12 killed in Iraq bomb attacks

Sep 24 2013, 8:16am CDT | by IANS

Ramadi (Iraq), Sep 24 (IANS) At least 12 people were killed and 17 others wounded in bomb attacks targeting the security forces and senior officials in Iraq's western province of Anbar Tuesday, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source.

Ramadi (Iraq), Sep 24 — At least 12 people were killed and 17 others wounded in bomb attacks targeting the security forces and senior officials in Iraq's western province of Anbar Tuesday, Xinhua reported citing a provincial police source.

In one of the attacks, a suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laden car at the entrance of the house of Waqass Adnan, mayor of the city of Aana, some 250 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The huge blast was immediately followed by a coordinated attack on the security personnel guarding the residence, apparently in an attempt to break into the house, the source said.

The gunfight resulted in the deaths of four policemen and a brother of the mayor and injuries to four policemen, while the mayor himself escaped unharmed, the source said, adding that four of the gunmen were also killed.

Meanwhile, another suicide bomber rammed his explosives-packed car and blew it up at the entrance of Aana police station, killing two policemen and wounding three others, the source said.

In a separate incident, gunmen fired four mortar rounds at a police station in the nearby city of Rawa, about 255 km west of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding seven others, he said.

In addition, gunmen blew up a booby-trapped car under the bridge between the two cities of Aana and Rawa destroying a part of the bridge.

Ziad Tariq, an officer in Anbar's provincial operations command, escaped unharmed a roadside bomb explosion near his convoy in the provincial capital city of Ramadi, some 100 km west of Baghdad, but three of his bodyguards were wounded.

Insurgent attacks continue in the volatile Sunni Arab area west of Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Israeli Novelist Aharon Appelfeld: It Is Not Morally Easy to Be Cruel

Jul 21 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Edinburgh International Film Festival
Since the beginning of the war, I have spoken twice to Aharon Appelfeld, the celebrated Israeli novelist and Holocaust survivor whose book, "Blooms of Darkness," has sold over a million copies. He is sort of secluded in his home in a little village close to Jerusalem. When there is an alarm, he goes into his cellar with his wife -- like everybody else does these days in Israel. When I asked his opinion about the events, he answered twice that his ...

Iraq Veteran Darin Walker Could Lose Therapy Ducks In Dispute With Town

Jul 21 2014 3:06am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Darin Welker, a veteran of the Iraq War, says he relies on 14 pet ducks for comfort and physical therapy, but by keeping the birds, he's running afoul of local laws. As a result, the village of West Lafayette, Ohio, is trying to make the 36-year-old ditch his ducks. Welker told the Coshocton Tribune that he served nearly a year in Iraq in 2005 and came home with a bad back. While the Department of Veterans Affairs paid for his back surgery in 2012, the agency ducked his doctor ...

2013 CNN Heroes
(CNN) – Just days after the militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria said they killed hundreds of Syrians, dozens of Iraqi Christian families are now fleeing the ISIS-controlled city of Mosul, hoping to avoid a similar fate. On Friday, the al Qaeda splinter group issued an ultimatum to Iraqi Christians living in Mosul — by Saturday at noon (5 a.m. ET), they must convert to Islam, pay a fine or face “death by the sword.” A total of 52 Ch ...

The heart of a champion

Referee Arthur Mercante counts Zolani Petelo out
I’ve only cried twice at a public sporting event. And both times, I watched a hero of mine – Muhammad Ali – lose a fight. The first time was at the first Ali-Frazier fight, held on March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such mania in an audience as there was before that fight. Ali and Frazier genuinely hated each other. Before the fight, Frazier sat in his corner, glaring at Ali, pounding his fists together. “He don’ know nuthin’ ’bout street fightin,’” ...

The Fix: Amid unrest in Iraq, Americans blame U.S. withdrawal more than its invasion

Kashmir Shiite Offer To Fight Against ISIS In Iraq
When it comes to the current violence in Iraq, Americans blame Iraq itself more than the United States' decision to go to war there, according to a new poll Friday from the Pew Research Center. But when it comes to America's culpability, there's something of a split. Slightly more Americans blame the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq than blame the war ...
