Hillary Clinton wrestling with White House run

Sep 23 2013, 11:30pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 24 (IANS) Not long ago, Hillary Clinton had "absolutely no plans to run" for the White House in 2016. Now she is "wrestling" with the idea, but is in no hurry to decide as it's a decision "not to be made lightly."

Washington, Sep 24 — Not long ago, Hillary Clinton had "absolutely no plans to run" for the White House in 2016. Now she is "wrestling" with the idea, but is in no hurry to decide as it's a decision "not to be made lightly."

A possible White House run by the former Secretary of State and First Lady, whom polls put as the leading contender Democratic nomination, has become a topic of renewed speculation with the publication of an interview by New York magazine.

In her first interview since leaving the State Department, asked by the magazine whether she wrestles with the idea of a possible run, Clinton replied "I do, but I'm both pragmatic and realistic."

"I think I have a pretty good idea of the political and governmental challenges that are facing our leaders, and I'll do whatever I can from whatever position I find myself in to advocate for the values and the policies I think are right for the country," she said.

"I will just continue to weigh what the factors are that would influence me making a decision one way or the other," said Clinton, who started out as a leading contender for Democratic nomination in 2008 too, but narrowly lost out to then Senator Barack Obama.

But "I'm not in any hurry. I think it's a serious decision, not to be made lightly, but it's also not one that has to be made soon," she said. "This election is more than three years away, and I just don't think it's good for the country."

"It's like when you meet somebody at a party and they look over your shoulder to see who else is there, and you want to talk to them about something that's really important; in fact, maybe you came to the party to talk to that particular person, and they just want to know what's next. I feel like that's our political process right now. I just don't think it is good."

Some of Clinton's closest confidants insist she will run, even if she hasn't realized it yet, according to the magazine. Of Clinton's failed 2008 bid, her aide Melanne Verveer told the magazine, "She doesn't repeat her mistakes."

Clinton also told the magazine that after many years, she and her husband Bill Clinton were enjoying their "ordinary" life together.

"We get to be at home together a lot more now than we used to in the last few years. We have a great time; we laugh at our dogs; we watch stupid movies; we take long walks; we go for a swim. You know just ordinary, everyday pleasures," she was quoted as saying.

A Republican Midterm Wave Will Further Sink Black America

Oct 31 2014 2:54pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

GOP pundits and some in the media gleefully noted that a few African-American listeners purportedly walked out on President Obama during a campaign speech he made at a Maryland high school on October 19 to boost the candidacy of Maryland gubernatorial Democrat candidate Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. Brown is in a bid to become the nation's second African-American governor. This was more than merely an excuse to poke fun at Obama. The point is that supposedly many African-Americans are so t ...

In the Loop: Let the 2016 Iowa Caucus coverage begin

Oct 31 2014 2:44pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

We’re now several days away from the 2014 midterm election, but let’s all be honest, the political focus has been on 2016 all along, right? There’s no denying that 2016 handicapping began the moment President Obama secured his second term in 2012. Since then it’s been a constant stream of will Hillary Clinton run? Who would dare take her on? Joe Biden? Will Jeb Bush’s family let him run? What about Chris Christie’s temperament? And Thursday, the first 2016 presid ...

CREDIT: Andrew Breiner PIKEVILLE, KENTUCKY — “Mitch McConnell never mentions coal miners,” said Charles Tipton, speaking forcefully between deep breaths through a tracheostomy tube. “It’s the coal industry he’s interested in … And he can’t get money from the coal operators if he’s gonna vote for the workers to have anything.” Tipton, 65, was a coal miner for 22 years, and worked on the railroads f ...

Hillary Clinton Jobs Remark Makes Cameo In House Debate

Oct 31 2014 9:59am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Hillary Clinton's comment that businesses don't create jobs made a cameo in a House debate Thursday evening. Republican Rick Allen, who owns a construction company, attacked incumbent Rep. John Barrow's (D-Ga.) record by invoking the former secretary of state and President Barack Obama. "I mean I know that our president and Mrs. Clinton have both said that businesses don't create jobs. But, you know what -- they do. An ...

It's Up to Us on November 4th: The 2014 Elections and Beyond

Oct 31 2014 9:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

While the pundits and pollsters are predicting a Republican takeover of the Senate, it would be wise to take their prognostications with a grain of salt and not let them become a self-fulfilling prophesy. After all, even those so-called "experts" are not infallible. They didn't see the coming tsunami of the Tea Party in 2010 that swept into the House and effectively took control of DC. The Demo ...

Why a GOP Senate May Be Short-lived

Oct 31 2014 4:35am CDT | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

Politico: "After two years of obsessive focus on the teetering reelection prospects of red-state Democrats, the attention is about to shift in a major way to blue-state Republicans. Six of them who rode anti-Obama sentiment to office in 2010 are up in two years, and they'll face the dual challenge of a more diverse electorate and potentially Hillary Clinton atop the Democratic ticket." "The leftward-tilting map means a GOP-controlled Senate could be shor ...
