Syria opposition hails UN resolution

Damascus, Sep 29 (IANS) A prominent figure of Syria's domestic opposition Sunday hailed the UN Security Council resolution on chemical weapons, saying it prevented a US military strike that could spark a broader regional war.

Damascus, Sep 29 — A prominent figure of Syria's domestic opposition Sunday hailed the UN Security Council resolution on chemical weapons, saying it prevented a US military strike that could spark a broader regional war.

The UN Security Council resolution would help remove the chemical weapons from the conflict in Syria and thus could save more lives, said Safwan Akkasheh, a prominent figure in the National Coordination Body, a group which advocates peaceful political transition in Syria.

This resolution would decrease the number of Syrian victims and it also "spares us a foreign military aggression", and saved the region from a wide-scale regional war, he told Xinhua in an interview.

Regarding the UN calls for holding the international conference on Syria in Geneva in mid-November, Akkasheh commented that the international community has been convinced that there is no military solution to the current crisis in Syria.

"We think that there is no military solution to the crisis and our destiny is the political solution and the sole gate before the political solution is the Geneva conference... so all political and honourable Syrian parties must head toward this conference and work to make it successful," he added.

Amid risks of escalation in the Syrian conflict, the UN Security Council voted unanimously Friday to adopt a resolution aimed at ridding Syria of chemical weapons, and bringing a settlement to the 30-month-old Syrian crisis back within the UN framework.

Under the legally binding resolution, which is based on a deal between Washington and Moscow, the Syrian government will abandon its chemical weapons stockpile and give experts unfettered access to monitor its destruction by mid-2014 to avoid US military attacks.

New Zealand: Time for a Small Country on the UN Security Council

Aug 30 2014 10:53am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I believe that few people could name more than five members of the UN Security Council. The U.S., Russia and China certainly. Think hard and you would probably add in the United Kingdom and -- maybe -- France, as the countries who hold the power of "nay" or "aye" over key actions of the United Nations, including how the UN addresses conflicts arising around the world. There are 10 other countries ...

Six Steps the World Must Take Now to Stop the Horror of ISIS

Aug 11 2014 3:41pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The international community's response to the humanitarian crisis in Iraq driven by ISIS jihadists against minorities has been grossly inadequate and slow. The founding words of the United Nations -- "Never again" -- ring hollow as the UN and powerful member states lack the willpower to intervene and prevent the genocide of religious minorities, yet again. As ISIS seeks to establish a Sunni Caliphate in the Middle ...

Once Again, Obama Helps Israel by Hurting It

Jul 28 2014 8:51am CDT | Source: Big Government

President Barack Obama's attempt to impose his will on Israel--and save face after Secretary of State John Kerry's disastrous ceasefire mission--continued at the UN Security Council overnight, with a midnight session Monday morning demanding a ceasefire.  It was a gross betrayal of America's best ally in the Middle East. However, it has--quite unintentionally--created a new opportunity for Israel in its war against Hamas. The war has continued Monday, since Hamas keeps f ...

A Few Words of Praise for the UN

Jul 23 2014 9:56am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When the world goes into crisis, the United Nations, despite its sometimes fitful reputation, magically reappears as a place of last resort for solving its most pressing problems. In the two major crises that have faced the planet over the last few weeks -- the tragedy of the Malaysian Flight 17 explosion and the Israeli invasion of Gaza -- the UN has both times assumed a prominent role. First, on Monday, the UN Security Council u ...

About 17,000 Palestinians have sought shelter since Israel began striking back one week ago. According to BBC News, Gaza officials claim "at least 172 Palestinians have been killed" by the Israeli strikes. The UN estimates "77% of the people killed in Gaza have been civilians."
