20 killed in Damascus blast, say activists (Roundup)

Sep 27 2013, 11:36am CDT | by IANS

Damascus/Geneva Sep 27 (IANS) At least 20 people were killed Friday in a blast in Syrian capital Damascus even as the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) condemned the continued violations of human rights in the strife-torn country.

Damascus/Geneva Sep 27 — At least 20 people were killed Friday in a blast in Syrian capital Damascus even as the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) condemned the continued violations of human rights in the strife-torn country.

The blast, which was likely caused by a booby-trapped car bomb, rocked the suburb of Ranskous near Damascus, Xinhua reported citing activists who did not give further details.

The Syrian government has not commented on the bombing.

The blast happened amid growing tension between moderate and radical rebels in several Syrian cities.

The Syrian opposition in exile said in a recent statement that the radical rebels were trying to "steal the revolution".

Meanwhile, in Geneva, the UNHRC Friday strongly condemned the continued gross, systematic and widespread violations of human rights and all violations of international humanitarian law in Syria and urged the government to grant immediate access to the UN commission of inquiry.

The UNHRC demanded that the Syrian authorities cooperate fully with the commission of inquiry, including by granting it immediate, full and unfettered access throughout the country, reported WAM, the official news agency of the United Arab Emirates.

"The council strongly condemned the continued gross, systematic and widespread violations of human rights and all violations of international humanitarian law by the Syrian authorities and affiliated militias, as well as any human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law by armed opposition groups," it said in a resolution adopted at the end of its 24th session.

In another development, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said his government possessed non-chemical weapons that were so sophisticated they they could "blind" Israel anytime.

"During the 1980s, we manufactured chemical weapons as a deterrent to nuclear-armed Israel," AKI quoted Assad as telling Lebanese daily al-Akhbar Thursday.

"Now these are no longer a deterrent. Today, we have more important and sophisticated weapons capable of blinding Israel in an instant," he said.

The real objective of the US and its allies is not Syria's chemical weapons arsenal but to alter the regional balance of power and protect Israel, Assad added.

Assad said that Syria's decision to hand over its chemical weapons to the international community to be destroyed has caused Washington and other capitals "embarrassment".

"Now the ball is in their court," Assad said.

"We have thousands of tonnes of chemical weapons, which are a burden for us. Destroying them would cost us a huge amount of money and time," he added.

How Climate Change Helped ISIS

Sep 29 2014 4:42pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As the Obama administration undertakes a highly public, multilateral campaign to degrade and destroy the militant jihadists known as ISIS, ISIL and the Islamic State, many in the West remain unaware that climate played a significant role in the rise of Syria's extremists. A historic drought afflicted the country from 2006 through 2010, setting off a dire humanitarian crisis for millions of Syrians. Yet the ...

Lebanon: The Forgotten Front

Sep 27 2014 8:39am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

While the world's attention has been focused on the combined efforts of Arab and U.S. forces attacking "Islamic State" (IS) positions in Iraq and Syria, there is unfolding in Lebanon, a third front in the war against this violent extremist group. This third front has received scant attention. Because Lebanon has been so overwhelmed by the fallout from Syria's civil war, aggravating the country's fragile se ...

Syria: Defeat IS and Then What?

Sep 24 2014 9:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Syria is again in the news, due mostly to the recent round of American and coalition (who exactly?) air strikes against 20 odd IS targets in North and East Syria. While this may be the more dramatic piece of news about the war-torn country, once daubed the ''heart of Arabism," a lot more is happening. First, the fighting on the Syrian side of the Golan border with Israel is developing against the Assad regime, and with it the serious possibility that the rebels will be able to ...

A report from the Associated Press claims Washington officials--and particularly Secretary of State John Kerry--alerted Syria of pending strikes before they began last night.  Syrian officials had warned that any surprise strikes on its soil had to "be coordinated with Damascus or else they would be considered an act of aggression against Syria and a breach of its sovereignty."  According to the AP, Syria ...

Sep 23 2014 9:41am CDT | Source: WND

(WASHINGTON EXAMINER) The State Department said Tuesday that the U.S. had “informed” the Syrian government about plans to strike Islamic State of Iraq and Syria targets inside Syria but did not request permission, coordinate with Damascus or give any indication of timing. “We warned Syria not to engage U.S. aircraft.
