Obama open to direct talks with Iran

Sep 19 2013, 11:48pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 20 (IANS) With the White house saying that President Barack Obama is open to direct talks with Iran, speculation has grown that he and the new Iranian President Hassan Rohani may meet at the UN next week.

Washington, Sep 20 — With the White house saying that President Barack Obama is open to direct talks with Iran, speculation has grown that he and the new Iranian President Hassan Rohani may meet at the UN next week.

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters Thursday that no meeting is scheduled between the two leaders, but he also underscored that Obama "has been open as a general proposition to bilateral discussions with the Iranians."

The president, Carney told reporters, has found Rouhani's rhetoric in his first weeks in office encouraging, but "actions are more important than words."

"We are all watching very closely and with interest and listening closely and with interest to the things that the new leadership has been saying," he said.

When Obama first ran for president in 2008, he said he would hold direct negotiations with Iran under certain conditions. Carney said Obama still holds that position.

Obama, according to Carney, would be willing to have bilateral negotiations provided the Iranians were serious about addressing the international community's insistence that Tehran give up its nuclear weapons programme.

"That is the position we hold today," Carney said.

No US president has met a top Iranian leader since the overthrow of the pro-American Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi more than 34 years ago.

But Obama and Rouhani have confirmed that they've exchanged letters since the new Iranian leader took office.

In an interview this week with the Spanish-language network Telemundo, Obama said he indicated his interest in seeing Iran address US concerns about Iran's nuclear programme "in a way that would allow Iran to rejoin the international community."

Meanwhile, Rouhani, who denies that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons, told NBC News earlier this week that he received a "positive and constructive" letter from Obama after the recent Iranian election, and it could augur "subtle and tiny steps for a very important future."

Rouhani also asserted in the interview that he has complete authority to negotiate with the United States on its nuclear programme.

6 Times Obama Declared Crisis, Then Did Nothing

Oct 20 2014 1:37pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Last week, President Obama finally began taking Ebola seriously – so seriously that he cancelled a campaign trip in order to hold an emergency meeting on Ebola. He then appointed a new Ebola czar, Ron Klain, whose stellar qualifications for handling a possible Ebola outbreak include flacking for Janet Reno, Al Gore, and Joe Biden. Finally, Obama held another Ebola meeting after going golfing. Klain skipped the meeting. It was the second such meeting Klain skipped. Don’t ...

Carney: 'No Question' It Will Be A Good Year for GOP, Bad Year for Dems

Oct 10 2014 9:03am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Thursday’s broadcast of “CNN Tonight,” former White House press secretary Jay Carney, now a CNN contributor, warned that his party is facing a bad election year with the midterm elections under a month away. “I think the Democratic candidates have to sort of thread this needle very carefully because it is true that when you have an unpopular president of your party, you don’t want to be associated with him. You know, your opponents are running ads linking him to you so you want ...

Why the Obama Administration is Unable to Defend Itself on the Issue of a Residual Force in Iraq

Oct 3 2014 2:08pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Could the rise of ISIS in Iraq have been prevented if the U.S. had left troops in the country in 2011? That question has been a subject of debate in Washington for years. So why do members of the Obama administration seem so utterly unprepared to discuss it? Last night State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki agreed to discuss it with Megyn Kelly and her apparent lack of preparation cost her. The interview was a bloodbath. Not the kind of fake victory that John Oliver a ...
