Netanyahu urges Obama to keep Iran sanctions in place

Sep 30 2013, 9:38pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 1 (IANS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Barack Obama to keep economic sanctions on Iran in place to ease Israeli concerns about Washington's diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Washington, Oct 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Barack Obama to keep economic sanctions on Iran in place to ease Israeli concerns about Washington's diplomatic engagement with Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme.

Netanyahu will deliver a speech Tuesday at the UN general assembly.

"If diplomacy is to work, those pressures must be kept in place, " reported Xinhua citing Netanyahu after a meeting with Obama at the White House.

"I think that they (the pressures on economy) should not be lessened until there is verifiable success," he said, adding that if the diplomatic solution failed, sanctions should be strengthened.

Netanyahu insisted that the bottom line was to ensure that "Iran fully dismantles its military nuclear programme".

Obama said both he and Netanyahu believe that it was the " extraordinary sanctions" put in place over the past several years that made the Iranians now prepared to negotiate.

"We have to test diplomacy. We have to see if, in fact, they are serious about their willingness to abide by international norms and international law and international requirements and resolutions," Obama said while reiterating that he will take no options off the table, including military options, in terms of making sure there's no nuclear weapons in Iran.

Obama and Netanyahu also discussed the issues over Syria, Palestine and Egypt.

On Syria, Obama said the two sides shared belief that they have to "move with speed and dispatch in actually making sure that the agreement that was arrived at in the United Nations is followed through."

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday in a bid to rid the war-torn Syria of chemical weapons.

5 Ways Hamas is Like ISIS

Aug 21 2014 9:24am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared ISIS (Islamic State) and Hamas, calling them "branches of the same tree." The Obama administration, in the person of Marie Harf, declined to do the same. Yet while Hamas is focused on destroying Israel and ISIS is trying to build a new Sunni caliphate, there is little else to distinguish them, and several reasons both ought to be considered part of the same terror threat. 1. Hamas also ...

What President Obama Should Do About Israel

Aug 19 2014 5:49pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Now that Hamas has broken the temporary ceasefire with Israel—for the eleventh time—President Barack Obama has the opportunity to make amends for his mistaken approach to the war in Gaza.  Until now, Obama has effectively encouraged Hamas by restraining Israel, elevating Hamas’s preferred mediators (Qatar and Turkey), condemning Israeli counter-attacks that inadvertently kill Palestinian civilians, and urging ceasefires while terror tunnels remain intact. What the president ough ...
