Obama to focus on Middle East, meeting leaders at UN

Sep 20 2013, 6:00pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 21 (IANS) US President Barack Obama is to meet Palestinian, Nigerian and Lebanese leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week, the White House said Friday, adding the focus of his address to the assembly will be on the Middle East.

Washington, Sep 21 — US President Barack Obama is to meet Palestinian, Nigerian and Lebanese leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week, the White House said Friday, adding the focus of his address to the assembly will be on the Middle East.

Besides his meetings with a number of global leaders, Obama will also urge the international society to stand strongly against the use of chemical weapons, calling on the Security Council to adopt a resolution on Syrian chemical weapons, Xinhua reported.

According to White House Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes, President Obama will talk in New York Tuesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the recently relaunched peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

The president will meet with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Monday and with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman separately Tuesday to discuss the influx of Syrian refugees to Lebanon, Rhodes said in a preview of Obama's UN trip.

The US president is to focus his address to the General Assembly on the Middle East and North Africa, laying out the US approach and policy forward, the White House official added.

The White House also said Obama would talk about the Middle East peace process and the Iran nuclear issue, adding that he would urge a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue through diplomacy.

Rhodes said the administration believes there was a window of opportunity to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue diplomatically, but warned that recent willingness displayed by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was not enough.

Earlier in the day, Josh Earnest, deputy White House spokesman, said US officials "have had a number of engagements with the Iranians and we'll continue to have conversations on the basis of mutual respect".

Sweden Becomes First European Union Nation to Recognize Palestinian Statehood

Oct 6 2014 1:36pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Friday, Sweden -- a nation that took a stance of neutrality during World War II, which was defined by the Holocaust and resulted in the extermination of 6 million Jewish people -- said it recognized Palestinian statehood, making it the first major European country to do so. "A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful co-existence. Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palest ...

The Israel Sermon Rabbis Should Dare to Deliver ...

Oct 2 2014 2:03pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The New York Times on September 22, claims that rabbis have a hard time speaking to their congregants about Israel these days. Really? Is it that difficult to talk about Israel in the same multidimensional, sophisticated, loving yet critical way we talk about America? Here's one way to do it.... My friends, reports claim that, increasingly, rabbis fear talking about Israel to their congregations. Let me be clear: not thi ...

How Hamas Can Claim Victory After Operation Protective Edge

Sep 25 2014 12:08pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Last month, following a 50-day war, Israel and the terrorist group Hamas reached a truce. Even though the Palestinians in Gaza claimed a death toll of over 2,100 people, nearly 500,000 displaced persons and rubble lining the streets where buildings used to be, Palestinians filled the streets of Gaza in celebration as Hamas leaders are declaring victory over Israel.  With so much death and destruction, how is it possible that Hamas can claim victory? It is actually quite simple.  Hamas can dec ...

A New U.S. Strategy for the Aftermath of the Gaza War

Sep 4 2014 7:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Israel and Hamas engaged in one of the longest wars in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict this summer. The fundamental problem, which caused the war and all its destruction, is that Hamas is a terrorist organization whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel, and praises "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," and claims among many other fiendish accusations that Jews started World Wars I and II. The Bush administration erred grievousl ...

What Makes Obama Angry

Sep 2 2014 8:35pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In response to Obama is the man who doesn't WANT to have a plan: Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron strongly condemned ISIS, calling their latest atrocity - the beheading of journalist Steven Sotloff -   ‘an absolutely disgusting and despicable act’. He said he will chair a COBR meeting on the threat to a UK citizen tomorrow, and added: ‘My thoughts and prayers are with Mr Sotloff’s family and friends tonight as they deal with this appalling and tragic ...
