US Senate urged to pass emergency funding bill

Sep 29 2013, 11:47pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 30 (IANS) US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

Washington, Sep 30 — US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

"If the Senate stalls until Monday afternoon instead of working today, it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership," reported Xinhua citing Boehner in a statement.

The House of Representatives voted in the early hours Sunday to pass a short-term government funding bill proposed by Boehner and other Republican leaders to fund the federal government's operations from Oct 1 through Dec 15 and delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, for one year.

The bill passed by the lower chamber of Congress also contained a repeal of the medical device tax in the ACA to fund Obamacare and a measure ensuring service members to get paid in the event of a government shutdown.

"They will be deliberately bringing the nation to the brink of a government shutdown for the sake of raising taxes on seniors' pacemakers and children's hearing aids and plowing ahead with the train wreck that is the president's health care law. The American people will not stand for it," Boehner said.

The 2.3 percent medical device tax, which took effect in January, is levied on manufacturers and importers for sales of medical devices in the nation to fund the implementation of Obamacare.

After the House vote, the road to avoid a possible government shutdown has become tougher.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, has insisted the upper chamber would reject any bill derailing Obamacare. White House has also voiced its opposition. The Senate is scheduled not to be in session until Monday afternoon.

What would the Mideast be like without Christians?

Sep 14 2014 3:38pm CDT | Source: WND

ISIS/ISIL has executed another man from the West, this time a humanitarian aid worker. (Both President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner have referred to the group ISIS as ISIL, although press reports refer to both names. There is a nonprofit group in Washington that goes by the initials ISIS, so many now refer to it as ISIL.) ISIS/ISIL obviously doesn’t care if someone is a journalist with nothing to do with the conflict or ...

Friday Talking Points -- Slouching Off To War

Sep 12 2014 6:24pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This is a special edition of this column, for a number of reasons. The first is that we're back after a one-week vacation hiatus, but the most special reason (to us, at least) is that this is the seventh anniversary of the launching of the "Friday Talking Points" column, which first appeared both on my site and the Huffington Post on September 14, 2007. The more mathematically-astute among you may notice ...

Progressive Democrats Push For Vote To Authorize Force Against ISIS

Sep 11 2014 6:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama maintains that he doesn't need congressional approval before engaging the nation's armed forces in Iraq. But progressives on Capitol Hill think Congress should weigh in anyway -- especially given the possibility of a risky, open-ended mission that is expected to last well beyond Obama's last day in office. Reps. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, intro ...

Back a Candidate Just Because He's Gay? Why You Should Support Seth Moulton Over Richard Tisei

Sep 11 2014 1:53pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Do you think it's in the best interest of LGBT people to add another GOP seat to the House of Representatives? Whether you're gay or straight, pro- or anti-LGBT, you couldn't answer that question with anything other than a firm "No!" Of course, if you're anti-LGBT, it would be a good thing, keeping back LGBT rights, since House Speaker John Boehner has refused to allow a vote on an LGBT ...

Marco Rubio Inadvertently Admits Defeating The Islamic State May Be Impossible

Sep 11 2014 12:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- There's widespread agreement in Washington that it would be great if the United States and other countries could defeat the Islamic State, a militant group also known as ISIL and ISIS. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said it's time to "defeat ISIS," President Barack Obama wants to "degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL," and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) wishes to focus on "destroying this terrorist th ...

House Of Representatives Gives D.C. The Big Foam Finger

Sep 10 2014 4:37pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- On Monday, the House of Representatives was back in session for the first time since its August recess. Its Longworth cafeteria offered hungry representatives and aides a wide variety of fare for its return to business -- Indian food in the global section, pizza, salad and the special for the week, "world tacos." But, as has been the case for the past three years, there weren't many options when it came to packaging: It was all Styrofoam, Styrofoam, Styr ...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled House voted Tuesday to condemn President Barack Obama for failing to give 30-day notice to Congress about the exchange in May of American prisoner Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban leaders held at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The vote was 249-163, with 22 Democrats — many locked in tough re-election races — breaking ranks and backing the nonbinding resolution. "By setting ...

Sep 9 2014 2:37pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- As Congress reconvenes after its August recess, a major source of political drama is the Export-Import Bank and whether a deep divide in the House GOP over renewing the government agency will lead to a shutdown. But there's another rift in the Ex-Im ether underscored by a new bill that will be introduced by Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) on Tuesday: the split between progressive Dem ...
