Obama to meet lawmakers to end deadlock over shutdown

Oct 9 2013, 10:44am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 9 (IANS) As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

Washington, Oct 9 — As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

House Democrats have been invited to the White House Wednesday afternoon. Senate Democrats, House Republicans and Senate Republicans will be asked to attend similar sessions in the coming days, a White House official said Wednesday.

The meetings signalling the beginning of an attempt to avert a damaging debt default came as the Republicans Tuesday rebuffed President Barack Obama's offer to negotiate if the shutdown was ended and US debt limit was raised first.

"I will not eliminate any topic of conversation, and I've shown myself willing to engage all the parties involved, any leader on the issue," Obama said Tuesday with the Oct 17 deadline when the Treasury says it would run out of money to pay US debts just over a week away.

"The only thing I will say is that we're not going to pay a ransom for America paying its bills. That's something that should be non-negotiable," he said.

"Let's lift these threats from our families and our businesses and let's get down to work," Obama said, chiding Republicans for their tactics in dealing with the twin issues.

Failing to raise the debt ceiling "would be dramatically worse" than a government shutdown and posed a "very significant risk" of a deep recession, Obama warned.

John Boehner, Speaker of the Republican controlled House, immediately rejected Obama's offer saying the president's position was "unsustainable".

"What the president said today was if there's unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us," Boehner said.

"At times like this the American people expect their leaders to sit down and have a conversation. I want that conversation to occur now," he said adding, there's never been a president who hasn't negotiated on the debt limit.

The way to resolve differences over raising the nation's debt limit is "to sit down and have a conversation to resolve our differences," Boehner said.

The Republicans have sought to defund, dismantle or at least delay Obama's signature healthcare law as the price for passing the budget. They also want deficit reduction talks in exchange for raising the nation's $16.7 trillion debt limit.

Obama, on the other hand, challenged Boehner to bring a no-strings-attached "clean" spending bill for a vote on the House floor. Until Boehner does that, he said, "there's going to be a cloud over US economic credibility."

LISTEN HERE: By Mark Green Ron Christie and Gara Lamarche focus on Congress -- why it supported by 3:1 Obama's Syria-ISIS Plan (until December) and who'll make the grade in the upcoming midterm exam? And while Ron thought the GOP had a lock on the Senate two months ago, he's now no longer so sure. On Congress and ISIS. After Alibaba and NFL child abuse, the big news was on Capitol Hill, first on the bi-partisan vote for Obama's thread-the-n ...

Sep 21 2014 4:36pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

GOP strategist Ana Navarro elicited groans from fellow panelists on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday when she linked two recent negative stories about Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to a war on women. "You wanna talk about war on women? Why don't we talk about the war that Democrats waged this week against the woman who heads the DNC. You saw all sorts of innuendo against Debbie Wasserman S ...

Where are feds putting illegal-alien kids?

Sep 21 2014 3:33pm CDT | Source: WND

I find the general silence about money surrounding the opening of schools in August and September rather interesting. Instead of the usual, annual complaints that the schools just don’t have enough money to properly teach our children or that they don’t have the money to hire enough good teachers and give them the tools they need to reach the kids, there is general silence. There are a couple of subjects related to money (or the lack of it) th ...

He said he killed a teenager in New Jersey, Brendan Tevlin, as revenge for U.S. actions in the Middle East. He also murdered two gays in Seattle because they were homosexual. Obama's Lack of Leadership In War on Terror

Sep 21 2014 2:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The NY Post's Michael Goodwin calls out Barack Obama for his "half-hearted war on terror." But for now, Clapper’s sarcasm about intelligence gathering describes a nation that wants to be safe, as long as it’s not too much trouble and doesn’t require sacrifice. Something has to give. If Obama won’t do it, those who hope to succeed him must talk honestly and straight to the public. They must state a simple truth that goes like this: My fellow Americans, we ca ...

Lieberman: Obama Not Reassuring Scared Americans Who Now Need a Leader

Sep 21 2014 1:01pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation" former Democrat-turned-independent U.S. Senator from Connecticut, Joe Lieberman said President Barack Obama's poll numbers are low because he is not reassuring a frightened American public that has woken to the threat of ISIS. Lieberman said, "I think the public began to lose confidence in the president on foreign policy because they didn't feel he was leading and for a while they were happy with that because ...
