Obama, Pelosi discuss debt ceiling increase

Oct 13 2013, 6:26pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 14 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

Washington, Oct 14 — US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

"The president and Pelosi discussed the way forward on the pressing fiscal matters facing Congress today. They reinforced that there must be a clean debt limit increase that allows us to pay the bills we have incurred and avoid default," Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

The first US government shutdown in 17 years drags on into its 13th day. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has told Congress that the federal government will reach its debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion by Oct 17 and that failure to raise it would lead to a catastrophic default.

"The House needs to pass the clean continuing resolution to open up the government and end the shutdown that is hurting middle class families and businesses across the country," said the readout of the discussion.

US House Republicans have floated an idea of a six-week debt ceiling increase to avert a debt default crisis and urged fiscal reforms to cut government budget deficits. But Obama wants a longer-term debt limit increase without other conditions attached.

"The president also thanked Pelosi for her efforts to move forward with a clean CR and a one-year clean debt limit increase that would prevent a first-ever default of our nation's credit," noted the readout.

However, Senate Republicans Saturday blocked a similar "clean" debt ceiling increase bill proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, to extend the government's borrowing authority through the end of 2014 without other conditions attached.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), speaking at a Congressional Progressive Caucus event, said deporting unaccompanied minors without adequate time to hear their cases to stay in the country was tantamount to "sending them back into a burning building." ...

Jul 29 2014 11:34am CDT | Source: Big Government

Obamacare has proven again to be the biggest legislative failure in history, with last week’s ruling that its subsidies are illegal. These subsidies induced some 5 million Americans to sign up for Obamacare, but are prohibited by law as held by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in Halbig v. Burwell.         This humiliation to the Obama Administration was a devastating setback to legis ...

Voyage of the Damned War on Drugs

Jul 25 2014 3:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Nancy Pelosi called for Americans to deal with Central American children seeking refuge from the violence of their countries as a humanitarian crisis, citing the Conference of Catholics Bishops' characterization of the infant Jesus's flight to Egypt during King Herod's horrific "slaughter of the innocents" (his order that all male children be killed). Of course, Jesus and his parents were only three "refugees", vs. estimates of upwards of 90,000 re ...

Obama Warns Democrats to Avoid Repeat of 2010 Midterm Elections

Jul 24 2014 6:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

At a fundraiser in California, President Obama lamented that Democrats tend to forget about the midterm elections, reminding supporters of the Republican sweep in 2010. "During midterm elections, people don’t even know there’s an election -- don’t know who their congressman is, don’t know who their senators are," he complained. "And as a consequence, the other side tends to vote at higher rates." Obama said that the Democratic electorate was "disproportionately ...
