UN chief welcomes Security Council statement on Syria

Oct 2 2013, 6:12pm CDT | by IANS

United Nations, Oct 3 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday welcomed a Security Council statement on Syria, which called for unhindered humanitarian access in the war-torn country, Xinhua reported.

United Nations, Oct 3 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday welcomed a Security Council statement on Syria, which called for unhindered humanitarian access in the war-torn country, Xinhua reported.

"The secretary-general welcomes the presidential statement by the Security Council today that aims to address the horrifying humanitarian situation in Syria and illustrates the commitment of the international community to support the people caught up in the crisis," said a statement issued by Ban's spokesperson.

The UN chief noted that if the commitments and practical steps outlined in the statement are implemented, "humanitarian workers will be able to reach millions of Syrians in desperate need, many of whom have been unreachable for months".

The UN Security Council adopted the statement unanimously Wednesday morning, urging all parties in Syria "to take immediate steps to facilitate the expansion of humanitarian relief operations, and lift bureaucratic impediments and other obstacles".

The statement called on all parties "to take all appropriate steps to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel, those of its specialised agencies, and all other personnel engaged in humanitarian relief activities".

It also urged "all member states to respond swiftly to the United Nations' humanitarian appeals to meet the spiralling needs of people inside Syria, in particular internally displaced persons, and Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries, and to ensure that all pledges are honoured in full."

The 15-nation body warned that the humanitarian situation will continue to deteriorate in the absence of a political solution to the crisis.

The over-two-year conflict has produced one of the most dramatic exodus of recent years, with an estimated 4.25 million people internally displaced in the battle-weary nation.

California's Drought Requires Individual and Government Responses

Sep 11 2014 11:10am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In February, I wrote about the dire situation in California due to the ongoing drought. Sadly, conditions haven't improved. California continues to experience record drought conditions, with 2014 likely to become the third-driest year on record. This comes on the heels of two dry years. Most reservoirs in the state are at less than half of their maximum capacity. To cope with this, the Santa Clara Valley Water District in February se ...

"Zero emissions is an ambitious but achievable goal." --UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Zero has become the most important number for humanity. Why? Any chance of stabilizing the climate hinges on transitioning to zero greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as humanly possible. Simply slowing the rise of emissions will not work. For the first time, the world's leading climate authority, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has embr ...

Challenges to EPA's Proposed Carbon Rules: What If They Succeed?

Sep 4 2014 5:57pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Clean Power Plan proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency in June is the centerpiece of the Obama Administration's efforts to fight climate change. Coal-fired power plants are by far the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, and the EPA proposal would require the states to prepare plans to reduce those emissions. Members of Congress from states that mine or use a lot of coal are trying to halt this plan, and already three lawsuits have been filed ag ...
