A wild car chase and a lockdown amid US shutdown

Oct 4 2013, 12:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 4 (IANS) Amid a government shutdown, a woman with a one year-old girl led police on a wild car chase from the White House to the US Capitol before being shot and killed, forcing a short-lived lockdown of the legislative complex.

Washington, Oct 4 — Amid a government shutdown, a woman with a one year-old girl led police on a wild car chase from the White House to the US Capitol before being shot and killed, forcing a short-lived lockdown of the legislative complex.

Thursday's incident that officials said was not an accident, but apparently also not part of any larger or organized terrorist plot, sent shockwaves through the American capital coming as it did just two weeks after the Navy Yard shooting that claimed 12 lives.

The chase began around 2:15 p.m. when the woman rammed the outer gate at the White House with her Black Infiniti sedan and then sped down Pennsylvania Avenue towards the Capitol Hill, police said.

Dramatic video taken minutes later near the US Capitol showed the vehicle backing into a police vehicle before the chase resumed. Gunshots rang through the traffic circle. The motorist was shot by police just a few blocks away.

The woman identified as Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, had a 1-year-old child inside and apparently was unarmed. But her car itself became a weapon, police said.

House and Senate sessions were immediately suspended, with legislators ordered to take cover and keep away from windows. Police also closed Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.

Security perimeters at the White House and Capitol worked, DC Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier told reporters. "They did exactly what they were supposed to do," she said.

A Capitol Police officer whose vehicle crashed during the chase also was hurt, authorities said. The officer was released from a local hospital Thursday night. The Secret Service did not release information about its injured agent.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation, which occurred on the third day of a government shutdown due to a stalemate in Congress over government funding.

"The timing on this was really kind of scary," Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold told CNN. "Capitol Hill police are at a lower personnel level because of the shutdown."

Authorities lauded the action of police, some of whom aren't being paid because of the government shutdown and will receive their pay checks only after the government reopens.

A Lack of Prevention and a Startling Statistic

Jul 30 2014 11:23am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In the United States, there is a prescription drug monitoring program that helps health care providers determine which patients are "doctor shopping" and which doctors they are seeing to do so. The prescription drug monitoring program also keeps track of which patients are getting what medications, at what dose, and so on so when they do go to see their doctor, he or she can have record of ...

Karl Rove: Shame on Conservative Republicans Who Are Floating Impeachment

Jul 30 2014 7:28am CDT | Source: Big Government

Campaign strategist Karl Rove denounced talk about Republicans impeaching President Obama, including White House efforts to stoke the rumors. On Fox News Wednesday morning, Rove referred to Obama as the “cynic in chief” who was fueling the rumors for the sake of fundraising. “How cynical. How pathetic,” he said. Rove reminded the audience that House Speaker John Boehner denied that Republicans had any plans to impeach the president, blaming some conservative Republicans for helping O ...

The Cost of Surveillance

Jul 30 2014 7:20am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

American foreign policy has long been an exercise of divided labor. For more than fifty years, we have parceled out responsibility for guiding America's path in the world among the Departments of State and Defense, the CIA, the NSA, and other smaller agencies. This arrangement has always presented challenges, but has come to a head with the latest wave of embarrassing revelations regarding our nation's espionage activities ...

"There aren’t a lot of functioning democracies around the world that work this way where you can basically have millionaires and billionaires bankrolling whoever they want, however they want, in some cases undisclosed. What it means is ordinary Americans are shut out of the process." Barack Obama, White House press conference, Oct 2013. Yes, indeed. But the millionaires and billionaires doing ...

What We Still Don't Know About Richard Nixon

Jul 30 2014 7:00am CDT | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

Evan Thomas: "Richard Nixon taped roughly 3,700 hours of his conversations as president. About 3,000 hours of those tapes have been released, while the rest remain closed to protect family privacy or national security. The public has a general impression of what's on the Nixon White House tapes--the expletives deleted, the so-called "smoking gun" when Nixon appeared to try to use the CI ...

Perry Calls Shaheen an Embarrassment Over Border Security

Jul 30 2014 6:36am CDT | Source: Big Government

Texas Gov. Rick Perry waded into the New Hampshire Senate race on a conference call with reporters, "I would be embarrassed if I was from New Hampshire and I had a United States senator who was so with the president on this issue that it's putting the citizens — not just in New Hampshire, but in the other 47 contiguous states — in jeopardy by not securing the border."  The move is likely as much about Perry's 201 ...

Turning the Midterms Into a Base Election

Jul 30 2014 5:04am CDT | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

First Read: "So both sides are playing this cynical game, turning the midterms into a base election that will be decided by who best motivates their base rather than by trying to fix the country's problems.
