US Senate urged to pass emergency funding bill

Sep 29 2013, 11:47pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 30 (IANS) US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

Washington, Sep 30 — US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

"If the Senate stalls until Monday afternoon instead of working today, it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership," reported Xinhua citing Boehner in a statement.

The House of Representatives voted in the early hours Sunday to pass a short-term government funding bill proposed by Boehner and other Republican leaders to fund the federal government's operations from Oct 1 through Dec 15 and delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, for one year.

The bill passed by the lower chamber of Congress also contained a repeal of the medical device tax in the ACA to fund Obamacare and a measure ensuring service members to get paid in the event of a government shutdown.

"They will be deliberately bringing the nation to the brink of a government shutdown for the sake of raising taxes on seniors' pacemakers and children's hearing aids and plowing ahead with the train wreck that is the president's health care law. The American people will not stand for it," Boehner said.

The 2.3 percent medical device tax, which took effect in January, is levied on manufacturers and importers for sales of medical devices in the nation to fund the implementation of Obamacare.

After the House vote, the road to avoid a possible government shutdown has become tougher.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, has insisted the upper chamber would reject any bill derailing Obamacare. White House has also voiced its opposition. The Senate is scheduled not to be in session until Monday afternoon.

Democrats are Doomed (Unless They Make the Minimum Wage the #1 November Election Issue)

Aug 29 2014 6:09pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

If you were the Democrats and you were looking for a good vote-getting midterm election issue, what criteria would you use? How about an issue with 70-80% support in polls? How about one that is bipartisan--supported by Republicans like Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum and Bill O'Reilly? How about one that is national in scope, with plenty of local, grassroots energy? What about one that is simple and easy to understand, unlike Oba ...

Aug 29 2014 2:03pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) isn't the only congressional Republican up for re-election who is touting his support for the Violence Against Women Act without mentioning that he didn't vote for the reauthorization's beefed-up version. Rep. Steve Southerland (R-Fla.), who faces a strong challenge from Democrat Gwen Graham, released a new ad Friday in which a campaign supporter says Southerland "is advocating ...

Cory Gardner's Immigration Betrayal Not Looking So Hot Right Now

Aug 29 2014 12:03pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Rep. Cory Gardner (R-CO) betrayed his generally conservative voting record in voting against a bill to stop President Obama from expanding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program of unilateral amnesty, a move undoubtedly intended to protect his left flank in the competitive Senate race in which race he's locked. But now that the politics of immigration have shifted dramatically under his feet, the vote isn't looking so smart. Case in point: arch-liberal Rep. Jar ...

Political Oxymorons -- the Birthplace of Brilliant

Aug 29 2014 9:01am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Jeanine McDonnell, daughter of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, says that her mother has a "mild obsession" with another man. Mild lives in detergent adverts. Obsession gets draped around designer perfume. Put the two words together however and you get something that's kind of interesting -- refined and just a little bit dirty. It's an oxymoron, and in politics, oxymorons get a bad wrap. Politician ...

Tea party reveals hottest political issue of 2014

Aug 27 2014 6:43pm CDT | Source: WND

Multiple new polls show tea-party activists see the border crisis as the most important issue of the 2014 midterm elections, and the movement once known for its insistence upon less spending and smaller government is ready to make border security a critical issue heading into November. Surveys from Gallup, Polling Company Inc. and the Tea Party Patriots show immigration as the top issue for voters in 2014. Democrats histo ...

Republicans Threaten To Shut Down The Government If Obama Extends Relief To Immigrants

Aug 27 2014 1:53pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: AP/Alex Brandon Rep. Steve King (R-IA) floated the possibility of shutting down the government on Wednesday if President Obama issues an executive action granting deportation relief to more undocumented immigrants. King’s comments come just one day after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) suggested that Republicans in the Senate use “funding mechanisms to address this issue.” “If the president wields his pen and commits that unconstitutional act to legalize milli ...

Boehner Haters Head Back to Congress

Bloomberg: "Ten of the 12 House Republicans who didn't support John Boehner's 2013 selection as speaker are cruising to November victories, despite the business community's attempts to knock some of them off." "It's an ominous twist in the Republican civil war between the Tea Party and the business community. Neither side had enough power to annihilate the other, ...

Standing in the ashes

Aug 24 2014 3:13pm CDT | Source: WND

If in the future America sees another catastrophe perpetrated by terrorists and commentators in the media start asking how could this happen, think back to what I’m about to say. America has a failed foreign policy! I don’t believe for a minute that Iran has stopped working on a nuclear weapons program. Iran supports Hamas and ISIS, ISIL and/or the Islamic State. Iran has given weapons and financial support to both of these groups, although currently ISIS is the rich ...

HUFFPOST HILL - Policing: A Tankless Job

Aug 21 2014 4:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Steve King pointedly noted that there’s no Congressional White Caucus, however there is an informal group known as “Congress.” The GAO thinks the Bowe Bergdahl swap was illegal so we should…send him back? And Paul Ryan told Time Magazine he doesn’t like John Boehner’s tobacco-heavy odor. Don’t be surprised if a wounded Boehner sounds off in Newsweek about his distaste for the smell of whey protein and Brylcreem. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, August ...
