World must facilitate peaceful Syria solution: Putin

Sep 20 2013, 6:54am CDT | by IANS

Moscow, Sep 20 (IANS) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the rival sides in Syria should find a peaceful way out of the crisis through mediation by the international community.

Moscow, Sep 20 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the rival sides in Syria should find a peaceful way out of the crisis through mediation by the international community.

"No matter how difficult it is, we should find points of contact, facilitate their reaching agreements, find a balance of interests," Xinhua quoted Putin as saying Thursday at the Valdai International Club, a forum that debates on Russia and its role in the world.

"Then the situation in the country might stabilise for sometime and perhaps even improve," he added.

Putin pointed out that the West had ignored similar Russian proposals when the NATO-led coalition was preparing for operations in Iraq.

Putin noted that ignoring Russian warnings has led to the Iraqis suffering till date.

He also took the situation in Libya as another example of the consequences of an ill-planned foreign intervention in a country's domestic conflict.

"I am not saying that there was a correct and balanced regime (in Libya). (Muammar) Gaddafi devised his own political theory and it does not mean that it was right to apply it (to Libya) for another hundred years," the Russian president said.

"But the methods that were used to sort out this problem failed and are highly likely to fail in the future," he said.

Last weekend, Washington and Moscow struck a deal to place Syrian chemical arms under international control in a bid to avert a US military strike on the embattled Middle Eastern country.

But in subsequent days, the US and Russia have been at odds over the agreement's enforcement.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had Monday dismissed calls for a UN resolution authorising military force against Syria if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad failed to comply with plans to secure chemical weapons, arguing that such an appeal amounted to a "lack of understanding" of the plan.

Best ISIS strategy: Nuke 'em

Sep 19 2014 6:36pm CDT | Source: WND

With near unanimity among experts in warfare, President Barack Hussein Obama’s “strategy” to defeat ISIS is a sham that is designed to lose. While the “Muslim in Chief’s” motivation to fail can be attributed in part to his Islamic heritage, Obama’s professed method of combat is strangely reminiscent of President George W. Bush’s initial strategy after Sept. 11, 2001. In the weeks following the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the P ...

More unlawful presidential killing

Sep 17 2014 6:29pm CDT | Source: WND

As the debate rages over whether the president needs congressional authorization for war prior to his deployment of the military to degrade or destroy ISIS, the terrorist organization that none of us had heard about until a few months ago, the nation has lost sight of the more fundamental issue of President Obama’s infidelity to the rule of law. On the lawfulness of his proposed war, the president has painted himself into a corner. Last year, he quite pr ...

The 'Good' Iraq War? 5 Things to Consider Before We March Into Another Mideast Quagmire

Sep 16 2014 7:09pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

ISIS is a bad bunch. A deliberately macabre and diabolical death cult. Their shock and horror strategy fuels fear in their subjects, and pride in their growing band of messianic losers, freaks and disaffected Ba'athists (thank you, Douglas Feith). However, in many ways, they are no different than other marauding bands of bad guys around the planet: from Uganda's (now possibly Congo's) Acholi-Christian-Islamic ...

What would Braveheart do?

Sep 15 2014 7:27pm CDT | Source: WND

No matter how the vote turns out on Thursday in Scotland, either for independence or continued union with Britain, the disintegration of the Old Continent appears almost inevitable. Already the British government has conceded that, even if the Scots vote for union, Edinburgh will receive greater powers to rule itself. Cheering for the breakup of the U.K. are Catalans and Basques, Bretons and Corsicans, Tyroleans, Venetians, Flemish, all dreaming of nations of t ...

Saudis drop idea of toppling Syrian regime

Sep 14 2014 7:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Syria’s Bashar al-Assad WASHINGTON – The Saudis are telling Russia they no longer seek to topple the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, but insist they should continue arming and training their surrogates in the Free Syrian Army as opposition to ISIS – even though FSA commanders have signed a non-aggression pact with ISIS. Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal reportedly gave the news to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a st ...

Obama Ditches Presidency to Become Commentator-in-Chief

Sep 14 2014 3:09pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Sunday, The New York Times revealed that President Obama seems to be feeling criticism from those who believe his foreign policy has fallen to shambles. “He’s definitely feeling it,” one guest said to the Times. The paper reported, “It was clear to guests how aware Mr. Obama was of the critics who have charged him with demonstrating a lack of leadership. He brought up the criticism more than once with an edge of resen ...

Obama's Last Chance to Control His Credibility

Sep 11 2014 7:52pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama has a precious opportunity to carve out a legacy for himself and carry out a coup against the reputation of weakness, repudiation and retreat that has dogged and haunted him. The Islamic State (IS) had invited the U.S. president to a war, which has opened a window for Barack Obama to shape his own fate rather than leaving his historical political legacy in the hands of others. If he shows boldness and ac ...
