US government in historic shutdown over Obamacare (Roundup)

Oct 1 2013, 9:48am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 1 (IANS) Americans Tuesday woke to a historic shutdown for the first time in 17 years as a midnight deadline passed without a budget deal between Republicans and Democrats on how to keep the government spending going.

Washington, Oct 1 — Americans Tuesday woke to a historic shutdown for the first time in 17 years as a midnight deadline passed without a budget deal between Republicans and Democrats on how to keep the government spending going.

Through the day the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and Democratic-controlled Senate, divided over President Barack Obama's signature health law nicknamed Obamacare, played ping-pong with each other's versions of a spending bill.

As the midnight hour struck with no agreement in sight over the budget for the new fiscal year beginning Tuesday, the White House ordered federal government agencies to begin shutting down, furloughing thousands of workers and curtailing some services.

It wasn't clear how long the shutdown was likely to last, or how exactly it might end. The previous shutdown, sparked by a budget battle between Democratic President Bill Clinton and a Republican Congress, lasted for 21 days in 1996.

Many of the close to 800,000 federal workers affected by the shutdown began arriving at their offices Tuesday amid uncertainty as national parks, monuments and museums, as well as most federal offices were set to close.

Tens of thousands of air-traffic controllers, prison guards and Border Patrol agents will be required to serve without pay.

And many congressional hearings - including one scheduled for Tuesday on last month's Washington Navy Yard shootings - will be postponed.

The move came after the Senate twice Monday tossed out House amendments to the spending bill, defunding Obamacare and sent it back to the House.

But a little more than an hour after the federal government began shutting down, House Republicans again voted to reaffirm Obamacare amendments and asked the Senate to convene a conference committee to work out their differences.

But even before it left the House, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had rejected it as "game-playing", and said: "We will not negotiate with a gun to our head."

The Senate was set to reject it again formally later Tuesday.

Earlier, chiding House Republicans for trying to undermine Obamacare, President Obama said: "You don't get to extract a ransom for doing your job, for doing what you're supposed to be doing anyway, where just because there's a law there that you don't like."

A new CNN/ORC poll shows that Americans are not happy about the prospect of a shutdown, with 68 percent of Americans saying shutting down the government for even a few days is a bad idea, while 27 percent think it's a good idea.

Most Americans also blamed congressional Republicans for a shutdown, 69 percent saying they agreed with the statement that the party's elected officials were acting like "spoiled children".

Democrats, however, weren't far behind with 58 percent of respondents saying they too were acting like spoiled kids.

Obama and Joel Osteen

Sep 2 2014 6:30pm CDT | Source: WND

“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” – Proverbs 29:18 I can’t blame Barack Obama for the sad state of America. Yes, he lied about what Obamacare was all about. Yes, he deceived about who he was and being constitutionally eligible for the office. Yes, he has broken both the spirit and the letter of the law while acting – and I do mean acting – as president of the United States. Nevertheles ...

Do Democrats really want a Hillary presidency?

Sep 2 2014 6:28pm CDT | Source: WND

The Democratic Party has got to know that Hillary Clinton’s track record in politics has been less than stellar. From the early days of the Bill Clinton White House, she has been dogged with missteps and scandal. We all remember how Bill practically made her the co-president and handed her the job of overhauling the health-care system – and we remember what a debacle that was. She was hounded by scandals and whispers of dirty deals she and Bill were involved in. Shady alliances and ...

Jim Crow is alive and well

In the op-ed “Black Town, White Power” by Jeff Smith (New York Times, Aug. 18), we learn that, since 2010, the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson is 67 percent black and 29 percent white. But “majority-black Ferguson has a virtually all-white power structure: a white mayor; a school board with six white members and one Hispanic, which recently suspended a young black superintendent who then resigned; a City Council with just one black member; and a 6 percent black police f ...

Fighting to Give You A Raise

Sep 2 2014 5:15pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This past Labor Day, President Barack Obama once again reminded us why Congress must increase the federal minimum wage. In America, the land of opportunity, no one who works 40 hours per week should be struggling to raise a family. Yet that is exactly what is happening. People in cities from Detroit to Chicago are demanding the long overdue pay raise that they deserve. At least 23 states have heard this call to action and raised their minimum wages above the ...

TALLINN, ESTONIA - Let's face it: NATO summits aren't usually the most scintillating gatherings. "President Obama has supposedly said that he finds these things dull," said Jeremy Shapiro, a fellow at the Brookings Institution. "Former Secretary of State Robert Gates reportedly wouldn’t go to NATO meetings unless his staff supplied him with a sufficient number of crossword puzzles." R ...

Even California Has Major Gripes With Obama, Poll Finds

Sep 2 2014 3:43pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama’s popularity in California has fallen to an all-time low, with his approval rating among voters down to just 45 percent, a Field Poll released Tuesday found. This is the first time his approval has dipped below 50 percent in the state since 2011 and is a 5-point drop from June, Field Poll founder and advisor Mervin Field and director Mark DiCamillo noted in a press release. It’s a stark contrast to the 62 percent positive rating he held in the firmly bl ...

Steyn: Difference in Obama Approach to Freeing Bergdahl vs Sotloff, Foley 'Fascinating'

Sep 2 2014 2:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In filling in for Rush Limbaugh on his Tuesday radio show, conservative commentator Mark Steyn pointed to a contrast in the different approach President Barack Obama went through to free U.S. Army Sgt. Beau Bergdahl from the Taliban versus the two decapitated journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley from ISIS. “There’s been these stories, actually I think it was broken by an old colleague of mine – Toby Harnden from The Daily Telegraph in London. I think he’s ...

Why Republican Control Of Congress Hinges On These 9 Races

Sep 2 2014 2:15pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This story was published by The Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative news organization in Washington, D.C. Whether Republicans control both chambers of Congress during President Barack Obama’s final two years in office squarely depends on a handful of U.S. Senate races now entering their final phase. So far in all Senate races, candidates, parties and other political power players have aired more than 428,000 television adve ...
