World must facilitate peaceful Syria solution: Putin

Sep 20 2013, 6:54am CDT | by IANS

Moscow, Sep 20 (IANS) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the rival sides in Syria should find a peaceful way out of the crisis through mediation by the international community.

Moscow, Sep 20 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the rival sides in Syria should find a peaceful way out of the crisis through mediation by the international community.

"No matter how difficult it is, we should find points of contact, facilitate their reaching agreements, find a balance of interests," Xinhua quoted Putin as saying Thursday at the Valdai International Club, a forum that debates on Russia and its role in the world.

"Then the situation in the country might stabilise for sometime and perhaps even improve," he added.

Putin pointed out that the West had ignored similar Russian proposals when the NATO-led coalition was preparing for operations in Iraq.

Putin noted that ignoring Russian warnings has led to the Iraqis suffering till date.

He also took the situation in Libya as another example of the consequences of an ill-planned foreign intervention in a country's domestic conflict.

"I am not saying that there was a correct and balanced regime (in Libya). (Muammar) Gaddafi devised his own political theory and it does not mean that it was right to apply it (to Libya) for another hundred years," the Russian president said.

"But the methods that were used to sort out this problem failed and are highly likely to fail in the future," he said.

Last weekend, Washington and Moscow struck a deal to place Syrian chemical arms under international control in a bid to avert a US military strike on the embattled Middle Eastern country.

But in subsequent days, the US and Russia have been at odds over the agreement's enforcement.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had Monday dismissed calls for a UN resolution authorising military force against Syria if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad failed to comply with plans to secure chemical weapons, arguing that such an appeal amounted to a "lack of understanding" of the plan.

Obama's Fighting A New Kind Of War -- While Critics Are Stuck in the Past

Oct 21 2014 1:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Critics of Obama's war strategy seem to want him to fight a new kind of war with old weapons. As I described last time, they judge success and failure by traditional measures -- in particular, by who controls how much ground. But in a new kind of war -- counterinsurgency -- such measures don't always apply, at least not in the same way. Think about all the anxiety over how much territory ISIS currently holds, and the calls f ...

ISIS, Ukraine, the South China Sea and the End of the Era of American Power

Oct 20 2014 12:53am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A colleague called me during the run-up to the Iraq war in March 2003. It is going to be unlike anything the world has ever seen. Shock and Awe. The war will be over before it starts. An inside player in the Bush administration, he was in a position to know what was in store. Shock and Awe is a the military doctrine that "focuses on the psychological destruction of the enemy's will to fight rather than the physical destruction of its military forces." To the Bush ...

Warsaw Has Lots of Apples - and Candles

Oct 10 2014 6:25am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WARSAW -- People in Poland are eating apples these days. Lots of apples. Here in Warsaw, they're pressed into your hands at a street festival, or baked into piles of pies and cakes. You see them everywhere. It's an act of defiance. Moscow has banned the importing of fruits and vegetables to Russia, in retaliation for the West's sanctions against the country for supporting the separatists in Ukraine. Last year, Poland sold more than ...

Obama’s New Oil Wars

Oct 9 2014 8:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Washington Takes on ISIS, Iran, and Russia Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com It was heinous. It was underhanded.  It was beyond the bounds of international morality. It was an attack on the American way of life.  It was what you might expect from unscrupulous Arabs.  It was “the oil weapon” -- and back in 1973, it was directed at the United States. Skip ahead four decades and it’s smart, it’s effective, and i ...
