Obama 'exasperated' by government shutdown

Oct 2 2013, 9:46pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 3 (IANs/EFE) US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he is "exasperated" by the lack of agreement that led to the paralysis of the federal government and warned that Wall Street "should be concerned" about the economic consequences.

Washington, Oct 3 (IANs/EFE) US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he is "exasperated" by the lack of agreement that led to the paralysis of the federal government and warned that Wall Street "should be concerned" about the economic consequences.

"And am I exasperated? Absolutely, I'm exasperated, because this is entirely unnecessary," said Obama in an interview with CNBC.

"I am exasperated with the idea that unless I say to 20 million people, 'You can't have health insurance,' these folks will not reopen the government. That is irresponsible," he said.

The only thing stopping Republican House Speaker John Boehner from holding a vote on legislation to end the impasse is that the GOP leader "has not been willing to say no to a faction of the Republican Party that are willing to burn the house down because of an obsession over my health care initiative," Obama said.

He emphasised that he is ready to negotiate and to talk about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) can function better, but he is not going to do so under the "threat" of keeping the government closed down.

The US federal administration has been partially paralyzed since midnight Monday because of the lack of agreement in Congress over approving funds for the new fiscal year.

The more conservative wing of the Republicans is seeking to make that financing conditional on delaying the implementation of the ACA, Obama's signature domestic policy initiative.

When asked about the relative calm with which Wall Street has been reacting to the fiscal crisis, the president warned the business community against being complacent.

"This time I think Wall Street should be concerned," Obama said. "When you have a situation in which a faction is willing to default on US obligations, then we are in trouble."

2014 Campaign Ads: The Best, The Weirdest, The Worst

Nov 4 2014 4:13pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

With another midterm election very nearly in the books, it's time to take stock of the cycle's campaign ads. The best of the best inspired us with full-hearted positivity, shrewd arguments and personal stories that humanized the candidates. The worst of the bunch featured easily punctured deceptions, shameless exploitation of tragedies real and imagined, and desperate measures undertaken by justifiably doomed competitors. Meanwhile, somewhere in the ...

The Price of Failure and Rise of Extremism: How Democrats Blew It

Nov 4 2014 8:09am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Politicians of all stripes since the dawn of time have perfected the art of feigned regret and false outrage in the face of opposition, while embracing blind indifference to their own failures. Standard fare for the left and right. But the depth, intensity, and institutionalized hypocrisy of the political right has taken our country on a new course; conservatives are writing a new chapter if not a new book on cynicism, deceit and delusion. As we contemplat ...

What a Republican Senate Would Mean for World Politics

Nov 4 2014 7:54am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On Tuesday, when tens of millions of US voters go to the polls, they are very likely to deliver a US Senate majority to the Republican Party. Six years into the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama and four years after the midterm elections that delivered control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans and conservative Speaker John Boehner, most polls and poll aggregate forecasts give the Republicans anywhere from a strong (70 ...

Senate Control Is The Top Prize In The Midterm Election

Nov 4 2014 7:37am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Public campaigning gave way to the privacy of the voting booth Tuesday with control of the Senate, the makeup of the House and three dozen governorships at stake. President Barack Obama, his approval ratings low, was not on the ballot midway through his second term. But even he said his policies were, and Republicans rushed to agree. "The president's policies have just flat-out failed," House Speaker John Boehner said Monday, campaigning for a 1 ...

Against Obama, but for what?

Nov 3 2014 6:17pm CST | Source: WND

After billions in attack ads that turned the approval ratings of almost every candidate, in both parties, upside down, Republicans appear primed to take control of Congress. Why are Democrats falling like dominoes? Easy. Theirs is the Party of Government. And government is failing. And their leader Obama projects diffidence and incompetence. National surveys also show that large majorities believe America is heading in the wrong ...

Blacking Out the Vote

Nov 3 2014 3:54pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Voters are facing an ugly surprise on their way to the voting booth on Tuesday. What most people don't realize is that since 2006, some 34 state legislatures have worked diligently to chip away at the fundamental right to vote -- and overwhelmingly, people of color are the target. This year alone, 14 states have implemented legislation that would end same-day voter registration, limit early voting, and require voters to present forms of ID that many voters lack and ca ...

Vladimir Putin's Military Is Buzzing Europe Because Sanctions Are Working

Nov 3 2014 1:42pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Not a day goes by without hearing a story about some Russian military craft getting closer to a NATO country. Many in the West wonder why. Could it be that Vladimir Putin intends to swallow up Europe? Is he flexing his muscles once again? Is it a test of President Barack Obama's leadership? Is it about creating dissension in the ranks? Actually, none of these are likely to be the reason. Puti ...

Vote/Voto!

Nov 3 2014 8:23am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It's a race to the finish line, but Republicans seem to have a decisive edge in Tuesday's midterm elections. Should the Republicans gain control of the Senate, they will control both houses of Congress and the consequences will be dramatic. Turnout in the 2014 midterm elections may reach a record low. Yet, the outcome may affect every American. The gridlock that currently plagues Washington will only increase w ...

They Hope You Won't Wake Up

Nov 3 2014 6:34am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Here's the bottom line. The Tea Party Republicans and their Big Business and Wall Street allies plan to grab what they want while ordinary people sleep through this election. They want ordinary Americans to stay home on Election Day. To them, high voter turnout is like daylight to a burglar - or for that matter to a vampire. It stops them cold. The corporate CEO's and Wall Street bankers together with T ...

Scott Brown: Veterans 'Resent' Jeanne Shaheen for Calling American Troops 'Occupiers'

Oct 31 2014 12:34pm CDT | Source: Big Government

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — One of the most memorable lines from Thursday evening’s final debate between incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and former Sen. Scott Brown came when Brown accused Shaheen of comparing America’s armed forces to “occupiers.” “I don’t think we should take tens of thousands of American troops and put them back into Iraq as an occupying force,” Shaheen said when asked by debate co-moderator George Stephanopoulos of ABC News if she’d sup ...
