Netanyahu urges Obama to keep Iran sanctions in place

Sep 30 2013, 9:38pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 1 (IANS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Barack Obama to keep economic sanctions on Iran in place to ease Israeli concerns about Washington's diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Washington, Oct 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Barack Obama to keep economic sanctions on Iran in place to ease Israeli concerns about Washington's diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Netanyahu will deliver a speech Tuesday at the UN general assembly.

"If diplomacy is to work, those pressures must be kept in place, " reported Xinhua citing Netanyahu after a meeting with Obama at the White House.

"I think that they (the pressures on economy) should not be lessened until there is verifiable success," he said, adding that if the diplomatic solution failed, sanctions should be strengthened.

Netanyahu insisted that the bottom line was to ensure that "Iran fully dismantles its military nuclear programme".

Obama said both he and Netanyahu believe that it was the " extraordinary sanctions" put in place over the past several years that made the Iranians now prepared to negotiate.

"We have to test diplomacy. We have to see if, in fact, they are serious about their willingness to abide by international norms and international law and international requirements and resolutions," Obama said while reiterating that he will take no options off the table, including military options, in terms of making sure there's no nuclear weapons in Iran.

Obama and Netanyahu also discussed the issues over Syria, Palestine and Egypt.

On Syria, Obama said the two sides shared belief that they have to "move with speed and dispatch in actually making sure that the agreement that was arrived at in the United Nations is followed through."

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday in a bid to rid the war-torn Syria of chemical weapons.

The Left Urges Israel to Violate Press Freedom

Nov 3 2014 8:17am CST | Source: Big Government

Once in a while a real "human rights" issue comes along that demands concerned protest from friends of Israel. In this case, however, the usual critics are silent, because the target whose rights are being threatened is a right-wing conservative, not a Palestinian terrorist hiding behind women and children.  This week, the Israeli Knesset will consider a proposed ban on the selling of free--as in, no cover price--newspapers to the general p ...

Abbas: Closure of Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque Site a 'Declaration of War'

Oct 31 2014 9:31am CDT | Source: Big Government

Israel’s closure of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount, following an assassination attempt on Wednesday, is tantamount to a “declaration of war,” Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday morning. Powers: WH ‘Probably’ Knows Who Made Chickensh*t Comments

Oct 30 2014 11:51pm CDT | Source: Big Government

USA Today columnist Kirsten Powers argued that the White House “probably” knows which official referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “chickensh*t,” and that this individual is “a pretty senior person” on Thursday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. “They probably know who said it. This must have been a pretty senior person, considering I don't think Jeffrey Goldberg would have relied on somebody who was some c-lister. So, if it’s somebody senior, I think they p ...
