Obama, Pelosi discuss debt ceiling increase

Oct 13 2013, 6:26pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 14 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

Washington, Oct 14 — US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

"The president and Pelosi discussed the way forward on the pressing fiscal matters facing Congress today. They reinforced that there must be a clean debt limit increase that allows us to pay the bills we have incurred and avoid default," Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

The first US government shutdown in 17 years drags on into its 13th day. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has told Congress that the federal government will reach its debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion by Oct 17 and that failure to raise it would lead to a catastrophic default.

"The House needs to pass the clean continuing resolution to open up the government and end the shutdown that is hurting middle class families and businesses across the country," said the readout of the discussion.

US House Republicans have floated an idea of a six-week debt ceiling increase to avert a debt default crisis and urged fiscal reforms to cut government budget deficits. But Obama wants a longer-term debt limit increase without other conditions attached.

"The president also thanked Pelosi for her efforts to move forward with a clean CR and a one-year clean debt limit increase that would prevent a first-ever default of our nation's credit," noted the readout.

However, Senate Republicans Saturday blocked a similar "clean" debt ceiling increase bill proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, to extend the government's borrowing authority through the end of 2014 without other conditions attached.

Harry Reid Influences Senate Races Behind The Scenes

Sep 30 2014 8:27am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has twice won elections he was supposed to lose. If Democrats maintain control of the Senate in November, much of the credit will go to the wily Nevada Democrat. Reid is not on the ballot this year, but his position as majority leader depends on Democrats denying Republicans the net six seats they need to retake the Senate. By all accounts he is working as single-mindedly toward that go ...

GOP Continues to Blow Off Rule About Not Criticizing the President During Wartime

Sep 29 2014 5:59pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The biggest news of the past 10 days: President Obama launched the first sorties into Syria, targeting ISIS terrorists. Here's just another friendly reminder of what I thought was the rule ...

World War III: Ready to go to war for women?

Sep 21 2014 3:51pm CDT | Source: WND

Our book, “What Women Really Want,” launched this month, and we have traveled the U.S., spoken to women, to men and to people who understand that there is absolutely a war on women. That war, however, does not exist where the lame-stream media want women to believe it exists. But there is definitely a war on women. There are two. War on women I The first war is one where women are being serially gang-raped and sto ...
