Qaida group claims responsibility for Baghdad bombings

Baghdad, Oct 1 (IANS) Iraq's Al Qaida Front Tuesday claimed responsibility for a wave of car bombings in Iraq's capital Baghdad Monday that killed and wounded scores of people.

Baghdad, Oct 1 — Iraq's Al Qaida Front Tuesday claimed responsibility for a wave of car bombings in Iraq's capital Baghdad Monday that killed and wounded scores of people.

In an online statement, the front said that its fighters "simultaneously hit selected targets", which were security headquarters, military patrols, strongholds of Shiite militia groups and leading figures in the security forces as well as the Iraqi Shiite-dominated government.

The statement also said that the attacks came at a time when Iraqi security forces were intensifying security measures in Baghdad and carrying out a major offensive in the Sunni areas around Baghdad to stop ongoing insurgent attacks.

A total of 13 car bombings Monday ripped through the Shiite districts in Baghdad, killing some 41 people and wounding 151.

The Monday attacks came amid growing tension between the Sunnis and the Shiite-dominated government as the Sunnis in Iraq have been staging anti-government protests for nearly nine months against being marginalised by Nouri al-Maliki's government and "suppressed" by his Shiite-led security forces.

However, the worst security deterioration in Iraq began April 23 after the security forces cracked down on a Sunni Arab protest camp in the northern city of Hawijah.

The crackdown sparked fierce clashes across the country's predominantly Sunni provinces between the Sunni tribes and the security forces.

Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years which raises fears that the country is sliding back to full blown civil conflict that peaked in 2006 and 2007 when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Hearts, Minds and Dead Sunnis in Iraq

Sep 16 2014 5:12pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A critical part of America's plan to resolve all issues left unresolved after nine years of war and occupation is to divide the indigenous Sunnis from the "foreign" Sunnis, i.e., ISIS, and "unite" Iraq. As counter-insurgency theory teaches, bad guys can only thrive when they have local support, what Mao called the "water we swim in." There is a familiar ring to the plan. Unity Plan, 2006 In 2006 the U.S. brokered the ascension (reme ...

Muslims Will Support Muslims Over Infidel-Led Mission Against ISIS

Sep 16 2014 1:55pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In response to First U.S. degrade-and-destroy attack on ISIS lands... near Baghdad: Let me repeat myself. Muslims, regardless of whether they are Shia or Sunni, will not take part in an infidel-led war against their own people. Because of this, Iraqis will either support the ISIS cause, or will turn sit this fight out. The fact that ISIS has been able to prop up a military position just 15 miles from Baghdad, is very telling of the kind of defenses the Iraqi military ...

Baghdad Bishop Condones US Air Strikes Against ISIS

Sep 16 2014 1:38pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Today in Rome, the Chaldean Auxiliary Bishop of Baghdad, Shlemon Warduni, suggested that air strikes are useful as a deterrent measure against the militia of the Islamic State, according to the Italian ANSA news service. Air raids are a "means," Warduni said. Moreover, the IS jihadists "sow terror in people’s souls" and "these raids, too, sow a little fear." The United States launched separate air strikes Sunday and M ...

Obama Has No ISIS Strategy

Sep 16 2014 10:56am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Obama said a week ago he did not have a strategy to combat ISIS, and that now he does. He was right the first time. Oh, History The United States ignored ISIS for months. Then out of nowhere a complex situation morphed into a struggle to save the Yazidis from so-called genocide, requiring special forces and air strikes. The Yazidis disappeared from view, perhaps saved, certainly no longer needed as an emotional excuse to re-enter a war we had been told en ...
