Kenya arrests one more suspect over mall attack

Sep 29 2013, 11:47pm CDT | by IANS

Nairobi, Sep 30 (IANS) Kenyan security forces Sunday nabbed another suspect, raising the number of arrested people to 10 over the Sep 21 terror attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall.

Nairobi, Sep 30 — Kenyan security forces Sunday nabbed another suspect, raising the number of arrested people to 10 over the Sep 21 terror attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall.

"There are nine suspects in custody who are held under the counter-terrorism laws. As soon as investigations are complete, we will update you with identities of the suspects," reported Xinhua citing Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Interior Joseph Ole Lenku stating during a press conference here.

"More suspects continue to be arrested including one arrested today," he added.

The East African country's security forces are working round the clock to unearth details that might lead to the arrest of more terror suspects.

"Investigations into the Westgate shopping mall terror attack continue. So far, police have recorded statements from 156 witnesses," said the official, adding that forensic investigators have identified one of the vehicles used by terrorists.

According to the official sources, gunmen killed at least 61 civilians and six security agents, who also shot dead five attackers. As many as 175 people were wounded in the four-day siege on the mall.

"Investigators have recovered crucial items in the vehicle and they are providing good and credible leads. Some of the items found in the vehicle include an assortment of illegal weapons," Lenku said.

In response to a question about theft inside the mall, the minister said at least three suspected looters were arrested.

He also told reporters that there is no formal information on missing persons, contrary to reports from the Kenya Red Cross Society saying some 59 people remain unaccounted for.

Ebola and the Fear That Makes Us Stupid

Oct 25 2014 4:05pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Who says that ordinary Americans can't make a difference? Last week, a few hundred frightened, insular people in Oklahoma City got millions of Africans scratching their heads on just how stupid Americans can be. The story may have been tucked into page 10 of your newspaper or newsfeed but I saw it all over the front pages in Nairobi: As the opportunity of a lifetime, 24 kids from an orphanage choir in Kenya had ...

Howard Dean: Obama Intel Criticism Comparable to Birtherism

Oct 2 2014 12:11am CDT | Source: Big Government

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean (D) argued that criticizing President Obama for a report that he missed the majority of his intelligence briefings was tantamount to saying the president was born in Kenya and has “no credibility whatsoever” on Wednesday’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC. “This rises to the level of ‘Obama was born in Kenya and he’s Muslim.’ I mean, this is just right-wing blather with ...

Scotland, Let's Chart a New Course for Generations to Come

Sep 17 2014 10:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I remember the last time I felt like this. I was 15, and although I couldn't vote in the first Scottish Parliament election, I was excited. For the first time politics mattered that little bit more to all of us. We had 'mock elections' at school and learned all about democracy and devolution. It was probably why I spent the last decade campaigning for 'votes at 16.' I didn't understand why we could marry, ...
