Obama, Pelosi discuss debt ceiling increase

Oct 13 2013, 6:26pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 14 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

Washington, Oct 14 — US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

"The president and Pelosi discussed the way forward on the pressing fiscal matters facing Congress today. They reinforced that there must be a clean debt limit increase that allows us to pay the bills we have incurred and avoid default," Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

The first US government shutdown in 17 years drags on into its 13th day. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has told Congress that the federal government will reach its debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion by Oct 17 and that failure to raise it would lead to a catastrophic default.

"The House needs to pass the clean continuing resolution to open up the government and end the shutdown that is hurting middle class families and businesses across the country," said the readout of the discussion.

US House Republicans have floated an idea of a six-week debt ceiling increase to avert a debt default crisis and urged fiscal reforms to cut government budget deficits. But Obama wants a longer-term debt limit increase without other conditions attached.

"The president also thanked Pelosi for her efforts to move forward with a clean CR and a one-year clean debt limit increase that would prevent a first-ever default of our nation's credit," noted the readout.

However, Senate Republicans Saturday blocked a similar "clean" debt ceiling increase bill proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, to extend the government's borrowing authority through the end of 2014 without other conditions attached.

Why Is the National Urban League Defending Online Discrimination?

Oct 29 2014 6:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Who did National Urban League President Marc Morial call "extreme" for supporting real Net Neutrality? Was it civil rights heroes John Lewis and John Conyers? Their congressional colleagues Keith Ellison, Raul Grijalva and Nancy Pelosi? Or did he mean Sens. Cory Booker, Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren? Maybe he meant the ACLU, the AARP or the American Library Association? Or was it the National Council of Churches, the United ...

The incumbent-protection racket

Oct 28 2014 6:19pm CDT | Source: WND

I’m told that the public is “angry” at today’s politicians. Eighty-two percent disapprove of the job Congress is doing. So will Tuesday’s election bring a big shakeup? No. Congressional re-election rates never drop below 85 percent. The last big “wave” election was 1994, when Democrats lost control of both houses. The media called it a “revolution,” and the late Peter Jennings from ABC likened Americans to 2-year-olds throwing a tantrum. Even that year the re-election rate was 9 ...

Alison Lundergan Grimes Ad Misses The Mark On Mitch McConnell

Oct 23 2014 2:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Following post first appeared on FactCheck.org. Thought you’d seen it all this political season? An ad from Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes criticizes Sen. Mitch McConnell for his vote on a bill that President Obama praised, and even thanked McConnell by name for supporting. The Grimes ad says McConnell “even voted to end the payroll tax credit” and refers in small print to McConnell’s vote in favor of the fiscal cliff deal that permanently extended the Bush tax cu ...

The Next Debbie Wasserman Schultz?

Oct 14 2014 12:29pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Wasserman Schultz is fighting for her job over at the DNC, even as some reports out there state that she will be canned after this year's elections. Most, if not all Conservatives and Republicans love to hate Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) not just because of her non-apologetic, in-your-face style of punditry, but because she is the biggest cheerleader of President Obama's dangerous political ag ...

Ebola, Gay Marriage and Global Warming

Oct 14 2014 12:15pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

No doubt Ebola is a serious global health issue, but to hear the right wing media tell it, the one current US case of Ebola, unfortunately contracted by a healthcare worker, is tantamount to the zombie apocalypse being all but a foregone conclusion. That one case is, according to the fear-mongers, proof positive that the CDC is clueless, its Director political and its motives questionable. And, justification that we can't possibly have immigration reform because people w ...

Federal liars and the lies they tell

Oct 9 2014 7:22pm CDT | Source: WND

If politicians and bureaucrats ever stopped lying for even five minutes, the ensuing silence would make the rest of us think we’d gone deaf. For instance, we’re being told repeatedly that we have nothing to fear from the now-deceased fellow down in Dallas who, instead of bringing back a souvenir T-shirt reading “I’ve Been to Liberia, Don’t Ask Me Why,” brought home a case of Ebola. We’re being told ...

This Congressman Doesn't Blend In On Capitol Hill, And That's OK

Oct 9 2014 9:12am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This story was originally published by Ozy. Rallying volunteers at his campaign headquarters in Elk Grove, California, Congressman Amerish “Ami” Bera sounds like any other So Cal bro. The lifelong Californian speaks with the laid-back lilt of a surfer, so common in his native Los Angeles County. A surfer, though, he is not. In fact, Bera is a prominent Sacramento-area doctor, the only Indian-American in Congress and, this fall, fighting to ke ...
