Karzai-Kerry talks extended

Oct 12 2013, 6:36pm CDT | by IANS

Kabul, Oct 13 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday extended talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on a key security agreement but some contentious issues remain to be finalised, media reported citing a presidential spokesperson.

Kabul, Oct 13 — US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday extended talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on a key security agreement but some contentious issues remain to be finalised, media reported citing a presidential spokesperson.

There is still "some work" to be done related to documents, Aimal Faizi told reporters here, adding that he hoped it would be concluded soon, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

The spokesperson said the talks between President Karzai and John Kerry were rescheduled for a third round in the evening as the previous two rounds produced no satisfactory results.

Faizi said President Karzai and Kerry were to brief the media on what they discussed about the controversial agreement, but discussions were yet to end on a conclusive note.

The New York Times last week quoted some US and European officials as saying the White House was seriously considering the "zero option" that means no US troops on the ground in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

Karzai once suspended bilateral talks on the deal when the Taliban opened a political office in Qatar in a way it looked like the embassy of a government-in-exile.

The discussions, which began last year, have repeatedly been stalled over Karzai's demand for American guarantees against future foreign intervention from countries like Pakistan, and US demands for any post-2014 residual force to be able to conduct counterterrorism and counter-insurgency operations.

The situation deteriorated in the past week following a series of angry comments from Karzai that the US and NATO were repeatedly violating Afghanistan's sovereignty and inflicting suffering on its people.

Another possible reason for the outburst could have been the capture in eastern Afghanistan of senior Pakistani Taliban commander Latif Mehsud by US forces Oct 5, the same day Kerry and Karzai last spoke.

Karzai saw the move as an infringement on Afghan sovereignty.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Meshud's group had claimed responsibility for the 2010 bombing attempt in Times Square and said they would carry out future attacks.

On Election Night, Pack an Umbrella

Nov 4 2014 2:02pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I spent the last 24 hours of the last midterm elections clutching a pocket folder with two sets of index cards inside. On one set was printed a victory speech no one outside our campaign thought we were going to need. On the other was a concession speech I hadn't even shown the guy who might have to deliver it that night, like it was his own eulogy. Four years ago I was writing speeches for Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Majority Lead ...

Two States to Watch

Nov 4 2014 8:56am CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

First Read: “We’ll have a good idea early in the evening of how Election Night is going to break. The two states to watch — North Carolina (where final polling places close at 7:30 am ET) and New Hampshire (where they close at 8:00 pm ET). Every scenario of Democrats holding on to the Senate assumes they win those two states. If we’re able to put those two in the Democratic column, then we’re going to have to wait for Alaska, especially if Georgia goes to a runoff. But if Republicans wi ...

What a Republican Senate Would Mean for World Politics

Nov 4 2014 7:54am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On Tuesday, when tens of millions of US voters go to the polls, they are very likely to deliver a US Senate majority to the Republican Party. Six years into the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama and four years after the midterm elections that delivered control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans and conservative Speaker John Boehner, most polls and poll aggregate forecasts give the Republicans anywhere from a strong (70 per ...

How You Can Help Save the Senate

Nov 3 2014 1:56pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The battle for the Senate has been a cliffhanger for months. Races in at least ten states that will decide the balance of power have remained too close to call, despite corporate pundits' haste to forecast a GOP victory. Now, on the eve of Election Day, it's tempting to throw up your hands, sit back and wait for the returns to come in. That's exactly what Republicans are hoping we'll do. Give up hope ...

MPs Should Get Some Business Experience before Lecturing Us Against Exiting the EU

Nov 3 2014 9:23am CST | Source: Big Government

I'm getting quite tired of listening to politicians, and indeed some friends, who have never set up a business, or run a business, tell me about recklessness of pulling out of the European Union. Now, as of yet, I don't have kids, although I am a proud uncle. But based on the fact that I know so little about parenting, I wouldn't march blasé into broadcasting studios lecturing parent ...
