Amid shutdown stalemate, hope over debt limit

Oct 4 2013, 12:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 4 (IANS) As US President Barack Obama launched a blistering attack on Republicans for their "reckless" refusal to pass a "clean" spending bill to end the government shutdown, a ray of hope emerged on the looming debt limit crisis.

Washington, Oct 4 — As US President Barack Obama launched a blistering attack on Republicans for their "reckless" refusal to pass a "clean" spending bill to end the government shutdown, a ray of hope emerged on the looming debt limit crisis.

House Speaker John Boehner, whom Obama Thursday challenged to quickly hold a vote on a "clean" spending bill with no conditions to dump or delay his signature healthcare law, was reported to have told fellow Republicans he won't let the nation default on its debt.

Boehner, according to various media reports, told party legislators at a private gathering that he would be willing to rely on Democrats to do so by setting aside the so called "Hastert Rule" by which Republicans bring only those measures for a vote that are backed by a majority of their caucus.

Congressional Republicans remain divided on how to structure legislation to raise the federal debt ceiling to avoid having the US default on its obligations. Officials say US is set to run out of money to cover its roughly $16.7 trillion debt by Oct 17.

Boehner's reported willingness to turn to Democrats to prevent a US debt default came shortly after Obama and his Treasury Department warned that a default on US debts would be worse than the closure and could trigger another global financial crisis like the one in 2008.

"As reckless as a government shutdown is... an economic shutdown that results from default would be dramatically worse," Obama said during an appearance Thursday at a construction company in Rockville, Maryland, just outside of Washington.

With no end to the stalemate in sight, Obama suggested Boehner is preventing a vote on a funding bill because he doesn't want to anger tea party "extremists" in his party, who want to derail his signature healthcare law.

Boehner is the only thing standing in the way of reopening the federal government, he said calling on the Republican leader to bring a "clean" bill before the House and predicting it would pass with bipartisan support.

Democratic controlled Senate has rejected three attempts by Republican-run House to pass a bill paying for government services while also trying to delay all or parts of the health care law.

Obama and other Democrats have said they're willing to negotiate a broad budget deal that could include tax reforms and other matters, but only willing after the government reopens.

"This whole thing is about one thing," Obama said. "The Republican obsession with dismantling the Affordable Care Act."

The longer the shutdown goes on, the worse the impact on the US economy will be, Obama said as the Treasury Department warned amid an impasse over raising the country's debt-limit that mere prospect of default endangers economy.

"Political brinksmanship that engenders even the prospect of a default can be disruptive to financial markets and American businesses and families," the Treasury Department said in a report released Thursday.

Biology Major Bobby Jindal Pleads Ignorance On Evolution and Climate Science

Sep 18 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Shutterstock House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) says he can’t be expected to know about climate science because he is “not a scientist.” Same for Florida Governor Rick Scott (R), Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). But what happens when a highly educated guy who did study science in college wants to run for national office in a party that increasingly stands against facts and science? In the case of Louisiana Governor ...

The Key Political Truth About Climate Change: It's About Our Families

Sep 18 2014 7:10am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When my husband collapsed at a small gathering a few weeks ago, climate change was the farthest thing from my mind. I was too consumed with getting him to the hospital, holding his hand through the pain, and trying to appear calm when his legs stopped working. Later when doctors entered the room in protective gear, told us Don had meningitis, and said that it was often linked to West Nile Virus, the link still didn't quite compute. I ...

WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to audit the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, a broadly bipartisan call for financial reform that accompanied two other bipartisan votes providing government perks to Wall Street on everything from higher mortgage fees to speculation in securities markets. The votes underscore unique tensions among both Republicans and Democrats. All three bills garnered strong Republican majorities while essentially splitting Democrats do ...

The Government Accountability Office (GAO), the non-partisan government watchdog, has issued a new report that identifies 1,036 Obamacare plans that cover abortion on demand at the expense of taxpayers through subsidies, a fact that confirms the provision in the health reform law requiring individuals to pay separately for abortion coverage is being widely ignored. As FoxNews.com reports, Republican lawmakers say the “bombshell” finding demonstrates the Obam ...

Mr. Obama, Man Up, Talk to Assad

Sep 17 2014 1:57pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

One of the things that I liked most about Barack Obama when he was first running for the US Presidency was his philosophy about talking to one's enemies. In a presidential debate on July 24, 2007 with Senator John McCain, candidate Obama was asked the following question: "In 1982 (the year was actually 1977), Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that h ...

Here's How States Are Working Around GOP Food Stamp Cuts

Sep 17 2014 9:04am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cuts to the nation's food stamp program enacted this year are only affecting four states, far from the sweeping overhaul that Republicans had pushed, an Associated Press review has found. As a result, it's unclear whether the law will realize the estimated $8.6 billion in savings over 10 years that the GOP had advertised. A farm bill signed by President Barack Obama in February ...

Three Years Later, What Has Come of Occupy Wall Street?

Sep 17 2014 12:56am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This week marks the third anniversary of protesters descending on Wall Street to protest the havoc wrought by the 2008 Financial Meltdown, which had hit all Americans hard, except for the ones who had caused it. What began as an open call from Adbusters to show up with a tent grew from dozens to hundreds, to thousands, to tens of thousands. Far from rejecting the extended sit-in, area businesses ...
