Obama 'exasperated' by government shutdown

Oct 2 2013, 9:46pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 3 (IANs/EFE) US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he is "exasperated" by the lack of agreement that led to the paralysis of the federal government and warned that Wall Street "should be concerned" about the economic consequences.

Washington, Oct 3 (IANs/EFE) US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he is "exasperated" by the lack of agreement that led to the paralysis of the federal government and warned that Wall Street "should be concerned" about the economic consequences.

"And am I exasperated? Absolutely, I'm exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary," said Obama in an interview with CNBC.

"I am exasperated with the idea that unless I say to 20 million people, 'You can't have health insurance,' these folks will not reopen the government. That is irresponsible," he said.

The only thing stopping Republican House Speaker John Boehner from holding a vote on legislation to end the impasse is that the GOP leader "has not been willing to say no to a faction of the Republican Party that are willing to burn the house down because of an obsession over my health care initiative," Obama said.

He emphasised that he is ready to negotiate and to talk about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) can function better, but he is not going to do so under the "threat" of keeping the government closed down.

The US federal administration has been partially paralyzed since midnight Monday because of the lack of agreement in Congress over approving funds for the new fiscal year.

The more conservative wing of the Republicans is seeking to make that financing conditional on delaying the implementation of the ACA, Obama's signature domestic policy initiative.

When asked about the relative calm with which Wall Street has been reacting to the fiscal crisis, the president warned the business community against being complacent.

"This time I think Wall Street should be concerned," Obama said. "When you have a situation in which a faction is willing to default on US obligations, then we are in trouble."

Sep 23 2014 10:51am CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said in a statement Tuesday that he supports military actions against ISIS—like the airstrikes President Obama just launched—but that the Constitution requires Obama to obtain congressional approval for such action. The current and immediate past chairmen of the House Homeland Security Committee have publicly backed President Barack Obama’s airstrikes against ISIS in Syria, despite the fact the president did not seek congressional approval for them “When in times of war and of peace it is important that we come together as a nation,” Rep. America -- poised for collapse

Sep 22 2014 6:46pm CDT | Source: WND

America stands on the very brink of collapse, and I believe the indications are such that if she doesn’t collapse in my lifetime, she will in my son’s. If that scares you, it should. America is in trouble such as she has never experienced in her history, and it is trouble of our own making. I could lie to you and subscribe to falsities such as if we get rid of Obama and replace him with a “you fil ...

Sep 22 2014 12:38pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Twenty-two percent of workers laid off in the past five years are still unemployed, according to a new survey. The John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University surveyed more than 1,100 workers, including nearly 400 who are unemployed. A slim majority of laid-off workers in the survey, or 54 percent, said they received unemployment insurance when they lost their jobs. However, 83 percent of those who received be ...

Every Senate Republican Votes To Stop Obama’s Immigration Relief

Sep 19 2014 10:55am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Screengrab Every Republican senator voted in support of a (failed) effort to thwart President Obama’s executive action on immigration Wednesday. The largely symbolic procedural vote would have allowed senators to bring up a subsequent vote to block Obama’s authority to expand immigration relief in the absence of congressional reform. But Republican unanimity on the anti-immigrant measure stands in stark contrast to the positions of many of these senators. A ...

Biology Major Bobby Jindal Pleads Ignorance On Evolution and Climate Science

Sep 18 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Shutterstock House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) says he can’t be expected to know about climate science because he is “not a scientist.” Same for Florida Governor Rick Scott (R), Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). But what happens when a highly educated guy who did study science in college wants to run for national office in a party that increasingly stands against facts and science? In the case o ...

The Key Political Truth About Climate Change: It's About Our Families

Sep 18 2014 7:10am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When my husband collapsed at a small gathering a few weeks ago, climate change was the farthest thing from my mind. I was too consumed with getting him to the hospital, holding his hand through the pain, and trying to appear calm when his legs stopped working. Later when doctors entered the room in protective gear, told us Don had meningitis, and said that it was often linked to West Nile Virus, the link still ...
