World must facilitate peaceful Syria solution: Putin

Sep 20 2013, 6:54am CDT | by IANS

Moscow, Sep 20 (IANS) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the rival sides in Syria should find a peaceful way out of the crisis through mediation by the international community.

Moscow, Sep 20 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the rival sides in Syria should find a peaceful way out of the crisis through mediation by the international community.

"No matter how difficult it is, we should find points of contact, facilitate their reaching agreements, find a balance of interests," Xinhua quoted Putin as saying Thursday at the Valdai International Club, a forum that debates on Russia and its role in the world.

"Then the situation in the country might stabilise for sometime and perhaps even improve," he added.

Putin pointed out that the West had ignored similar Russian proposals when the NATO-led coalition was preparing for operations in Iraq.

Putin noted that ignoring Russian warnings has led to the Iraqis suffering till date.

He also took the situation in Libya as another example of the consequences of an ill-planned foreign intervention in a country's domestic conflict.

"I am not saying that there was a correct and balanced regime (in Libya). (Muammar) Gaddafi devised his own political theory and it does not mean that it was right to apply it (to Libya) for another hundred years," the Russian president said.

"But the methods that were used to sort out this problem failed and are highly likely to fail in the future," he said.

Last weekend, Washington and Moscow struck a deal to place Syrian chemical arms under international control in a bid to avert a US military strike on the embattled Middle Eastern country.

But in subsequent days, the US and Russia have been at odds over the agreement's enforcement.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had Monday dismissed calls for a UN resolution authorising military force against Syria if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad failed to comply with plans to secure chemical weapons, arguing that such an appeal amounted to a "lack of understanding" of the plan.

The Perils of Obama's Vacillating Strategy Toward ISIS

Aug 20 2014 9:21am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Although turmoil in the Middle East long predates President Obama, his strategy of conciliation and retrenchment has made matters considerably worse. Obama remains obtuse to the threat radical Islamists pose: that includes the Shiite theocracy in Iran bent on crossing the nuclear threshold, the virulently anti-American Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, radicals in Libya who attacked the American embassy, Boko Haram in Africa, an increasing ...

Aug 19 2014 6:11pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Speaking to Barack Obama's tenure in office today, Mitt Romney said “It’s been a good deal worse than even I expected. I was not a big fan of the president’s policies, as you know, either domestically or internationally. But the results of his mistakes and errors, in my opinion, have been more severe than even I would have predicted.” On the stump with fellow Republicans in West Virginia, Romney cited "unrest in the Ukraine, the rise of the Islamic State ...

This week in stupid: Edward Snowden

Aug 15 2014 11:07am CDT | Source: Big Government

Props to WIRED magazine for getting the interview everyone wanted: a full-length on the record with Edward Snowden from his Russian hideout. But that cover! Oh, that cover. The full image has to be seen to be believed. It would have been a provocative sight were Snowden not so comically dorky-looking. And, you know, a traitor.  With the possible exception of Snowden's media accomplice, Glenn Greenwald, I'm not sure any public figure is so ostentatiously fond of the ...

Isis Crisis: Obama's Flawed Strategy, Hillary's Farfetched Excuse

Aug 14 2014 6:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Well, isn't that reassuring? President Barack Obama and his famous former secretary of state, once and probably future presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton, made nice Wednesday night at a chi chi Martha's Vineyard party and seemingly put an end to their blame game over responsibility for the alarming rise of Isis and the shattering of the colonial construct we call "Iraq." In an expansive interview ...
