Germany goes to polls

Sep 22 2013, 5:41am CDT | by IANS

Berlin, Sep 22 (IANS) Germans began voting Sunday morning for the parliamentary elections to decide who will run Europe's largest economy for the next four years.

Berlin, Sep 22 — Germans began voting Sunday morning for the parliamentary elections to decide who will run Europe's largest economy for the next four years.

About 80,000 polling stations set in schools and other public buildings opened at 8 a.m. (7 a.m. GMT).

Another 10,000 stations will receive postal voting until 6 p.m. (5 p.m. GMT).

Some 61.8 million voters are eligible to seal the fate of contenders, and 34 parties are competing for seats in the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament.

The ruling coalition comprising incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), its Bavarian sister party Christian Social Union (CSU) and the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP) is being challenged by the centre-Left Social Democrats (SPD) and its partner the Greens.

In recent polls, the CDU/CSU union was in a leading position. Its partner FDP was wiggling around the five percent threshold to enter parliament.

"The election is very important for Germany's future," said a woman voter at a ballot station in southeast Berlin where German President Joachim Gauck was scheduled to cast his ballot at 9.30 a.m. local time (8.30 a.m. GMT).

Each voter could cast two ballots: the first for a constituency candidate to represent his constituency in parliament, the second for a party.

Half of the 598 parliament seats would be decided by the first ballots, while each party's overall seats in parliament would be allocated according to the share obtained in the second ballot.

A ruling party or coalition needs a majority of seats in the legislature.

Merkel is scheduled to cast her ballot in central Berlin at 1:30 p.m. local.

Her main rival, SPD chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrueck cast his vote at 9.30 a.m. in Bonn.

Exit poll results by research institutes are expected to be published shortly after the closure of ballot stations at 6 p.m.

The official provisional results would be released early Monday morning.

For months, the parties have been carrying out election campaigns.

A massive billboard of over 1,000 sq m featuring incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel has been installed at Berlin's main railway station.

Another poster beside read, "Germany's future in good hands".

NATO Spying Controversy Continues as Germany Spies on U.S. Sec of State

Aug 18 2014 11:34am CDT | Source: Big Government

Trust in the NATO alliance has been further eroded after the Der Spiegel newspaper revealed that Germany has intercepted telephone calls made by US Secretary of State John Kerry, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and NATO ally Turkey. Although a security service source has insisted the calls by Kerry and Clinton were intercepted by mistake in the course of otherwise ordinary security work, this news comes only a month after Germany expe ...

Ukraine Exposes Globalism's Flawed Premise

Aug 14 2014 7:28pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The crisis in Ukraine has done more than expose weaknesses in regional security and international air safety arrangements. It has exposed fundamental flaws in the bedrock assumptions underlying that secular faith known as globalization. George Ball, liberal State Department and Wall Street apparatchik, stated the first axiom of globalism in his infamous 1967 testimony to a congressional Joint Economic Committee ...

Merkel's girdle and other unmentionables

Jul 24 2014 6:53pm CDT | Source: WND

I realize that conservatives like to take potshots at Obama over his constantly flying off to engage in fundraising events. Heck, I enjoy taking those potshots as much as anyone. In fact, some days it’s the only exercise I get. But we should always engage in fair play. In that spirit, I must ask, channeling my inner Hillary, what difference, at this point, does it make where he is? After all, he needn’t be in the Oval Office or in the White House Rose Garden to say, “I can’t comment ...

5 Ways The U.S. Could Rebuke Russia If It Played A Role In The Malaysian Plane Crash

Jul 21 2014 12:54pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Russian President Vladimir Putin CREDIT: AP Photo/RIA-Novosti, Alexei Nikolsky, Presidential Press Service For days now, the United States has been building the case against Russia’s claims that it had nothing to do with last weeks downing of a Malaysian passenger jet over Ukraine. But any slim chance that Moscow would voluntarily admit that it played a role in the MH17 crash seemed to vanish on Monday, as the Russian Defen ...
