A wild car chase and a lockdown amid US shutdown

Oct 4 2013, 12:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 4 (IANS) Amid a government shutdown, a woman with a one year-old girl led police on a wild car chase from the White House to the US Capitol before being shot and killed, forcing a short-lived lockdown of the legislative complex.

Washington, Oct 4 — Amid a government shutdown, a woman with a one year-old girl led police on a wild car chase from the White House to the US Capitol before being shot and killed, forcing a short-lived lockdown of the legislative complex.

Thursday's incident that officials said was not an accident, but apparently also not part of any larger or organized terrorist plot, sent shockwaves through the American capital coming as it did just two weeks after the Navy Yard shooting that claimed 12 lives.

The chase began around 2:15 p.m. when the woman rammed the outer gate at the White House with her Black Infiniti sedan and then sped down Pennsylvania Avenue towards the Capitol Hill, police said.

Dramatic video taken minutes later near the US Capitol showed the vehicle backing into a police vehicle before the chase resumed. Gunshots rang through the traffic circle. The motorist was shot by police just a few blocks away.

The woman identified as Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, had a 1-year-old child inside and apparently was unarmed. But her car itself became a weapon, police said.

House and Senate sessions were immediately suspended, with legislators ordered to take cover and keep away from windows. Police also closed Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.

Security perimeters at the White House and Capitol worked, DC Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier told reporters. "They did exactly what they were supposed to do," she said.

A Capitol Police officer whose vehicle crashed during the chase also was hurt, authorities said. The officer was released from a local hospital Thursday night. The Secret Service did not release information about its injured agent.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the situation, which occurred on the third day of a government shutdown due to a stalemate in Congress over government funding.

"The timing on this was really kind of scary," Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold told CNN. "Capitol Hill police are at a lower personnel level because of the shutdown."

Authorities lauded the action of police, some of whom aren't being paid because of the government shutdown and will receive their pay checks only after the government reopens.

Aug 26 2014 6:59pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The White House has indicated that President Obama will take some kind of executive action on immigration at the end of summer, but the administration has been tight-lipped about the specifics of such a move. Reports have indicated that the executive action could provide legalization for some five million undocumented immigrants already in the United States – something Lisa Navarrete, adviser to the president of La Raza, explained to Breitbart News in a Tuesday interview would be welcome but ...

Marco Rubio Hints At A Government Shutdown Fight Over Immigration

Aug 26 2014 6:05pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) contends that unilateral action by President Barack Obama on immigration, which is expected this fall, will doom future chances for reform by poisoning the well in Congress. The one-time champion for comprehensive immigration reform wants Senate Republicans to combat the likely executive action through the budget process when Congress returns in September. "There will have to be some sort of a budget vote or a continuing resolution vote, so I a ...

Feeble clapping for Obama's VA speech

Aug 26 2014 4:49pm CDT | Source: WND

(DAILYMAIL) — President Barack Obama faced a tough crowd on Tuesday – American military veterans – and fell flat on his applause lines as he failed to win over the American Legion’s convention-goers. His 35-minute speech seemed to have reminded the audience of the stark divide between the White House’s policy choices and the feelings of the men and women often called on to carry them out. A Virginia legionnaire who served i ...
