Obama to focus on Middle East, meeting leaders at UN

Sep 20 2013, 6:00pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 21 (IANS) US President Barack Obama is to meet Palestinian, Nigerian and Lebanese leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week, the White House said Friday, adding the focus of his address to the assembly will be on the Middle East.

Washington, Sep 21 — US President Barack Obama is to meet Palestinian, Nigerian and Lebanese leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly next week, the White House said Friday, adding the focus of his address to the assembly will be on the Middle East.

Besides his meetings with a number of global leaders, Obama will also urge the international society to stand strongly against the use of chemical weapons, calling on the Security Council to adopt a resolution on Syrian chemical weapons, Xinhua reported.

According to White House Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes, President Obama will talk in New York Tuesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the recently relaunched peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

The president will meet with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Monday and with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman separately Tuesday to discuss the influx of Syrian refugees to Lebanon, Rhodes said in a preview of Obama's UN trip.

The US president is to focus his address to the General Assembly on the Middle East and North Africa, laying out the US approach and policy forward, the White House official added.

The White House also said Obama would talk about the Middle East peace process and the Iran nuclear issue, adding that he would urge a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue through diplomacy.

Rhodes said the administration believes there was a window of opportunity to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue diplomatically, but warned that recent willingness displayed by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was not enough.

Earlier in the day, Josh Earnest, deputy White House spokesman, said US officials "have had a number of engagements with the Iranians and we'll continue to have conversations on the basis of mutual respect".

What Makes Obama Angry

Sep 2 2014 8:35pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In response to Obama is the man who doesn't WANT to have a plan: Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron strongly condemned ISIS, calling their latest atrocity - the beheading of journalist Steven Sotloff -   ‘an absolutely disgusting and despicable act’. He said he will chair a COBR meeting on the threat to a UK citizen tomorrow, and added: ‘My thoughts and prayers are with Mr Sotloff’s family and friends tonight as they deal with this appalling and tragic situat ...

Gaza Is a Pandora's Box for Netanyahu

Aug 22 2014 12:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Had Benyamin Netanyahu decided not to use the pretext of three murdered settler youths to launch a pogrom against Hamas in the West Bank and then attack Gaza, much of what Israel considers useful in the status quo would have been allowed to fester. The Fatah-Hamas unity government would have been unity in name only, lurching from one crisis to another, with Mahmoud Abbas acting as the senior partner. The salaries of 50,000 ...

Senior Fatah Source: Qatar Pushed Hamas to Break Ceasefire

Aug 20 2014 9:18am CDT | Source: Big Government

Why did the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas suddenly break down on Tuesday, even before its expiration? Why would Hamas, in the middle of negotiations and without pretense of provocation, fire rocket barrages against Israel? According to Israel National News, "A senior member of Palestnian [sic] Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction said Wednesday Hamas's choice to forego the Egyptian truce proposal and ...

Deadly Israeli Airstrikes Strike Gaza Amid Hail Of Rocket Fire

Aug 20 2014 7:31am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian militants launched dozens of rockets and Israel responded with airstrikes on Wednesday after Egyptian efforts to mediate a lasting truce in the monthlong Gaza war collapsed in a hail of fire a day earlier. Blown Chances in Gaza

Aug 12 2014 8:13am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Israel and the U.S. Miss Many Chances to Avoid War Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com Alongside the toll of death and broken lives, perhaps the saddest reality of the latest Gaza war, like the Gaza wars before it, is how easy it would have been to avoid. For the last eight years, Israel and the U.S. had repeated opportunities to opt for a diplomatic solution in Gaza. Each time, they have chosen war, with devastating consequences for the families of Gaza. Let’s begin in June 2006, when the Univ ...

Israel Can't Afford to Lose Jews Like Me

Aug 11 2014 11:04am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Writing in The New York Times, columnist Shmuel Rosner labeled non-Israeli liberal Jews who are becoming more estranged from modern-day Israel as "fair-weather fans" whom Israel both can and should ignore. He is dead-wrong on both counts. I am far from the most liberal Jew in America, but I am in the camp of Jews whom Rosner is criticizing, Jews who have traditionally supported Israel but in recent years are feeling less and less comfortable doing so due to Israeli policy. Th ...

Getting Money in Gaza: An Interview With Palestine's Central Banker

Aug 9 2014 3:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Amidst the destruction and death in Gaza, the Palestine Monetary Authority has kept cash flowing to a besieged population struggling to survive in a devastated economy. Gaza's 45 bank branches have been mostly closed during the nearly month-long conflict, with working ATMs depending on the availability of generator fuel and the daring of bank staff to maintain them. "Crisis management is key to our survival," said Jihad al-Wazir, governor of the auth ...

Why It Will Be So Hard To Rebuild Gaza's Devastated Landscape

Aug 8 2014 3:50pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas have left whole neighborhoods in the Gaza Strip in ruins and critically damaged basic infrastructure. According to the United Nations, around 10,000 buildings have been destroyed or smashed beyond repair, leaving some 65,000 people homeless. U.N. satellite imagery of several neighborhoods before and after shelling raises the question: How is Gaza going to rebuild this dev ...
