Obama, Pelosi discuss debt ceiling increase

Oct 13 2013, 6:26pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 14 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

Washington, Oct 14 — US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

"The president and Pelosi discussed the way forward on the pressing fiscal matters facing Congress today. They reinforced that there must be a clean debt limit increase that allows us to pay the bills we have incurred and avoid default," Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

The first US government shutdown in 17 years drags on into its 13th day. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has told Congress that the federal government will reach its debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion by Oct 17 and that failure to raise it would lead to a catastrophic default.

"The House needs to pass the clean continuing resolution to open up the government and end the shutdown that is hurting middle class families and businesses across the country," said the readout of the discussion.

US House Republicans have floated an idea of a six-week debt ceiling increase to avert a debt default crisis and urged fiscal reforms to cut government budget deficits. But Obama wants a longer-term debt limit increase without other conditions attached.

"The president also thanked Pelosi for her efforts to move forward with a clean CR and a one-year clean debt limit increase that would prevent a first-ever default of our nation's credit," noted the readout.

However, Senate Republicans Saturday blocked a similar "clean" debt ceiling increase bill proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, to extend the government's borrowing authority through the end of 2014 without other conditions attached.

Republicans look to make history

Nov 4 2014 5:55pm CST | Source: WND

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has little chance of recapturing that title in 2014 WASHINGTON – The drama over whether the GOP will control both chambers of Congress for the first time since 2006 revolves around whether Republicans capture the Senate, but they are also in position to make history in the House of Representatives. If the GOP makes a net gain of nine seats, it will have it’s biggest majority since 1946. If it GOP makes a net gain of 13 s ...

Government Isn't the Problem, It's the Bully Mentality

Nov 4 2014 10:05am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Even though the U.S. economy grew by a 3.5 percent annual rate in the third quarter, boosted by a surge in exports and the biggest jump in federal spending in five years, Democrats don't seem to be taking credit for it. Why? The bullies are in control, whether they are Republican Tea Partiers that refuse to compromise on any legislation that won't downsize government programs, the Koch Brothers wh ...

In response to After Bob Dole Accepts Greg Orman's Apology For Clown-Car Comment, Orman Denies He Apologized: I guess we'll see how this all shakes out, but Orman insulting Bob Dole in Kansas, and then issuing a mealy-mouthed self-destructing non-apology in a transparent effort to manipulate both sides of the partisan divide, should be fatal for him.  Orman is a caricature of the "independent" con artist, a stealth Democrat who hires hard-core Democra ...

The 'Stop Bill Maher' UC Berkeley Petition Is How Islamists, Not Liberals, Promote Free Speech.

Nov 3 2014 7:24am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

First and foremost, there's a new UC Berkeley petition in the name of free speech aimed at keeping Bill Maher's invitation to speak on campus. This petition makes reference to Berkeley being the "home of the Free Speech Movement" and is a relevant, thought provoking rebuttal to the petition against Maher's invitation. These two opposing petitions, and this debate, can only take place in a free society. Therefore, a further analysis of the controversy ...

Pelosi, Gutierrez: Obama Should Give Temporary Amnesty to All Illegals

Oct 30 2014 7:38pm CDT | Source: Big Government

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) want President Barack Obama to give temporary amnesty to all of the country's illegal immigrants.  In a joint op-ed in Spanish-language Univision, Pelosi, Gutierrez, and Rep. Zoe Logfren (D-CA) said that "there are dozens of reforms" that Obama can enact with executive actions, and expanding deferred action and "parole" authorities would have the greatest impact.  "Pres ...

Bill Clinton Stumping in CA: 'Outside Money Meant to Diminish Voting'

Oct 30 2014 2:14pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Now that Barack Obama is persona non grata at rallies for Democratic candidates around the country, those candidates are turning to former president Bill Clinton to help them squeak out tight victories in November.  Clinton made appearances around California on Wednesday, first showing up at Oxnard College with Rep. Julia Brownley, who is running in her Ventura County district against state assemblyman Jeff Gorell. Clinton told a largely Latino crowd that Brownl ...

Why Is the National Urban League Defending Online Discrimination?

Oct 29 2014 6:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Who did National Urban League President Marc Morial call "extreme" for supporting real Net Neutrality? Was it civil rights heroes John Lewis and John Conyers? Their congressional colleagues Keith Ellison, Raul Grijalva and Nancy Pelosi? Or did he mean Sens. Cory Booker, Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren? Maybe he meant the ACLU, the AARP or the American Library Association? Or was it the National Counc ...

The incumbent-protection racket

Oct 28 2014 6:19pm CDT | Source: WND

I’m told that the public is “angry” at today’s politicians. Eighty-two percent disapprove of the job Congress is doing. So will Tuesday’s election bring a big shakeup? No. Congressional re-election rates never drop below 85 percent. The last big “wave” election was 1994, when Democrats lost control of both houses. The media called it a “revolution,” and the late Peter Jennings from ABC likened Americans ...
