US Senate urged to pass emergency funding bill

Sep 29 2013, 11:47pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 30 (IANS) US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

Washington, Sep 30 — US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

"If the Senate stalls until Monday afternoon instead of working today, it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership," reported Xinhua citing Boehner in a statement.

The House of Representatives voted in the early hours Sunday to pass a short-term government funding bill proposed by Boehner and other Republican leaders to fund the federal government's operations from Oct 1 through Dec 15 and delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, for one year.

The bill passed by the lower chamber of Congress also contained a repeal of the medical device tax in the ACA to fund Obamacare and a measure ensuring service members to get paid in the event of a government shutdown.

"They will be deliberately bringing the nation to the brink of a government shutdown for the sake of raising taxes on seniors' pacemakers and children's hearing aids and plowing ahead with the train wreck that is the president's health care law. The American people will not stand for it," Boehner said.

The 2.3 percent medical device tax, which took effect in January, is levied on manufacturers and importers for sales of medical devices in the nation to fund the implementation of Obamacare.

After the House vote, the road to avoid a possible government shutdown has become tougher.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, has insisted the upper chamber would reject any bill derailing Obamacare. White House has also voiced its opposition. The Senate is scheduled not to be in session until Monday afternoon.

House Rules Committee Considers King Amendment

Jul 30 2014 6:59pm CDT | Source: Big Government

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In order to obtain more conservative votes some provisions might be added to the House border bill, according to House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions. “I think the issue is whether there will be provisions added to get their vote, not provisions added that would diminish the bill,” he told reporters Wednesday. Sessions said that a provision targeting President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – which allows certain illegal imm ...

The Nuclear Option: Impeaching Obama Is a Losing Strategy for the GOP

Jul 30 2014 7:58am CDT | Source: Big Government

All this talk of impeaching the president is the stupidest Republican political strategy so far this century. Sure, anybody can make a strong argument that President Obama is one of the worst presidents in modern history. All the hope and change he promised in 2008 have turned into bitter despair and misery. On the domestic front, while unemployment figures are not as bad as they once were, anybody who thinks the economy is humming along has not looked around. Even the pres ...

Campaign strategist Karl Rove denounced talk about Republicans impeaching President Obama, including White House efforts to stoke the rumors. On Fox News Wednesday morning, Rove referred to Obama as the “cynic in chief” who was fueling the rumors for the sake of fundraising. “How cynical. How pathetic,” he said. Rove reminded the audience that House Speaker John Boehner denied that Republicans had any plans to impeach the president, blaming some conservative Republ ...

Five Things to Remember about Obama's Clean Power Plant Rule

Jul 29 2014 9:49pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Thursday and Friday EPA will hold in this city the final in its series of hearings on its proposed rule to clean up carbon pollution from coal fired power plants. There will be a lot of theater, and a lot of opposition as well as support. Some of the opposition comes from workers from coal mining communities or those with power plants fired with coal; their livelihoods are at risk from the changes sweeping the utility industry, including the declining dominance of coal. Others are i ...

Fear Of Inaction Drives GOP Acceptance Of Border Bill

Jul 29 2014 10:49am CDT | Source: Big Government

The bill doesn't touch President Obama's “deferred” prosecution of illegal alien minors, or his threats to expand the program to as many as 6 million people, but House Republicans now appear to have firmly concluded they must pass something before they head home to face constituents for a five-week summer break. “Members are nervous about going home without saying they did something. WASHINGTON (AP) — Familiar with the Export-Import Bank? In all likelihood, most voters in Louisiana and Virginia aren't either. And yet Democratic Sen. Mark Warner is talking about the bank on the campaign trail, portraying it as a job creator that must be protected against tea party ideologues. "We've got to do more so support our export capabilities. We've got to make sure we keep Virginia competitive in the global ec ...

Jul 28 2014 9:48pm CDT | Source: Big Government

One of the key immigration hawks in the House is signaling that changes to a border crisis package could find acquiescence from the right flank of the GOP conference, although he and like-minded colleagues are still looking to see a resolution accompany the package expressing protest against President Obama's executive actions on amnesty. Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) told Breitbart News that he expects the legislation that Hou ...
