Netanyahu urges Obama to keep Iran sanctions in place

Sep 30 2013, 9:38pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 1 (IANS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Barack Obama to keep economic sanctions on Iran in place to ease Israeli concerns about Washington's diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Washington, Oct 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Barack Obama to keep economic sanctions on Iran in place to ease Israeli concerns about Washington's diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Netanyahu will deliver a speech Tuesday at the UN general assembly.

"If diplomacy is to work, those pressures must be kept in place, " reported Xinhua citing Netanyahu after a meeting with Obama at the White House.

"I think that they (the pressures on economy) should not be lessened until there is verifiable success," he said, adding that if the diplomatic solution failed, sanctions should be strengthened.

Netanyahu insisted that the bottom line was to ensure that "Iran fully dismantles its military nuclear programme".

Obama said both he and Netanyahu believe that it was the " extraordinary sanctions" put in place over the past several years that made the Iranians now prepared to negotiate.

"We have to test diplomacy. We have to see if, in fact, they are serious about their willingness to abide by international norms and international law and international requirements and resolutions," Obama said while reiterating that he will take no options off the table, including military options, in terms of making sure there's no nuclear weapons in Iran.

Obama and Netanyahu also discussed the issues over Syria, Palestine and Egypt.

On Syria, Obama said the two sides shared belief that they have to "move with speed and dispatch in actually making sure that the agreement that was arrived at in the United Nations is followed through."

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday in a bid to rid the war-torn Syria of chemical weapons.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Visits tactical headquarters of the IDF
Israel is not tame. But she is good. If a poacher shoots arrows at a pride of sleeping lions, are the lions to blame for rousing and defending themselves? What does one say of the shooter when he intentionally cowers behind the skirts of his own women and daughters, hoping, indeed praying, that these precious souls will inadvertently perish as a result? One calls him a coward, a fool and a monster. Such are the men of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Palestinian Authority – terrorists a ...

Let's Tell the Truth About This International Madness

Russian President Vladimir Putin Visits Severomorsk
The horrible human costs and increasing danger the world is now facing in Gaza, Ukraine, and Iraq show the consequences of not telling the truth. And unfortunately, we seem to mostly have political leaders who are unwilling to admit the truth of what's happening, deal with root causes instead of exploiting symptoms, and then do everything possible to prevent the escalation of violence and further wars. Instead we have politicians who are mostly looking for opportunities to blame ...

Democrats and their Mendacity with Israel

Ted Cruz Addresses Conservative Policy Summit
Democrats have a penchant for implementing bad policies and then responding to the deleterious consequences by throwing money at the problem.  The Senate supplemental appropriations bill, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), allocates an additional $2.7 billion to deal with the border crisis, yet declines to deal with the flawed policies that have engendered this new wave of illegal immigration in the first place. Ironically, in order to grease the skids of the bill, Democrats have ...

With the world in turmoil, foreign policy is shaping up to be one of the most important issues facing potential 2016 presidential candidates.
