US Senate urged to pass emergency funding bill

Sep 29 2013, 11:47pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 30 (IANS) US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

Washington, Sep 30 — US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

"If the Senate stalls until Monday afternoon instead of working today, it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership," reported Xinhua citing Boehner in a statement.

The House of Representatives voted in the early hours Sunday to pass a short-term government funding bill proposed by Boehner and other Republican leaders to fund the federal government's operations from Oct 1 through Dec 15 and delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, for one year.

The bill passed by the lower chamber of Congress also contained a repeal of the medical device tax in the ACA to fund Obamacare and a measure ensuring service members to get paid in the event of a government shutdown.

"They will be deliberately bringing the nation to the brink of a government shutdown for the sake of raising taxes on seniors' pacemakers and children's hearing aids and plowing ahead with the train wreck that is the president's health care law. The American people will not stand for it," Boehner said.

The 2.3 percent medical device tax, which took effect in January, is levied on manufacturers and importers for sales of medical devices in the nation to fund the implementation of Obamacare.

After the House vote, the road to avoid a possible government shutdown has become tougher.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, has insisted the upper chamber would reject any bill derailing Obamacare. White House has also voiced its opposition. The Senate is scheduled not to be in session until Monday afternoon.

Scott Brown: Veterans 'Resent' Jeanne Shaheen for Calling American Troops 'Occupiers'

Oct 31 2014 12:34pm CDT | Source: Big Government

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — One of the most memorable lines from Thursday evening’s final debate between incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and former Sen. Scott Brown came when Brown accused Shaheen of comparing America’s armed forces to “occupiers.” “I don’t think we should take tens of thousands of American troops and put them back into Iraq as an occupying force,” Shaheen said when asked by debate co-moderator George Stephanopoulos of ABC News if she’d support sending ...

President Obama's Mixed-Up Alliances: Israel v. Iran

Oct 31 2014 9:31am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Obama Administration, it seems, is very sensitive to criticism. At least, when Israelis make light of (one of) them.  In the beginning of 2014, President Obama and his Secretary of State, John Kerry, were fuming that Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaa’lon dared to deride an earlier American peace plan proposal and to ridicule Secretary Kerry in an off-the-record comment to the media: (T)he American security plan that was prese ...

Why Latinos Should Vote for the Democrats

Oct 30 2014 4:34pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In this election, Hispanics must support Democrats. It is not often in politics that people are given the choice between real, substantive contrasts. An attitude of "vote for the lesser of two evils" that permeates the American electorate has veiled many voters into believing that both the Democratic and Republican parties are two sides of the same coin. They are not. And Latinos know it. While ther ...

TOPEKA, Kan. -- All politics is local, except when it isn't. That's the lesson being learned in Kansas' 1st Congressional District, where tea party-aligned Rep. In a rural and conservative district that hasn't elected ...

Oct 28 2014 9:41am CDT | Source: Big Government

This story originally appeared in Politico Magazine:  When President Obama, after months of equivocation over how to respond to the takeover of parts of Iraq and Syria by radical militants, announced in September that the United States would “lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat,” the White House swung quickly into action, sending proposed legislation to train and equip Syrian rebels to Capitol Hill that same day.  Unfortunately, the Whit ...
