28.5 million conflict-hit children denied education: UN

Sep 23 2013, 11:54pm CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Sep 24 (IANS) A total of 28.5 million children in conflict-plagued countries are being denied an education, leaders from governments and international organisations said at the UN General Assembly here.

United Nations, Sep 24 — A total of 28.5 million children in conflict-plagued countries are being denied an education, leaders from governments and international organisations said at the UN General Assembly here.

"We must make an intentional and deliberate turn from past policy responses to humanitarian crises where education has typically been underfunded," Xinhua cited Gordon Brown, the United Nations special envoy for Global Education, as saying Monday at a meeting of "Education Cannot Wait".

"Today, with nearly one million Syrian refugee children, we have the opportunity to take immediate action and demonstrate that we can not only prioritise, but deliver on the promise of education for all."

More than half of the world's 57 million primary-school-age children who are out of school live in countries scarred by war and conflict, compared to 42 percent in 2008.

Conflicts, fighting and displacement in Syria, the Central African Republic, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have largely contributed to this increase, according to Save the Children.

Education should never be the cost of conflict, Anthony Lake, executive director of the UN Children's Fund, said.

"Education cannot wait for battles to end ... or disasters to be averted ... or funding to be available. Education cannot wait .. . because children cannot wait," Lake said.

Alice Albright, chief executive officer of the Global Partnership for Education, said that education in emergency situations is severely underfunded, accounting for only 1.4 percent of humanitarian aid.

She proposed doubling the amount and improving coordination among governments, donors and humanitarian agencies.

"We all have a duty to the children of the world, to deliver good quality education regardless of the hostile conditions under which they live," said Tove Romsaas Wang, the chief executive officer of Save the Children Norway.

The leaders also agreed that education must play a central role in any post-2015 development plan.

Attempts led by the Polish foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski to stop the Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini, whom he considers to be soft on Russia, becoming the new EU foreign policy chief look likely to fail when her appointment is debated by the European Council on Wednesday. Mogherini remains the front runner despite concerns expressed by Sikorski and his allies in the Baltic States that she has not been taking a hard enough line on Ru ...

What's In a Name? Asking Simple Questions...

Jun 17 2014 11:48am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Often, it is the simplest questions that confound us. Socrates new this well -- and one of the reasons he was treated so harshly was because of how uncomfortable some people are made to feel when they are asked simple questions -- usually because the answers can be quite difficult to arrive at simply. Thorny issues, complicated and demanding mental exertion and stumbling at times to get there. Recently, I went to ...

Toby Young: Anti-Semite, or the Victim of Media Bias and Delegitimisation of Israel?

Jun 14 2014 10:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

One of my favourite journalists (also education-impresario, and author) Toby Young has this week been accused of being both an Islamophobe and an anti-Semite. It is of course quite possible to display anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish bigotry. Members of the British National Party (BNP) for instance, may fall into that camp. And you can understand the Islamophobe thing. Or at least I can. Anyone out of step with the idea of turning Britain into a fully blown Islamic st ...
