Karzai-Kerry talks extended

Oct 12 2013, 6:36pm CDT | by IANS

Kabul, Oct 13 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday extended talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on a key security agreement but some contentious issues remain to be finalised, media reported citing a presidential spokesperson.

Kabul, Oct 13 — US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday extended talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on a key security agreement but some contentious issues remain to be finalised, media reported citing a presidential spokesperson.

There is still "some work" to be done related to documents, Aimal Faizi told reporters here, adding that he hoped it would be concluded soon, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

The spokesperson said the talks between President Karzai and John Kerry were rescheduled for a third round in the evening as the previous two rounds produced no satisfactory results.

Faizi said President Karzai and Kerry were to brief the media on what they discussed about the controversial agreement, but discussions were yet to end on a conclusive note.

The New York Times last week quoted some US and European officials as saying the White House was seriously considering the "zero option" that means no US troops on the ground in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

Karzai once suspended bilateral talks on the deal when the Taliban opened a political office in Qatar in a way it looked like the embassy of a government-in-exile.

The discussions, which began last year, have repeatedly been stalled over Karzai's demand for American guarantees against future foreign intervention from countries like Pakistan, and US demands for any post-2014 residual force to be able to conduct counterterrorism and counter-insurgency operations.

The situation deteriorated in the past week following a series of angry comments from Karzai that the US and NATO were repeatedly violating Afghanistan's sovereignty and inflicting suffering on its people.

Another possible reason for the outburst could have been the capture in eastern Afghanistan of senior Pakistani Taliban commander Latif Mehsud by US forces Oct 5, the same day Kerry and Karzai last spoke.

Karzai saw the move as an infringement on Afghan sovereignty.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Meshud's group had claimed responsibility for the 2010 bombing attempt in Times Square and said they would carry out future attacks.

Cease the cease-fires!

Jul 28 2014 6:20pm CDT | Source: WND

Many years ago, on my first trip around the world, I was struck by how the children in the Middle East – Arab and Israeli alike – were among the nicest-looking little children I had seen anywhere. It was painful to think that they were going to grow up killing each other. But that is exactly what happened. It is understandable that today many people in many lands just want the fighting between the Israelis and the Palestinians to stop. Calls for a cease-fire are ringing out from the Un ...

HuffPo Should Sack Mehdi Hasan for anti-Israel Lies and Misdirection

Jul 28 2014 5:40pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Huffington Post’s extremist speech giver and ‘Political Director’ Mehdi Hasan has gone to great lengths today to try and dispel what he claims are pro-Israeli myths about the current conflict between Israel and Hamas. Of course, Hasan is hardly a neutral analyst in the conflict. He has spent much of his journalistic career targeting the Jewish State with opprobrium, and of course the fact that he is contracted Al Jazeera, whi ...

Russian BUK Missile System v. American HAWK Missile System - Is There Any Possibility of Another Similar Flight MH-17 Shoot Down Occurrence?

Jul 28 2014 3:32pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It is an understatement to say that the whole world was stunned to learn on Thursday, July 17, 2014 that a commercial/civilian aircraft had been shot out of the sky by a medium range surface-to-air missile. But it is true -- various respected media outlets have reported that a Russian-made BUK/SA-11 medium range surface-to-air missile system locked onto Malaysia Airline's Flight MH-17 flying at approximately ...

In Fight for Independence, Iraqi Kurds Look to America for Support

Jul 28 2014 2:42pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Kurdish Peshmerga forces-- a co-ed military considered the most organized military force in Iraq-- have been largely responsible for limiting the advance of the Islamic State in the nation. As the Kurds seek independence from a flimsy Iraqi government, they look toward the West, and America especially, for support. In a riveting report from Vice's Sam Koebrich, Kurds in Erbil, Iraq-- the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan and among the m ...

Israel Has Lost the War Against Hamas in Gaza. Are US Liberals Next?

Jul 28 2014 2:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Israel has lost its war against Hamas in Gaza. In truth, defeat was assured the moment the first missile or artillery shell tore through an apartment block and killed however many women, children and innocents stood between the Israeli Defense Forces and the target it had identified for destruction that day. Inflicting wholesale death and destruction on Gaza's civilian population while attempting to co ...

U.S. Fuming Over Israeli Criticism Of John Kerry

Jul 28 2014 2:25pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration pushed back strongly Monday at a torrent of Israeli criticism over Secretary of State John Kerry's latest bid to secure a cease-fire with Hamas, accusing some in Israel of launching a "misinformation campaign" against the top American diplomat. "It's simply not the way partners and allies treat each other," State Department spokeswoman ...

John Boehner Urges U.S. Solidarity With Israel

Jul 28 2014 2:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner says the United States must be a strong partner and trusted ally to Israel, not just a peace broker or observer. In a subtle jab at the Obama administration on Monday, Boehner said that means showing solidarity with Israel. Boehner's comments at the National Press Club came as Secretary of State John Kerry has tried to negotiate a humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza war between Hamas and Israel. ...

8 Times Kerry Betrayed Israel

Jul 28 2014 2:10pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Secretary of State John Kerry has long been considered an integral part of President Obama’s foreign policy team. And for just as long, he has been an anti-Israel advocate par excellence, an opponent of the Jewish State’s right to defend itself, a man dedicated to pressuring our only ally in the Middle East to concede to terror. It comes as no surprise, therefore, to see the terms of the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel proposed by Kerry in his latest round of anti-Israel maneuvering ...
