Karzai-Kerry talks extended

Oct 12 2013, 6:36pm CDT | by IANS

Kabul, Oct 13 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday extended talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on a key security agreement but some contentious issues remain to be finalised, media reported citing a presidential spokesperson.

Kabul, Oct 13 — US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday extended talks with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on a key security agreement but some contentious issues remain to be finalised, media reported citing a presidential spokesperson.

There is still "some work" to be done related to documents, Aimal Faizi told reporters here, adding that he hoped it would be concluded soon, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

The spokesperson said the talks between President Karzai and John Kerry were rescheduled for a third round in the evening as the previous two rounds produced no satisfactory results.

Faizi said President Karzai and Kerry were to brief the media on what they discussed about the controversial agreement, but discussions were yet to end on a conclusive note.

The New York Times last week quoted some US and European officials as saying the White House was seriously considering the "zero option" that means no US troops on the ground in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

Karzai once suspended bilateral talks on the deal when the Taliban opened a political office in Qatar in a way it looked like the embassy of a government-in-exile.

The discussions, which began last year, have repeatedly been stalled over Karzai's demand for American guarantees against future foreign intervention from countries like Pakistan, and US demands for any post-2014 residual force to be able to conduct counterterrorism and counter-insurgency operations.

The situation deteriorated in the past week following a series of angry comments from Karzai that the US and NATO were repeatedly violating Afghanistan's sovereignty and inflicting suffering on its people.

Another possible reason for the outburst could have been the capture in eastern Afghanistan of senior Pakistani Taliban commander Latif Mehsud by US forces Oct 5, the same day Kerry and Karzai last spoke.

Karzai saw the move as an infringement on Afghan sovereignty.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Meshud's group had claimed responsibility for the 2010 bombing attempt in Times Square and said they would carry out future attacks.

HUFFPOST HILL - Policing: A Tankless Job

Aug 21 2014 4:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Steve King pointedly noted that there’s no Congressional White Caucus, however there is an informal group known as “Congress.” The GAO thinks the Bowe Bergdahl swap was illegal so we should…send him back? And Paul Ryan told Time Magazine he doesn’t like John Boehner’s tobacco-heavy odor. Don’t be surprised if a wounded Boehner sounds off in Newsweek about his distaste for the smell of whey protein and Brylcreem. This is ...

North Korean media have graced Secretary of State John Kerry with one of its trademark insults against foreign leaders, calling him a "wolf with a hideous lantern jaw,” according to the Associated Press. The AP noted that Wednesday’s insult against Kerry only appeared in Korean-language media, meaning it was meant specifically to drum up internal support against the United States. The Kerry insult comes at a time when the Un ...

John Kerry: James Foley Beheading 'Ugly, Savage, Inexplicable, Nihilistic, Valueless'

Aug 20 2014 1:50pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement with strong words for the ISIL terrorists who were responsible for the death of American journalist James Foley. Kerry said that the action was a reminder to the world of the horrors committed by ISIL terrorists. “There is evil in this world, and we all have come face to face with it once again. Ugly, savage, inexplicable, nihilistic, and valueless evil,” he said. “ISIL is the face ...

Reid Building Firewall in MI, IA, CO, & NH

Aug 20 2014 12:22pm CDT | Source: Big Government

An old rule of politics is to ignore what campaigns say and watch, instead, what they do. Where a campaign devotes its money and resources says more about their view of the landscape than what they say in a press release. According to its recent campaign spending, Sen. Harry Reid's Senate Majority PAC is building a firewall to defend his majority in states which weren't viewed as competitive just a few months ago. It is a sign of the deteriorating climate facing Democrats n ...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) –  In its latest personal attack on a prominent official from a rival country, North Korea on Wednesday called U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry a wolf with a “hideous lantern jaw.” North Korea has unleashed a slew of crude insults against leaders in Washington and Seoul this year, calling President Barack Obama a monkey and South Korean President Park Geun-hye a prostitute. The Perils of Obama's Vacillating Strategy Toward ISIS

Aug 20 2014 9:21am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Although turmoil in the Middle East long predates President Obama, his strategy of conciliation and retrenchment has made matters considerably worse. Obama remains obtuse to the threat radical Islamists pose: that includes the Shiite theocracy in Iran bent on crossing the nuclear threshold, the virulently anti-American Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, radicals in Libya who attacked the American embassy, Boko Haram in Africa, an increasingl ...
