Obama to meet lawmakers to end deadlock over shutdown

Oct 9 2013, 10:44am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 9 (IANS) As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

Washington, Oct 9 — As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

House Democrats have been invited to the White House Wednesday afternoon. Senate Democrats, House Republicans and Senate Republicans will be asked to attend similar sessions in the coming days, a White House official said Wednesday.

The meetings signalling the beginning of an attempt to avert a damaging debt default came as the Republicans Tuesday rebuffed President Barack Obama's offer to negotiate if the shutdown was ended and US debt limit was raised first.

"I will not eliminate any topic of conversation, and I've shown myself willing to engage all the parties involved, any leader on the issue," Obama said Tuesday with the Oct 17 deadline when the Treasury says it would run out of money to pay US debts just over a week away.

"The only thing I will say is that we're not going to pay a ransom for America paying its bills. That's something that should be non-negotiable," he said.

"Let's lift these threats from our families and our businesses and let's get down to work," Obama said, chiding Republicans for their tactics in dealing with the twin issues.

Failing to raise the debt ceiling "would be dramatically worse" than a government shutdown and posed a "very significant risk" of a deep recession, Obama warned.

John Boehner, Speaker of the Republican controlled House, immediately rejected Obama's offer saying the president's position was "unsustainable".

"What the president said today was if there's unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us," Boehner said.

"At times like this the American people expect their leaders to sit down and have a conversation. I want that conversation to occur now," he said adding, there's never been a president who hasn't negotiated on the debt limit.

The way to resolve differences over raising the nation's debt limit is "to sit down and have a conversation to resolve our differences," Boehner said.

The Republicans have sought to defund, dismantle or at least delay Obama's signature healthcare law as the price for passing the budget. They also want deficit reduction talks in exchange for raising the nation's $16.7 trillion debt limit.

Obama, on the other hand, challenged Boehner to bring a no-strings-attached "clean" spending bill for a vote on the House floor. Until Boehner does that, he said, "there's going to be a cloud over US economic credibility."

President Obama’s threats to unilaterally “legalize” millions of illegal aliens is drawing strong rebukes from legal analysts, political watchdogs and some members of Congress while activists say the threats could draw more people to a new wave of protests planned to start Saturday. The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Obama is likely to grant work permits for potentially millions of illegals, allowing them to stay in the country without the threat of deportation. ...

Several hours after Speaker John Boehner announced to colleagues in the Capitol that the GOP border bill wouldn't address President Obama's threats to unilaterally grant amnesty to as many as 6 million people, Sen. Obama Won't Legalize Pot Just Because The New York Times Told Him

The White House has responded to New York Times editorials this week supporting marijuana legalization, saying ending U.S. pot prohibition isn't the "silver bullet solution." Republicans: Stop sitting on your hands

Jul 29 2014 6:57pm CDT | Source: WND

America is in crisis. Even worse, the world is on fire. Meanwhile, Barack Obama is pouring gasoline on the flames. And what are Republicans in Congress doing about it? Not much. Do they realize there is a midterm election coming up in just over three months? Do they think they are seizing on the opportunity to increase their control of the House and seize the Senate through a business-as-usual stance? Do they think they’re playing it safe? Do they not realize they have a chance ...

Jul 29 2014 6:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For the last four years, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) has championed the set of learning benchmarks known as the Common Core State Standards -- but a simmering mess of litigation in the state's court system shows that Jindal has moved as far away from his previous position as he can. Is the Obama-Netanyahu Transcript Fake?

Jul 29 2014 6:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Both President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu say that a purported transcript of their telephone call on Sunday, which was leaked to Israel's Channel 1 and reported on television, is a fake. But is it really?  Statements by both sides, quoted by Politico on Tuesday, said that the transcript does not have "any resemblance to reality." The problem, however, is that it strongly resembles the White House's readout of the call, in which he called for a ...
