US Senate urged to pass emergency funding bill

Sep 29 2013, 11:47pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Sep 30 (IANS) US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

Washington, Sep 30 — US House Speaker John Boehner Sunday urged the Senate to take action in a timely manner and pass a stopgap government funding bill to avert the first partial government shutdown since 1996.

"If the Senate stalls until Monday afternoon instead of working today, it would be an act of breathtaking arrogance by the Senate Democratic leadership," reported Xinhua citing Boehner in a statement.

The House of Representatives voted in the early hours Sunday to pass a short-term government funding bill proposed by Boehner and other Republican leaders to fund the federal government's operations from Oct 1 through Dec 15 and delay the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, for one year.

The bill passed by the lower chamber of Congress also contained a repeal of the medical device tax in the ACA to fund Obamacare and a measure ensuring service members to get paid in the event of a government shutdown.

"They will be deliberately bringing the nation to the brink of a government shutdown for the sake of raising taxes on seniors' pacemakers and children's hearing aids and plowing ahead with the train wreck that is the president's health care law. The American people will not stand for it," Boehner said.

The 2.3 percent medical device tax, which took effect in January, is levied on manufacturers and importers for sales of medical devices in the nation to fund the implementation of Obamacare.

After the House vote, the road to avoid a possible government shutdown has become tougher.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, has insisted the upper chamber would reject any bill derailing Obamacare. White House has also voiced its opposition. The Senate is scheduled not to be in session until Monday afternoon.

#DirtyDenier$ Day 13: Congressman Tom Latham

Aug 20 2014 5:01am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Congressman Tom Latham represents a large, windy district in Iowa. But unfortunately the winds of change don't seem to have blown strongly enough to change his outdated views on energy and climate policy. Latham supports "an all of the above energy policy that utilizes responsible energy exploration and efficient uses of American sources of energy". But his version of "all of the above" has meant promoting the agenda of dirty polluters rather than investing ...

A new Dallas ordinance restricting speech critical of President Obama is the target of a lawsuit by the nonprofit Thomas More Law Center. The activist group Overpasses for America is “being stifled” by the ordinance, adopted Jan. 22 by the Dallas City Council, which bars them from using certain public locations to criticize Obama and call for his impeachment, TMLC said. The law imposes fines of up to $500 for “certai ...

#DirtyDenier$ Day 8: Shelley Moore Capito

Aug 13 2014 5:10am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito has received $865,436 from the Mining Industry over the course of her career. This is more money than any other House or Senate candidate besides House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. But, while she hopes to turn this Senate seat from blue to red, it also appears that she plans to turn our air black as she pushes for more coal in our national energy mix. Mining interests support Capito, an ...

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) clarified his position on impeaching President Barack Obama on Saturday, saying that even though the president deserves to be impeached, he shouldn't be removed from office. In a radio interview earlier last week, Huckabee said the president had committed impeachable offenses, but it would be impractical to try him for impeachment because Democrats would block it.
