Amid shutdown stalemate, hope over debt limit

Oct 4 2013, 12:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 4 (IANS) As US President Barack Obama launched a blistering attack on Republicans for their "reckless" refusal to pass a "clean" spending bill to end the government shutdown, a ray of hope emerged on the looming debt limit crisis.

Washington, Oct 4 — As US President Barack Obama launched a blistering attack on Republicans for their "reckless" refusal to pass a "clean" spending bill to end the government shutdown, a ray of hope emerged on the looming debt limit crisis.

House Speaker John Boehner, whom Obama Thursday challenged to quickly hold a vote on a "clean" spending bill with no conditions to dump or delay his signature healthcare law, was reported to have told fellow Republicans he won't let the nation default on its debt.

Boehner, according to various media reports, told party legislators at a private gathering that he would be willing to rely on Democrats to do so by setting aside the so called "Hastert Rule" by which Republicans bring only those measures for a vote that are backed by a majority of their caucus.

Congressional Republicans remain divided on how to structure legislation to raise the federal debt ceiling to avoid having the US default on its obligations. Officials say US is set to run out of money to cover its roughly $16.7 trillion debt by Oct 17.

Boehner's reported willingness to turn to Democrats to prevent a US debt default came shortly after Obama and his Treasury Department warned that a default on US debts would be worse than the closure and could trigger another global financial crisis like the one in 2008.

"As reckless as a government shutdown is... an economic shutdown that results from default would be dramatically worse," Obama said during an appearance Thursday at a construction company in Rockville, Maryland, just outside of Washington.

With no end to the stalemate in sight, Obama suggested Boehner is preventing a vote on a funding bill because he doesn't want to anger tea party "extremists" in his party, who want to derail his signature healthcare law.

Boehner is the only thing standing in the way of reopening the federal government, he said calling on the Republican leader to bring a "clean" bill before the House and predicting it would pass with bipartisan support.

Democratic controlled Senate has rejected three attempts by Republican-run House to pass a bill paying for government services while also trying to delay all or parts of the health care law.

Obama and other Democrats have said they're willing to negotiate a broad budget deal that could include tax reforms and other matters, but only willing after the government reopens.

"This whole thing is about one thing," Obama said. "The Republican obsession with dismantling the Affordable Care Act."

The longer the shutdown goes on, the worse the impact on the US economy will be, Obama said as the Treasury Department warned amid an impasse over raising the country's debt-limit that mere prospect of default endangers economy.

"Political brinksmanship that engenders even the prospect of a default can be disruptive to financial markets and American businesses and families," the Treasury Department said in a report released Thursday.

Bold Colors vs. Pale Pastels: Texas Sens. Ted Cruz, John Cornyn Differ on GOP Vision

Oct 23 2014 3:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

Texas' two Republican Senators disagree on what Republicans should prioritize if the party regains control of Congress.  Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who is considering a 2016 presidential run and is seen as the conservative voice in Congress, wants Republicans to try to repeal Obamacare and stop President Barack Obama's executive grants of amnesty. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who may become Majority Whip if the GOP wins a net of six Senate seats this year, believes ...

White House: Order For Surge of Immigration ID's For 'Ongoing Operations'

Oct 22 2014 1:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed an order for a “surge” of immigration IDs of up to 9 million in one year, but said the move is no confirmation President Obama will issue a major executive amnesty after the election. “I think those who are trying to read into those specific orders about what the president may decide are a little too cleverly trying to divine what the president’s ultimate conclusion might be,” he said. A ...

Hensarling: GOP-Controlled Congress Should Massively Increase Guest-Worker Permits for Foreigners

Oct 21 2014 11:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If Republicans gain control of Congress, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) wants more guest-worker visas for high-tech and low-skilled workers in addition to a piecemeal immigration reform. Hensarling, the House Financial Services Committee Chair whom the pro-amnesty Wall Street Journal touted as the "leading candidate to eventually succeed John Boehner as Speaker," would "like to see immigration reform that allows more H-1 ...

Coulter: This Election Is Too Important to Sit Out

Oct 21 2014 11:05pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Conservative columnist and author of “Never Trust a Liberal Over 3-Especially a Republican,” Ann Coulter argued that the 2014 election is too important for Republicans to sit out on Monday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. “If we have the Senate, too, with Mitch McConnell and John Boehner passing repeals of Obamacare and terrific things, the media won't be able to keep maintaining it’s Republicans who are doing nothing ...

House Race Between Carl DeMaio And Scott Peters Seems Like A TV Drama

Oct 21 2014 9:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A late-night break-in, a stolen campaign playbook that ended up in the hands of the opponent and sexual harassment accusations made by a fired staffer against one of the candidates. It sounds like a soap opera, but it's a real-life race for a House seat in California that's one of the tightest in the country, and perhaps, the most dramatic. No criminal charges have been filed. The competitors in the congressional race are first-term Democratic R ...

Studies Show GOP Can Win Elections Opposing Amnesty in 2014: Impact of Latino Vote Overrated

Oct 21 2014 5:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Despite the incessant lectures from the mainstream press, establishment Republican politicians, and consultants about the need to pass amnesty legislation to appeal to Hispanic voters, two recent studies of the Latino electorate suggest that Republicans can oppose amnesty and still win elections in the midterms and beyond.  A Pew Hispanic Research study found that though a record 25.2 million Latinos (11 percent of eligible voters nationwide) are eligible ...

Politicians Are No Scientists On Climate Change, But They're Happy To Give Medical Opinions On Ebola

Oct 21 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"I'm not a scientist, but …" has become something of a cliché among politicians who want to weigh in on climate science without actually having to say whether they believe it. But when it comes to Ebola, a number of the same not-a-scientist politicians have been more than happy to provide their medical opinions, as Think Progress documented Monday. Many of these politicians have made false statements about Ebola, from claiming one could catch it at a cocktai ...

Contemplating A Republican Senate

Oct 20 2014 7:45pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As frightening a prospect as it is for progressives and liberals and other assorted Democrats, it is now impossible not to contemplate what two years of a Republican-led Senate would be like. While Democrats are still putting on a brave face about their chances in the 2014 midterms ("Our ground game is going to win the day!"), the possibility of Republicans picking up the six Senate seats they now need to gain control of the chamber is very real and even (according to many el ...
