Obama, Pelosi discuss debt ceiling increase

Oct 13 2013, 6:26pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, Oct 14 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

Washington, Oct 14 — US President Barack Obama Sunday spoke with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about raising the government's borrowing authority without other conditions attached, or a "clean" debt ceiling increase, the White House said Sunday.

"The president and Pelosi discussed the way forward on the pressing fiscal matters facing Congress today. They reinforced that there must be a clean debt limit increase that allows us to pay the bills we have incurred and avoid default," Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

The first US government shutdown in 17 years drags on into its 13th day. US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has told Congress that the federal government will reach its debt ceiling of $16.7 trillion by Oct 17 and that failure to raise it would lead to a catastrophic default.

"The House needs to pass the clean continuing resolution to open up the government and end the shutdown that is hurting middle class families and businesses across the country," said the readout of the discussion.

US House Republicans have floated an idea of a six-week debt ceiling increase to avert a debt default crisis and urged fiscal reforms to cut government budget deficits. But Obama wants a longer-term debt limit increase without other conditions attached.

"The president also thanked Pelosi for her efforts to move forward with a clean CR and a one-year clean debt limit increase that would prevent a first-ever default of our nation's credit," noted the readout.

However, Senate Republicans Saturday blocked a similar "clean" debt ceiling increase bill proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, to extend the government's borrowing authority through the end of 2014 without other conditions attached.

Lee At a time when President Obama has delayed taking executive action to potentially stop deportations, an analysis of federal deportation data obtained by the Associated Press found that the government is “on pace to remove the fewest number of immigrants since 2007,” with deportations on track to dip 15 percent from the previous year. Between October 2013 and July 2014, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency deported 2 ...

Progressive Democrats Push For Vote To Authorize Force Against ISIS

Sep 11 2014 6:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama maintains that he doesn't need congressional approval before engaging the nation's armed forces in Iraq. But progressives on Capitol Hill think Congress should weigh in anyway -- especially given the possibility of a risky, open-ended mission that is expected to last well beyond Obama's last day in office. Reps. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Barbara Lee (D- ...

Economic Happy Talk and the Politics of Denial

Sep 11 2014 3:49pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Democrats can't seem to get their message straight about the economy. Is it soaring because of the visionary leadership of President Obama or failing because of the intransigence of Congressional Republicans? Their answer depends on the day. Earlier this year, Obama stated: "Since I have come into office, there's almost no economic metric by which you couldn't say that the U.S. economy is better... None." Just a few days ago, President Obama sai ...

Obama's ISIS War: Liberals To The Rescue?

Sep 11 2014 1:58pm CDT | Source: Big Government

President Obama's request for congressional authorization to arm Syrian rebels to help combat the burgeoning threat of the Islamic State would be in serious trouble in the House if not for the unlikely support of liberal Democrats who savaged George W. Bush for the Iraq war. At a closed-door GOP meeting Thursday, Obama's plan to arm Syrian Free Army rebels ran into a buzzsaw of opposition from conservatives, who de ...

In his prime-time speech to the nation on the eve of the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, President Obama vowed to “degrade and destroy” the Islamic State insurgency in Iraq and Syria and announced airstrikes on those targets along with 475 U.S. boots on the ground as part of his plan – but he made a point of stating that the terrorists “are not Islamic.” “Now let’s make two things clear: ISIL is not ‘Islamic,’” Obama said, speaking ...
