World Health Organization official earlier this year declared that 2013 was the worst year that the international community had seen in more than sixty years. The three crises that were faced that year taxed the system almost more than it could bear. This year — with four crises labeled as the highest priority possible — is shaping up to be even worse, leaving aid o ...

The Fix: A rare sign of real economic confidence

Aug 21 2014 7:54am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

The economy has shown some signs of improvement, and Americans have taken notice of those signs -- at least to some extent. But most of the economic indicators we see today have only gotten modestly better over the past several months -- i.e. Americans don't exactly see the economy back in a safe place. And politically, the economy is hardly a success story for President Obama and his party (which will generally get cre ...

Report: UN Palestinian Refugee Body Under Complete Control of Hamas, Islamic Jihad

Aug 19 2014 3:53pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The UN Palestinian refugee body (UNRWA) is under the complete control of Gaza-based terror groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a Center For Near East Policy Research report concluded. The report, titled “The UNRWA-Hamas Axis,” said: Over the years, UNRWA has become a convenient surrogate for terrorist organizations, led by Hamas, which unrestrictedly dominates the UNRWA workers union, and its men — along with educators from the Islamic Jihad and other groups — are the ones who educate gen ...

UN World Humanitarian Day: How These Forces For Good Find Inspiration

Aug 19 2014 3:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Every year, thousands of aid workers around the world put their lives in danger daily to help people in need. Each finds his or her inspiration from a different place. U.N. Chief of Peacekeeping Operations Ken Payumo realized his work meant something when he stood between Sudanese government officials and refugees, stopping the probable harm of thousands. For UNICEF's Pernille Ironside, it was a 14-year-old Gazan girl who wish ...

How Detroit's Water Crisis Is Part Of A Much Bigger Problem

Aug 19 2014 2:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For the water department, it's a way to get delinquent customers to settle their tabs. For residents and activists, it's a serious issue when the city's poorest, including children, are made to live without running water in their home. A group of United Nations experts cal ...

Giving Migrant Families a Reason to Stay Home

Aug 19 2014 2:23pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a Mexican immigrant to the U.S., raised in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, I grew up witnessing the lure of America. As a father, I can understand the desperation that would compel a parent to risk his child's life for the promise of a better future. Yet I am appalled and heartsick that 57,000 children have migrated with no parent or guardian, apprehended at the U.S. border since last October. Statistics ...
