Obama to meet lawmakers to end deadlock over shutdown

Oct 9 2013, 10:44am CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 9 (IANS) As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

Washington, Oct 9 — As Washington remained locked in a political impasse for the ninth day with a looming debt default deadline, President Barack Obama invited lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties for meetings to discuss the crisis.

House Democrats have been invited to the White House Wednesday afternoon. Senate Democrats, House Republicans and Senate Republicans will be asked to attend similar sessions in the coming days, a White House official said Wednesday.

The meetings signalling the beginning of an attempt to avert a damaging debt default came as the Republicans Tuesday rebuffed President Barack Obama's offer to negotiate if the shutdown was ended and US debt limit was raised first.

"I will not eliminate any topic of conversation, and I've shown myself willing to engage all the parties involved, any leader on the issue," Obama said Tuesday with the Oct 17 deadline when the Treasury says it would run out of money to pay US debts just over a week away.

"The only thing I will say is that we're not going to pay a ransom for America paying its bills. That's something that should be non-negotiable," he said.

"Let's lift these threats from our families and our businesses and let's get down to work," Obama said, chiding Republicans for their tactics in dealing with the twin issues.

Failing to raise the debt ceiling "would be dramatically worse" than a government shutdown and posed a "very significant risk" of a deep recession, Obama warned.

John Boehner, Speaker of the Republican controlled House, immediately rejected Obama's offer saying the president's position was "unsustainable".

"What the president said today was if there's unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us," Boehner said.

"At times like this the American people expect their leaders to sit down and have a conversation. I want that conversation to occur now," he said adding, there's never been a president who hasn't negotiated on the debt limit.

The way to resolve differences over raising the nation's debt limit is "to sit down and have a conversation to resolve our differences," Boehner said.

The Republicans have sought to defund, dismantle or at least delay Obama's signature healthcare law as the price for passing the budget. They also want deficit reduction talks in exchange for raising the nation's $16.7 trillion debt limit.

Obama, on the other hand, challenged Boehner to bring a no-strings-attached "clean" spending bill for a vote on the House floor. Until Boehner does that, he said, "there's going to be a cloud over US economic credibility."

2014 Midterm Elections

Sep 1 2014 7:45pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

With less than 10 weeks to go before the midterm Congressional elections Americans in general are frustrated with Washington. National polls show that about three quarters of all Americans disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job. By comparison, about half of those Americans polled disapprove of President Barack Obama's handling of his job. Sunday's New York Post reported that 163 laws have been passed and signed by the president since this two-y ...

Instead of Bombing Syria to Fight the Islamic State, Let Syria and Others Battle Islamic Radicals

Sep 1 2014 7:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Until now, President Barack Obama's foreign policy appeared to be based more on reason than emotion. In contrast to the easily excitable and often angry Sen. John McCain, for instance, the president did not suggest war was the answer to every international problem. However, the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant may have cost President Obama his equanimity. Administration officials are proclaiming this isolated experiment in 7th Century Islam to pose a d ...

A woman president? Sure, if she's best candidate

Sep 1 2014 5:58pm CDT | Source: WND

The latest Gallup poll indicates that 14 percent of the people “moderately disapprove” of Barack Obama’s performance as president and 39 percent “strongly disapprove.” Since Obama won two presidential elections, chances are that some of those who now “strongly disapprove” of what he has done voted to put him in office. We all make mistakes, but the real question is whether we learn from them. With many people now acting as if it is time for “a woman” to becom ...

Can Health Care Success Be Health Care Disaster?

Sep 1 2014 3:54pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

How can success be disaster, even in health care? As the Michael W. Smith song says, "Let me show you the way." Remember that health care one word means a system, one that currently accounts for 20 percent of U.S. national spending. Health care -- two words -- refers to a personal service relationship between a patient and a provider. ACA success The second reason (the first will be described later) that president Obama gave in 2008-1 ...

MILWAUKEE (AP) — President Barack Obama says he'll press Congress to raise the minimum wage in the same way he courted his wife — never taking no for an answer. Obama brought a buoyant Labor Day message to Wisconsin, telling union members on Monday that he sees, quote, "engines are revving a little louder" in an economy coming back from a near-depression five years ago. Now, he says, quote, ...
