Obama to meet lawmakers to end deadlock over shutdown

Oct 9 2013, 10:44am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 9 (IANS) As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

Washington, Oct 9 — As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

House Democrats have been invited to the White House Wednesday afternoon. Senate Democrats, House Republicans and Senate Republicans will be asked to attend similar sessions in the coming days, a White House official said Wednesday.

The meetings signalling the beginning of an attempt to avert a damaging debt default came as the Republicans Tuesday rebuffed President Barack Obama's offer to negotiate if the shutdown was ended and US debt limit was raised first.

"I will not eliminate any topic of conversation, and I've shown myself willing to engage all the parties involved, any leader on the issue," Obama said Tuesday with the Oct 17 deadline when the Treasury says it would run out of money to pay US debts just over a week away.

"The only thing I will say is that we're not going to pay a ransom for America paying its bills. That's something that should be non-negotiable," he said.

"Let's lift these threats from our families and our businesses and let's get down to work," Obama said, chiding Republicans for their tactics in dealing with the twin issues.

Failing to raise the debt ceiling "would be dramatically worse" than a government shutdown and posed a "very significant risk" of a deep recession, Obama warned.

John Boehner, Speaker of the Republican controlled House, immediately rejected Obama's offer saying the president's position was "unsustainable".

"What the president said today was if there's unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us," Boehner said.

"At times like this the American people expect their leaders to sit down and have a conversation. I want that conversation to occur now," he said adding, there's never been a president who hasn't negotiated on the debt limit.

The way to resolve differences over raising the nation's debt limit is "to sit down and have a conversation to resolve our differences," Boehner said.

The Republicans have sought to defund, dismantle or at least delay Obama's signature healthcare law as the price for passing the budget. They also want deficit reduction talks in exchange for raising the nation's $16.7 trillion debt limit.

Obama, on the other hand, challenged Boehner to bring a no-strings-attached "clean" spending bill for a vote on the House floor. Until Boehner does that, he said, "there's going to be a cloud over US economic credibility."

Communists descend on Ferguson

Aug 22 2014 6:07pm CDT | Source: WND

By Paul Kengor I’ve stayed out of the Ferguson controversy. These racial conflagrations are awful, and I learned long ago that any conservative who wades in, even with the best intentions, is eviscerated by the political left. Liberals have decided that all conservatives in their ideological universe need to be racists, and they passionately resist letting anything convince them otherwise. I don’t know enough to know who, exactly, is to bl ...

Weekend Roundup: Subversive Pope Takes Aim at Global Consumer Society

Aug 22 2014 5:32pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ who overturned the money-changer's table in Biblical times, Pope Francis has regularly hurled the gospel against the "idolatrous economies" of contemporary global capitalism "that sacrifice man at the feet of the idol of money." This week in South Korea, he took aim at the temple of consumerism. Riding around town in a more-than-modest Kia Soul, he chastised his famo ...

How did racist right-wing fantasy top best-seller list?

Aug 22 2014 5:25pm CDT | Source: WND

(American Prospect) — This week Dinesh D’Souza’s America: Imagine the World Without Her is sitting at the top of the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list. Earlier this month, the movie version crossed the $14 million mark, which moved it into six place overall for earnings by a political “documentary.” But D’Souza is not just out to make money, of course. At a June screening of America, right-wing strategist Ralph Reed called D’Souza “a ...

You Know How James Foley Died. This Is How He Lived

Aug 22 2014 4:54pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When we think of James Wright Foley now, one image is seared into our collective memory: a screenshot from a video, a prisoner on the verge of death. It's a horrifying picture, the final scene in Foley's tragic journey from documenting war to becoming its victim. Heated debates are still unfolding about the ethics of looking at the image or watching the video. Does it play into propaganda? Does it deprive a man of his dignity? Or is it our responsibility to bea ...

HUFFPOLLSTER: Stop Freaking Out Over The Results Of One Poll

Aug 22 2014 4:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A new poll shows a distinctly different picture of the New Hampshire Senate race than other surveys. Reactions to the shooting and protests in Ferguson, Missouri show stark racial divisions by nearly any measure. And Americans' ice bucket challenge picks could start a different kind of cold war. This is HuffPollster for Friday, August 22, 2014. DID SCOTT BROWN REALLY CLOSE THE GAP IN NEW HAMPSHIRE? - A new UNH/WMUR survey shows Scott ...

HUFFPOST HILL - Romney. Wet. Cold.

Aug 22 2014 4:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Harry Reid made a comment that falls somewhere between, "Where are you really from?" and the list of fake names from that crash landing last year. It turns out Rand Paul does think Dreamers should be deported, so we expect him to come back to the table and finish that burger finally. And Mitt Romney said, "It is cold" after Paul Ryan dumped ice water on him. Ryan then got back in the c ...

Obama Insiders Cash in on Crony Connections

Aug 22 2014 3:08pm CDT | Source: Big Government

President Barack Obama may be unpopular, but members of his inner circle of advisers are finding themselves in high demand for big money consulting gigs with crony capitalist companies like Uber and Apple, reports The Hill. This week, top Obama campaign strategist David Plouffe took a job with the $17 billion taxi app giant Uber.  It's all part of the DC "Boomtown" cash dash to trade insider access from public service into cold hard cash.
