Need more funds for Syria: UN chief

Sep 18 2013, 3:06am CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Sep 18 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for global efforts to make up for the huge shortfall in funding for the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

United Nations, Sep 18 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for global efforts to make up for the huge shortfall in funding for the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Addressing the 68th session of the UN General Assembly Tuesday, he warned thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon could face reductions in vital food aid, reports Xinhua.

"We have raised just 40 percent of the $4.4 billion needed for Syria and neighbouring countries for this year," Ban said at the session.

He called on governments to help meet this "unprecedented crisis" while still meeting their commitments to other emergencies.

The number of Syrian refugees has reached two million and the figure is expected to rise to 3.5 million at the end of this year, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said.

More than 100,000 Syrians have been reportedly killed, over two million have fled to neighbouring countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey since the beginning of the political crisis and conflict in the Middle East country in March 2011.

Ban called the situation "desperate" in his briefing largely devoted to the findings of a UN report that Sarin gas was used in a chemical attack that reportedly killed hundreds of people on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian capital, Aug 21.

Outlining the severe consequences of the funding shortfall, UN agencies called for greater generosity to avert a cutback in food aid next month for thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, where $127 million still needs to be raised.

Nearly 720,000 Syrians have so far poured into Lebanon, while funding for Lebanon is only 27 percent covered, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Melissa Fleming told a news briefing in Geneva, citing the needs of the UN World Food Program.

Does No One Care About the Plight of 'Drowning' Samoa? Apparently Not...

Aug 30 2014 7:29am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Prime Minister of Samoa has launched a heartfelt plea in the Guardian newspaper on behalf of his allegedly drowning Pacific nation. (H/T Bufo 75) Unless concerted international action is taken to deal with the threat of 'climate change', apparently, small islands like his will be "inundated by rising sea levels." Tragically, it looks as if this request by the splendidly named Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Maliele ...

International Day Against Nuclear Tests (August 29) is a call to action for the U.S. Senate. They have some unfinished business. It's time to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The treaty bans all nuclear test explosions. It's a bridge to nuclear disarmament that we must cross. If we don't, we are not going to make any further progress in this vital component of international peace. As UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says, "Together, let us ...

Killer App in Jerusalem

Jerusalem -- I can't sleep at night. It's not because of the rockets, although Israel is under constant rocket fire. And it's not because of iron dome, although it makes loud booms. The other night at our Jerusalem hotel our six-year old daughter was awoken by the sound of the alarms as a Kassam rocket headed toward the capital. She was frightened. Her older sisters calmed her. They ran to a shelter. Iron dome made ...

Editor’s note: Chuck Norris’ weekly political column debuts each Monday in WND and is then syndicated by Creators News Service for publication elsewhere. His column in WND often runs hundreds of words longer than the subsequent release to other media. Pundits and news agencies have reported and questioned the validity that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, is beheading children in its conquests of Syria and Iraq.
