Shutdown is no game, say US lawmakers

Oct 5 2013, 1:00am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 5 (IANS) As the political stalemate over the US federal government shutdown over President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law headed into its fifth day, his Democrats and opposition Republicans slammed each other, saying it was no game.

Washington, Oct 5 — As the political stalemate over the US federal government shutdown over President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law headed into its fifth day, his Democrats and opposition Republicans slammed each other, saying it was no game.

With both sides digging in, Obama cancelled a trip to Asia to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bali, Indonesia and a separate Asia security summit in Brunei to fight the ongoing shutdown battle and the looming crisis over US debt-limit.

Obama, who had earlier cancelled visits to Malaysia and the Philippines, made the decision to show "his determination to continue pressing his case that Republicans should immediately allow a vote to reopen the government", said the White House.

Then rolling up their shirt sleeves, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden strolled out of the White House Friday to nearby Taylor Gourmet deli that was offering a discount to furloughed federal employees going without a pay cheque.

"I'm happy to have negotiations but we can't do it with a gun held to the head of the American people. There's no winning when federal workers aren't getting paid - even if they have to work," Obama said as he waited for his sandwich.

He was responding to reporters' question about a story in the Wall Street Journal that quoted an anonymous senior administration official as saying the White House was "winning" in the clash over the shutdown, and that the length of the shutdown "doesn't really matter to us".

He placed the blame for the stalemate on Republican House speaker John Boehner, saying there are enough votes to end the shutdown immediately if the speaker would call a vote of his members.

Meanwhile, Boehner too mentioned the quote at the top of a news conference on Capitol Hill.

"This morning, I get the WSJ out and it says, 'I don't care how long this lasts because we are winning.' This isn't some damn game!," said an angry Boehner as he slammed the newspaper onto the podium.

"The American people don't want their government shut down and neither do I. All we are asking for is to sit down and have a discussion, reopen government and to bring fairness to the American people under Obamacare," he said.

After Boehner's remarks, White House spokesperson Jay Carney agreed on Twitter that "it's no game" and called on the speaker to let the House vote on a clean continuing resolution that funds the government all at once.

The White House also released a statement saying they would "strongly oppose" a "piecemeal" approach by the House to gradually re-open the government bit by bit.

Aug 27 2014 8:18pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is trying to determine if a second American fighting with the Islamic State group has been killed in Syria. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Wednesday that the U.S. has no independent confirmation of reports of a second American killed while fighting with the militant group. "We're looking into it," she said. NBC cited an anonymous member of the opposition Free Syrian Army as saying two Americans were killed in a battle last week w ...

Women Don't Think The GOP Cares About Them, Internal Report Confirms

Aug 27 2014 7:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A new internal Republican report confirmed that women are not fans of the GOP, and Republicans have more work to do if they want the female vote. The report, which was obtained by Politico, found that although Republicans have tried to improve outreach to female voters, women still believe the party is "stuck in the past" and "intolerant." Forty-nine percent of women polled for the r ...

Rand Paul: Obama 'Can't Just Do What He Wants. He Is Not a King'

Aug 27 2014 7:17pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Wednesday’s “On the Record” on the Fox News Channel, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) excoriated President Barack Obama for his reported “end-around” of Congress to enact climate change policy. Paul said the act would exceed just an abuse power, but would amount to constitutional crisis. “Not only is it an abuse of power, I think it almost leads us to a constitutional crisis of sorts,” Paul said. “It’s one thing after another. Y ...

How Obama aided ISIS

Aug 27 2014 6:54pm CDT | Source: WND

Perhaps the single costliest, most demonstrable crime of Barack Obama’s time in office is what he did to fuel the rise of the army of the Islamic State in Syria, which now threatens to take over Syria, Iraq and other Middle East while murdering thousands and posing an extreme terrorist threat to the U.S. Obama claims not to have seen this coming. But others certainly did. Two years ago, I pointed out that Obama w ...

Black-on-white cop shooting tests media integrity

Aug 27 2014 6:52pm CDT | Source: WND

OK, I know, the phrase “media integrity” may strike the reader as an oxymoron like, say, “postal service.” But the post office, for all its faults, defies the oxymoron by delivering my mail 99 percent of the time. As was evident in Ferguson, Missouri, the major media – CNN most disgracefully – made no effort at all to undo their oxymoronic reputation. Indeed, the word “moronic” does no injustice to the coverage. The shooting of Dillon Taylor in South Salt Lake, Utah, two days after the shooti ...

Another Ferguson? Oops, wrong race, never mind

Aug 27 2014 6:47pm CDT | Source: WND

Why has there been no media interest in the police shooting of an apparently unarmed suspect in Salt Lake City? Just two days after the shooting death of Michael Brown, an officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old. The Salt Lake City Police Department equips some of its officers with cameras. The department confirmed the officer who shot had a camera and that footage of the confrontation and shooting was captured, b ...

Removing the threat

Aug 27 2014 6:42pm CDT | Source: WND

Dear Mr. Farah: “What does a nation do when its highest official represents the biggest security threat it faces?” may be the most important question ever asked at WND. It’s a question on the minds of millions of anguished Americans. Taking it to the next level: What does a nation do when its highest official represents the biggest security threat it faces, and neither the courts nor the Congress act to remove the source of the “existential thr ...
