Obama 'exasperated' by government shutdown

Oct 2 2013, 9:46pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 3 (IANs/EFE) US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he is "exasperated" by the lack of agreement that led to the paralysis of the federal government and warned that Wall Street "should be concerned" about the economic consequences.

Washington, Oct 3 (IANs/EFE) US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he is "exasperated" by the lack of agreement that led to the paralysis of the federal government and warned that Wall Street "should be concerned" about the economic consequences.

"And am I exasperated? Absolutely, I'm exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary," said Obama in an interview with CNBC.

"I am exasperated with the idea that unless I say to 20 million people, 'You can't have health insurance,' these folks will not reopen the government. That is irresponsible," he said.

The only thing stopping Republican House Speaker John Boehner from holding a vote on legislation to end the impasse is that the GOP leader "has not been willing to say no to a faction of the Republican Party that are willing to burn the house down because of an obsession over my health care initiative," Obama said.

He emphasised that he is ready to negotiate and to talk about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) can function better, but he is not going to do so under the "threat" of keeping the government closed down.

The US federal administration has been partially paralyzed since midnight Monday because of the lack of agreement in Congress over approving funds for the new fiscal year.

The more conservative wing of the Republicans is seeking to make that financing conditional on delaying the implementation of the ACA, Obama's signature domestic policy initiative.

When asked about the relative calm with which Wall Street has been reacting to the fiscal crisis, the president warned the business community against being complacent.

"This time I think Wall Street should be concerned," Obama said. "When you have a situation in which a faction is willing to default on US obligations, then we are in trouble."

Oct 28 2014 9:41am CDT | Source: Big Government

This story originally appeared in Politico Magazine:  When President Obama, after months of equivocation over how to respond to the takeover of parts of Iraq and Syria by radical militants, announced in September that the United States would “lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat,” the White House swung quickly into action, sending proposed legislation to train and equip Syrian rebels to Capitol Hill that same day.  Unfortunately, t ...

Bold Colors vs. Pale Pastels: Texas Sens. Ted Cruz, John Cornyn Differ on GOP Vision

Oct 23 2014 3:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

Texas' two Republican Senators disagree on what Republicans should prioritize if the party regains control of Congress.  Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who is considering a 2016 presidential run and is seen as the conservative voice in Congress, wants Republicans to try to repeal Obamacare and stop President Barack Obama's executive grants of amnesty. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who may become Majority Whip if the GOP wins a net of six Senate seats this year, believes Republican ...

White House: Order For Surge of Immigration ID's For 'Ongoing Operations'

Oct 22 2014 1:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed an order for a “surge” of immigration IDs of up to 9 million in one year, but said the move is no confirmation President Obama will issue a major executive amnesty after the election. “I think those who are trying to read into those specific orders about what the president may decide are a little too cleverly trying to divine what the president’s u ...

Oct 21 2014 11:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If Republicans gain control of Congress, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) wants more guest-worker visas for high-tech and low-skilled workers in addition to a piecemeal immigration reform. Hensarling, the House Financial Services Committee Chair whom the pro-amnesty Wall Street Journal touted as the "leading candidate to eventually succeed John Boehner as Speaker," would "like to see immigration reform that al ...

Coulter: This Election Is Too Important to Sit Out

Oct 21 2014 11:05pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Conservative columnist and author of “Never Trust a Liberal Over 3-Especially a Republican,” Ann Coulter argued that the 2014 election is too important for Republicans to sit out on Monday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. “If we have the Senate, too, with Mitch McConnell and John Boehner passing repeals of Obamacare and terrific things, the media won't be able to keep maintaining it’s Republicans who are doing nothing but passing birth control laws. They will have to report on the ...

House Race Between Carl DeMaio And Scott Peters Seems Like A TV Drama

Oct 21 2014 9:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A late-night break-in, a stolen campaign playbook that ended up in the hands of the opponent and sexual harassment accusations made by a fired staffer against one of the candidates. It sounds like a soap opera, but it's a real-life race for a House seat in California that's one of the tightest in the country, and perhaps, the most dramatic. No criminal charges have been filed. The competitors in the ...

Studies Show GOP Can Win Elections Opposing Amnesty in 2014: Impact of Latino Vote Overrated

Oct 21 2014 5:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Despite the incessant lectures from the mainstream press, establishment Republican politicians, and consultants about the need to pass amnesty legislation to appeal to Hispanic voters, two recent studies of the Latino electorate suggest that Republicans can oppose amnesty and still win elections in the midterms and beyond.  A Pew Hispanic Research study found that though a record 25.2 million Latinos (11 percent of e ...

Politicians Are No Scientists On Climate Change, But They're Happy To Give Medical Opinions On Ebola

Oct 21 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"I'm not a scientist, but …" has become something of a cliché among politicians who want to weigh in on climate science without actually having to say whether they believe it. But when it comes to Ebola, a number of the same not-a-scientist politicians have been more than happy to provide their medical opinions, as Think Progress documented Monday. Many of these politicians have made false statements about Ebola, from claiming ...
