Need more funds for Syria: UN chief

Sep 18 2013, 3:06am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Sep 18 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for global efforts to make up for the huge shortfall in funding for the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

United Nations, Sep 18 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for global efforts to make up for the huge shortfall in funding for the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Addressing the 68th session of the UN General Assembly Tuesday, he warned thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon could face reductions in vital food aid, reports Xinhua.

"We have raised just 40 percent of the $4.4 billion needed for Syria and neighbouring countries for this year," Ban said at the session.

He called on governments to help meet this "unprecedented crisis" while still meeting their commitments to other emergencies.

The number of Syrian refugees has reached two million and the figure is expected to rise to 3.5 million at the end of this year, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said.

More than 100,000 Syrians have been reportedly killed, over two million have fled to neighbouring countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey since the beginning of the political crisis and conflict in the Middle East country in March 2011.

Ban called the situation "desperate" in his briefing largely devoted to the findings of a UN report that Sarin gas was used in a chemical attack that reportedly killed hundreds of people on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian capital, Aug 21.

Outlining the severe consequences of the funding shortfall, UN agencies called for greater generosity to avert a cutback in food aid next month for thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, where $127 million still needs to be raised.

Nearly 720,000 Syrians have so far poured into Lebanon, while funding for Lebanon is only 27 percent covered, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Melissa Fleming told a news briefing in Geneva, citing the needs of the UN World Food Program.

Protect the Future of Peacekeeping

Nov 4 2014 8:38am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On a Friday in early October -- amid a flood of news on ISIL and an escalating Ebola crisis -- it might have been easy to miss this headline: Nine United Nations Peacekeepers were ambushed and killed by gunmen in Mali. Less than a week later, another Peacekeeper in Mali was killed in a rocket attack. However, much as these tragedies may seem part of peacekeeping's inherent risks, they were more than just a couple stories amid a ...

UN Climate Change Report Delivers Stark Warnings

Nov 2 2014 6:35am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday. The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment didn't offer any surprises, nor was it expected ...

We Must Not Even Think of Accusing Leonardo DiCaprio of Hypocrisy

Nov 1 2014 3:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Friday’s crash of the Virgin Galactic space-plane in California was, of course, a tragedy: One test-pilot was killed, and another seriously injured.  But there is, at least, a silver lining: There’s no need to worry about another possible issue concerning Richard Branson’s spaceflight venture—namely, that all those internal-combustion-powered flights would contribute to the dread danger of climate change.   Indeed, to the untrained eye and the un ...

(Israel Hayom) U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited southern Israel and the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and told both sides what they wanted to hear.
